Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Over the last 3 years, Frost has managed 51 games for a club that made finals once in that time and this year finished 17th.

In the same time, Tomlinson has played 73 games for a club that played finals every year and this year played in the Grand Final.

I love Frosty, but I also recognize the realities of what he has and doesn't have. This all just seems like the classic overrate your own players syndrome.

For his size he doesn't have the pace or any x factor that will set him apart.

It's unfair and he is a good footballer but at AFL level if you are 174cm then you have to be exceptional and or have some exceptional attributes.

I know he got a senior debut this season and good luck to him.

He's already done more than most but I don't see him being the answer to our small forward problems, same with Bedford.

You tried to compare their stats. That was my issue. Not their asking price.

No others were comparing them qualitatively AF so it was open slather from there and i was merely stating that seeing as you are going to, here are a few stats.  Very few players can be compared like for like regardless and we all know they are playing diff roles on game day etc.  We all get that.  It's a very inexact science when comparing anyone nowadays

I think Bedford is a worry purely based on the fact he wasn't able to break into the team in a year where we were crying out for small forwards.

Not sure it's valid to assess a 19 yo first year player in a team that is notorious for slow development of players. You may be right, but a 69kg late pick in the draft will generally struggle during year one.

I haven't kept track of his Casey year. Has he had any games there that showed signs (as opposed to dominating every game with 30+ disp)?

As he's our first academy pick, I hope he can break into the seniors in 2020. A small goal sneak is what we are crying out for in the forward line

I'll admit here that I haven't watched Casey enough this year, so should reserve judgement, but it is a worry he wasn't able to at least get one game. You can hide a small forward a bit. As long as they tackle.

To a point but he isn't always limited....two critical involvements in the last 2 minutes helped in what was, for mine, our best win for the season...

He played well that day and it was a great win, but... his last touch was a clear throw that he was very lucky to get away with.

If the umpire was even slightly tuned-in, it would have been a Hawthorn shot on goal at the siren.

On SEN earlier today (4ish?) they said that this deal is all but done.  I don't know how highly you rate that information, but it was in response to a text asking if Melbourne were doing anything.  They said Tomlinson is done bar signing the paperwork, Langdon will get done and we're ahead in the race for Elliott.

So it seems like it will be Frost out and Tomlinson in. Immediate downgrade. Great start to the trade period. ?

Tomlinson completely underwhelming in finals in my view

Appears to be  slow and with poor decision making

Perfect fit for Goodwin style  Pass for me

For any DL posters who started reading DL after we traded in Melk and Hibberd the threads about them prior to being traded in are well worth a read in the context of getting in Tomlinson, who don't have to give up any draft picks for.

Spoiler alert: some were dead against getting them and many people thought we gave up too high draft picks for them

Both in my view were worth picks 28 at the time have proven to be valuable players over the journey

Without knowing what the rationale for recruiting Tomlinson is I suspect that he is a solid citizen who can release other players to play in other positions.

May playing marking Wing/forward.

I suspect that we will be developing a number of forwards from within which should include OMac and Petty

Like to know which players will be released to where? Please dont mention Oscar.

If Joel Smith is fully fit and gets a good run at it, how would his game compare to Tomlinson?

They really are different players... I see smith playing as that X factor forward, really good in the air and quick when the ball hits the ground really hard to match up on.

Tomlinson is an aerobic beast, his best position IMO is a link up player on the wing who has the added bonus of being able to compete in the air.

The one thing Tomlinson does is take a contested mark on the outlet from the d50.  We were so predictable with Max the only target in 19.  As a guy who can take that mark and hit up a player (hopefully changing lanes), able to pinch hit in the ruck and block their outlets from our D50, he will be very valuable for us.  It is really a role that we don’t have at the moment, and he may even act as a high HF at times able to mark and deliver into 50.  Our marking through this part of the ground has been a real deficit, so it make huge sense we should go after this type of player, and better that he is a good clubman, and has a solid tank.

Perhaps rather than look at what he didn’t bring to GWS, have a look at what he can specifically add to MFC?

Agree. I think Smith was a big loss this year. I really rate him and have tge feeking tbat wirh some luck with injury he could become something special.

Smith's unavailability  exacerbated the issues created by weeds and Mac's struggles and the absence of hannan and avb. We just could not bring the ball to ground often enough. Not that had anyone who could rove the spill.

I read an article in the age (I think- I forget by whom - gleeson maybe?) that talked about the importance of lynch and  reiwoldt bringing the ball to ground when they were unable to mark (which is increasingly hard to do with zines and floods).

I'm sure the plan was for Smith to play that role for the dees. Hit the pack and use his  athletism and leap to create araerial contests. I am really pleased he has re signed and really hope he stays fit. If he does  he will be like a new recruit for us.

The first involvement was dumb luck, the second had me holding my head in despair as it was a blatant free kick against Frost that miraculously wasn't paid. He is a deadset liability.

You are a harsh critic Mach.

As Garry said in the commentary, "courage" to put himself in a position to intercept.  Took possession, baulked two or three Hawks, used pace to run into space and lowered vision to hit up Lockhart.  Not too shabby for a tall gangly giraffe i reckon.

2nd bit of desperation play did involve an amount of luck with a loose ball but that's often the case with the random oval.  Can go in any direction.  He dived to trap it and yes threw the ball but tried to make it look a tad legit (poorly i guess but who cares...umpire blind sided as often they are and got away with it).  The Hawks, Eagles and others (eg., Doggies especially in their 2016 premiership year) have been tossing / throwing / chucking the ball out of congestion for decades (Hawks / Essendrug and Eagles the original experts imv) and escaping congestion quicker than many other teams (prior to those teams catching on) giving them a huge advantage vs others that mostly tended not to and tried to use traditional more correct methods most of the time (ie., we were one!).  We finally start to catch on and utilise the same tactics and you want to kill it off / criticise it?  Lordy lordy.

Each to their own i guess.

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
