Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I have no view on him as have never seen him play.

I noticed that the discussion here is that he rucked last night.  AFL website doesn't credit Tomlinson with Hit Outs or Clearances.  So wondering how people rated his rucking last night.  Thanks.

He was not good as a ruckman, lost the hitouts then made no impact around the ground. He grabbed it out one occasion and then rushed the kick down the line striaght to the gws wall.

While he might have played in the ruck, you wouldn't want him in the team as a second ruckman.

An article a few days ago reported Tomlinson was looking at 500k a season with us, struggling to locate that article though. Does 500k sound close to the mark if accurate?

Even at 500k that outs him in the top third percentile wise.

I just don't see value for a player that is merely useful in a well performing club.

Trust it's not a four year deal.

I look at it like this:

If the top players, and more of them, are pushing into that million a year range, then paying Tomlinson half that indicates that he is half the player they are.  I think that's pretty much spot on to me.

Also, it's ridiculous having a whinge about contracts, because unless you've seen the contract and are across multiple player contracts competition-wide, you wouldn't have a clue what you're talking about.

Don’t forget spirit that he has made up his mind to move already and was dump last week so his body may be on field but his head is not there.

I know when I am leaving one job for another I check out basically straight away.

The fresh start will probably do him the world of good even if it is at our club.

So he possibly lacked motivation because he knows he's leaving?

It was a final!!!!  Isn't thst the ultimate motivation??

How did Dangerfield play knowing he was leaving Adelaide?

My lack of enthusiasm is based on watching him for a couple of seasons because his name has been raised before. Why replace our existing  plodders with another at twice the salary?

It's not too hard to look at player salaries on a metadata basis. Plenty of published information these days.

https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2019-footys-six-million-dollar-men-for-2018-season-revealed-with-more-to-join-top-pay-bracket-this-year/news-story/1340f19b6f30485d9d3f3025463469f4

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-02-22/player-payments-revealed-millionaires-on-the-up

what is more difficult is getting a handle on the front and back loading aspects of contracts as they differ dramatically by reference to yearly demands on the salary cap.

You'd need to be a brave club for example to back load a four year contract on the basis that the new TV rights (due at the end of 2022) will deliver say a 20% increase in the salary cap but I am sure some will be doing it.

Without knowing the strategy behind all the decision making though, it's near pointless speculating.

I know it's a forum and that's 99% of what a forum is about, but there are greater things to worry about than contracts that we have no real inside information on.

Stays on the park (80 out of the last 82). Ended up playing wing at the Giants after having a go at cementing 4 or 5 other spots. Probably a 15-22 player there and maybe the same with us. I'm cooling on him from a cap perspective (unless he is cheap or free - pay wise).

Especially when we've been very good at how we manage the cap over the last 4-5 years.

Tomlinson on 500k is about right to me.

I guess so. I wouldn't know. All I know is that we've allegedly had money in the cap to chase a 'big fish' the last two or so years, so that would make me agree with you on "we've been very good at how we manage the cap".

Do you understand the math... the highest paid players are in the 26 to 28 year old bracket.

We don't have any high performers in that bracket other than Gawn so of course we are managing our cap well.

If Oliver, Brayshaw and Petracca go A grade and hit 25 plus say Salem at A-  tell me how good we are then.

Anyway the fact remains that at 500k and above he is in the top one third salary wise of the league. Does he deserve that.

If you just want to say the "club know best" all the time why do you bother commenting.

I haven't said anywhere that the club knows best. But I have said that sometimes you have to overpay to get what you want. We need wingers. Tomlinson will be better than any current wingers we have and more durable. It's a no brainer.

Affects different players/people differently crystal. We will never really know. He will be in our best 22 imo which is a good thing.

If that was an audition to be signed by the MFC, he failed dismally.

1) Just 7 possessions and 2 marks

2) Had a direct goal involvement.... for the opposition.

3) played aimlessly as a 5th forward, then wing, then slaughtered in the ruck to relieve a cooked Mumford.

Don’t worry goody won’t review the game ?

Great post Jim.  We are one of the worst 2/3 performing Clubs over the last 5 years.  We’ve also traded one of our very best players recently. I can’t believe we haven’t been right up to our necks in bids for Kelly, Martin, De Goey, Coniglio etc as have the Kangas.  Kangas have outperformed us for 9 out of last 10 years but they have had a war chest which we clearly haven’t because we must grossly overpay our players.

North also haven't landed anyone. We've landed Lever and then May in successive off seasons. The very best players on the market both off seasons.

By all means have a whinge, but your post above is a strawman argument.

Rubbish. Kangas shot for the stars and they missed going for the absolute best in the industry. My point was, despite massively outperforming MFC for the last 10 years, they had the Salary Cap to have a real crack at Kelly, De Goey & Martin.  MFC couldn’t.

FCS, don’t crow about recruiting a 3rd tall defender that had knee reconstruction history on enormous money and over paid with draft picks. Plus a fat, unfit May who we once again were the ONLY club in the picture because we had the very low Pick 6 and we were willing to pay him Hogan’s money which was far more than anyone else was willing to do.

Bottom line Kangas have recruited Higgins, Polec, Pittard over recent years, all players with pace and dash that walk into the Dees.

They might, however, on balance they have already a better one in Tarrant. Great player, great bloke, great clubman.  Plays every week, no fuss.

My point is that I used the Kangas to demonstrate a club that has really managed their TPP far better than what I believe the Dees have.

They’ve owned us for 10 years but have had a real crack at the superstars of our game and came within a bees [censored] of landing Dustin Martin.

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
