CHANGES: Rd 21 v Collingwood

Recommended Posts

Last week I predicted a 30 point loss. This week I say with a good coaching performance and a confident bunch of players we can have a win.

In the world of what ifs..... imagine if the Weed had been having a reasonable season and he hadn't signed an extension.

His manager may have been proved right

Only two players in contention for inclusion this week and both must play if fit.

1 ) Marty Hore - what a disgrace that he was left to play VFL last week.

2) May - Obviously depends on him passing his fitness test.

Out: Lever (if injured, but I suspect that he will just be heavily strapped and will be good to go)

O.Mac - if the coach wants to omit Preuss instead, then O.Mac has to play forward and back-up ruck if that is the case.

C.Wagner - only left out if Lever is fit.

Shock move: I liked how Goody sent Hunt back last week to combat the pacey Tiger smalls and I think this week it's time we tried to get Salem more involved with offense and play him in the mids with job of tagging Sidebottom.

B: Hunt May Hore

HF: Jones Lever Hibberd

C Baker Brayshaw Salem

HF: Melky Petty Fritsch

F: Petracca Lewis Harmes

Ru: Gawn Oliver Viney

Int: Frost (def), JKH (mid), Dunkley (fwd),  Preuss or O.Mac (ruck/fwd)

d+ If you close your eyes and imagine he is playing he will have the same impact. I would rather we went experimental, May and OMac forward with Viney as small forward, Preuss to the backline with Oliver , Gus and Salem on the ball. No tanking here just an in season experiment.

We have to play Hore, Petty, Baker, Dunkley and Preuss. They will definitely be at the club next year and need a run of games.

If Lever plays, May stays down back. These two plus Jetta and Hibberd need to play alongside each other to develop the connection that has been missing so much.

Omac. I passionately defended him about 2 years ago here on DL, saying wait until he has developed to 70 games. I waited. His development has taken a massive step back this year. No more games but keep unless another tall back develops.

Long term, I am not hugely impressed by the Wagner boys, so don't mind if they are dropped.

And I actually think we a real good chance against the June premiers Collingwood.

Good rationale. ..re players.

I fear it's  another Melbourne  2/3 - 3/4 worth of game coming  up.  Unlike us.. they'll  come  to play and refine ahead of finals.

OMac must be dropped for this game - too unable to contest the ball against an opponent, shirks the issues, reliant of chasing whilst getting further and further behind the spoiling zone, creates significant gaps in the backline arriving to the contest after the ball has been marked or delivered by hand and/or foot.

Yeh, the gate to the members lounge did not work ....is that Omac's fault too !!

Sounds like May will be back, not convinced by the Lever info though going on previous fitness tests.

Injury update: May set to return

I notice they also slipped in a line about Weideman having hip surgery, and not just one operation by the sound of it. Did I miss that previously or is that news to others as well?

Mmmm .. maybe Preuss to follow Cox wherever he goes (assuming he plays - isn't he under some sort of injury cloud?) ..... meaningless game so experiment time.

Too true.  Petty is just starting to show he is learning as a forward: why not leave him there?

I guess that could mean - Cox out, Preuss out.

Who would be Colonwood's back up ruckman?

Mid year he missed a couple of weeks and their were rumours he needed hip ops. First I've heard of it since though. Broken jaw may be a blessing in disguise if they were waiting to do them.

Yeah, he had the injury then but I think avoided surgery at the time, but I seem to recall him having hip surgery in his first or second offseason?

Interesting, I remember seeing somewhere they said he shouldn't miss too much preseason.

Thought that strange if it was only a broken jaw...

I had been promoting the idea of retaining Preuss purely for the extra support he gives Max in the ruck. However, the weather forecast for Saturday which inlcudes a 95% chance of showers, between 8-15 mm of rain, a chance of thunderstorms, possible hail and snow down to Preuss's eyebrows suggests it might not be the conditions in which to play him. Cox being out also reduces the need for a giant second ruckman. But, if T Smith isn't available and with our other nominal KPFs already out injured, who could give Max the 5 minute break he needs each quarter if Preuss doesn't play? It hasn't worked before, but do we turn to Frost (which coincidentally seems a weather appropriate name)?

Can't use injuries as an excuse this week:

Collingwood missing 9 of their best 22:

De Goey, Stevenson, Beams, Langdon, Sier, Cox, Moore, Aish and Wells (who will return for finals).

Or will the apologists still blame the interrupted pre season, 21 weeks later?

As a whole I agree, but you're including Sier as a best 22 player? He couldn't get a game until they had an injury 'crisis'.

Agree in that he didn't get a game in the early rounds when they were up and about. Beams probably took his place.

However, he had an interrupted pre season and was a part of their grand final side last year, so he's certainly in the best 22-26 mix for Collingwood.

I'll spew if OMac and Preuss play. Hore and May are certainties if fit. unbelievable decision not to play Hore last week - i have little faith in the selection process.

BACK IN STYLE by Whispering Jack

From the moment when the Elton John character in the movie “Rocketman” burst into its opening scene dressed as a flamboyant demon on his way to an addiction rehabilitation session, the game was on. Here was yet another film about a person gifted with a meteoric rise to stardom finding coke, booze and a hedonistic lifestyle that led directly to a destructive crash into the abyss. Ultimately, these stories end in total disaster (“A Star is Born”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Judy”) but this one resulted

    THE TRADING CHRONICLES 2019

PART ONE - OVERTURE  I have a disclaimer at the outset. I’m not a fan of the races - be they horses or motors of any kind. Once the final siren sounds on the football season, I find the month or so that follows and corresponds roughly with the Spring Racing Carnival to be the most boring time of the year for sports fans. You turn on the radio and you’re confronted by the monotonous drone of a self-proclaimed racing expert or by the nasally twang of an ex-jockey banging on about the equine p

    CHANGES 2019 by The Oracle

PART 1 - IT’S A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED THIS TIME This year’s free agency, trade and draft period will see the usual drama and upheaval as the AFL’s 18 clubs seek to better their lists in order to challenge for finals and possibly premiership honours. Long before the final siren sounded on the season just over a week ago, the maneuvering was under way with player agents and clubs discussing possible player movements and in some cases, deals had already been done.  Yesterday, the r

HOW FAR SOUTH? by George on the Outer

It was appropriate that Melbourne was playing its last game of season 2019 in Hobart.  After all, how much further south could the team go? And much as it has done in many of the previous 22 games, the side managed to extract a loss from a winning position by simply giving the ball back to the opposition time and time again. In fact, they gave it back to the opposition to the tune of 53 points from turnovers while, by way of contrast North Melbourne contributed  only 17 points to their oppo

    COOKED by The Oracle

I can vividly remember when the Demons ventured onto Blundstone Arena for the first time in early 2016 only to lose to the Kangaroos by 20.11.131 to 21.10.136.    Melbourne was then a team on the up and up: young, enthusiastic and bold. It gave up a huge quarter time deficit after kicking against a strong wind but made that up by half time and fell dramatically short after an exciting high scoring affair.  The team lost no fans that day - they were willing to take the game on and attac

    HELP by KC rom Casey

The Casey Demons finished off their home and away season against Frankston at Skybus Stadium on Sunday with a narrow, unconvincing 6-point victory that left the door slightly open for a top eight berth when the VFL finals begin in a fortnight’s time. While sunny skies prevailed over Frankston in the morning, the skies became overcast by noon and heavy waves pounded the bay nearby as the rains came in to greet the players as the game started. And conditions stayed dark and dreary for the rem

THANKS BUT NO THANKS by George on the Outer

Thanks, but no thanks! In a round where the club was supposed to thank their fans for the support during the year, the Melbourne Football Club chose to do otherwise with a 53 point loss to a team that sat 15th on the ladder.  Don’t give us cheap jumpers that can’t be sold in the Demon shop.  Don’t give us vouchers to shop there, give us something on the field, which is why we come to the football in the first place. It was a disgraceful performance, which started with a disgracefu

SLEEP OUT AT THE MCG by The Oracle

Around about 12 months ago Melbourne and Sydney fought out an epic battle between two top eight teams fighting for the best possible ladder position in the lead up to the finals. The Swans triumphed by 9 points at the MCG after the Demons came back from five goals down at three quarter time. But for its poor kicking for goal, Melbourne might well have won the game and finished in the top four. Who knows what might then have happened for the club in September? A LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE by KC from Casey

Two clubs that have been hard hit by injury recently took part in a dour battle under dark clouds and, with intermittent showers falling, it wasn’t a pretty game at Victoria Park on Sunday. Despite all that, the Casey Demons added a little ray of sunshine to their day to get the job done over a "traditional" rival with a 15 point victory over Collingwood VFL that breathed life back into their season. THE RETRO ROUND by George on the Outer

We have seen it all before… Yes, a wonderful idea to showcase what used to be in football.  Big crowds, umpires who knew how to apply the rules and not opinions, high marks, skilful players. But for the Melbourne supporters their retro is what it has been like for the past 10 years. Losing games, end on end, year after year.  Opportunities squandered in front of goal. VFL standard players running around at the MCG. Just more of the same, and the game against Collingwood was no ex

Not that hard to predict. Big Demon says: Unfortunately Collingwood will win because they have a lot more to play for. WHAT, NO BLOOD? by George on the Outer

The feeling when turning up to the MCG on a Saturday night to play a top four side in Richmond, while the Melbourne sits cemented in close proximity to the bottom of the table is like attending the Colosseum in Ancient Roman times. The expectation is that a bloodbath is about to occur. There are 100,000 Richmond members and 50,000 Melbourne members, and despite the fact that it turned out to be a wet night after half-time, a crowd of only 37K bothered to turn up. That should never have happ
