Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Really?

We now have a backline 'general' in May for the first time since ...... I can't remember.

Jamie Duursma perhaps, Earl Spalding, Neita when he played there as a 19 year old,...

Get the drift.

It's funny how in the history of the game that in many cases the best captain is the best leader with the coolest head, not the gun player.

Think Harley and Ling at cats, Davis at GWS, Easton at dogs, Hurn at toasters and many others.

Who is our born leader with a cool head who can lift the side? Not Max because he is too busy being the best ruckman in the game and definitely not Viney who seems to believe that there is never too much stupid effort.

My preferred options include TMac (who is always seen directing the team in close games), a versatile Tracca who has become the papa bear in the forward line (he is the one patting heads when team mates come to him after doing well) and has a football brain.

Any other choices that fit the bill?

All I can see is that you have nothing to back up what you say and have to reply in memes. I will bet May will not be our VC.

On that we agree.

The rest was garbage.

And it was a gif, not a meme.

I honestly think if Jack Viney wasn't who he is, he'd be on the trade table, he's one dimensional, injury prone and probably still has decent trade currency.

this may be unpopular, but i loved seeing May going off at frost a few weeks back, he's passionate, drives high standards, he's clearly already a leader of the club.

i think on field leadership is super important these days, i think we're fine down back with May, Lever, Jetta

we lack it desperately everywhere else though.

I am not a troll. I am looking at statistics. He was too old for the price we paid. He might make it to 30 games but I would be surprised if we were successful with him in the best 22. May bullying Frost does not make him a leader. Frost, Hore and Salem have been our best defenders this year. People here bang on about him being a VC at an unsuccessful club as some sort of qualification. This is nonsense, he may have been made VC at the Suns to increase his trade value. The Demons were suckers to go for it. Two ex-Suns players - less than a dozen games out of them in a losing season? Neither have proved their value. May has to get out there and earn some respect if he wants to be successful at the Demons. Making him VC before he does anything here will not help him get there.

Pretty sure May was co captain at the suns, that's how much you know about him !

On SEN afternoon show Maher was saying that of all the clubs, Melbourne supporters never ring into complain, so he called for supporters to ring and a few did. Most were saying similar things about a soft underbelly and that gentleman type players only get recruited to the Demons.

Another guy rang in and said Pert had said nothing since he came to the club, except to find a better home base. Someone else said 666 had hurt us a lot, because we spent the last 2 years with 2 defenders charging in off the back of the square.

And didn't that work well for him and the team. So what is your point? I know May was professional enough to turn up unfit. He has not done anything here yet, looking better in a crap team is not a yardstick if he was captain or not. He will not be either here and will have to prove himself to get in the leadership group.

TMac? He shouldn’t take on such a task when his own skills and form are in constant need of attention. Also there’s the whole Jordan Peterson/IPA thing. Shudder.

Trac? I really like him, but he’s too goofy to be skip.

It’s a real drag that Angus didn’t capitalise on a great ‘18. Had he taken things up a notch he would have been a fine suggestion.

Max for captain. On top of all the other obvious reasons why, it’ll also make it harder for him to go to another club.

With that in mind, make Clayton Oliver president or something.

It's funny that most fans on this board will see we have too many of the same kind of players in the middle of the park, but the club will probably draft in 2-3 more inside mids this season.

Seriously, make a bold call. Show some balls and stop talking. If it's saying goodbye to Jones/Garlett/Lewis this year then so be it. If it's trading one of Brayshaw/Harmes/Viney and going in for an outside player or a key forward then so be it. Sitting still is going to cost us, we don't even win around the contest as much as we used to so whats the point of hoarding inside players.

Edit: Also my shout for captain is Lever. Gawn, Oliver, Trac and Brayshaw don't scream captain or have the personality of a captain in my eyes. Viney and Jones both have similar attitudes which made them at the time stand out for the role. I think Jake has the combination of a mature head and talent to back it up.

Yup. And sit Viney away from the midfield and put him in the forward pocket as a ferociously defensive minded goal sneak that can help us retain the ball, pinch hit in the middle at times, but all year, hone his kicking and kick 30 for us.

Not bad ??

Viney and Jones have been immense disappointments this year. Jones has had one "leader's" game and that was against Sydney. I am not expecting him to set the world on fire but his drop into mediocrity has peaked this season and it would be difficult to justify a spot for him in the top 22 next year.

Viney has had obvious physical battles but it's more clear every week that we can't have Oliver, Brayshaw and Viney competing for the same ball.

Goodwin needs to grow a pair and start making changes because it's not working.

Gawn is far and away our only on-field leader.

Agreed - I chanced to speak to somebody on the weekend, who claimed to have a bit of contact within the club (not players). He hears that Viney and Jones don’t particularly get on and there are two camps within the squad. This is all hearsay, of course, but might go some way into explaining part of the dysfunction.

It will be a brave decision to get rid of Viney as captain, but probably the correct one. He certainly flies the flag for our club, but that doesn’t automatically make captain material. Funnily enough, Jones is probably similar in that he was the only one willing to fly the flag during the Neeld times, so was the automatic choice.

When you look at the likes of Cotchin, Pendles and Selwood, you see the attributes required. Other than Maxy, May and Lever, I don’t see anyone else banging down the door.

Well, in terms of running through brick walls for the MFC, I would say he does. In terms of representing our club à la Cotchin, Pendles etc, I would say not.

Mate, you've said nothing factual to back up your hate for May, only ranting, sweeping statements and opinions. It's clear you dislike him, we get it, you don't need to continue on and on and on.

The gif I posted sums up your position perfectly.

I think Melbourne supporters don’t ring talk back radio because they are busy working and having a life, not collecting dole or scamming cigarettes at train stations. They don’t feel the need to waste their time talking to other idiots on the radio, as if they will miraculously fix our problems.

Our supporters are the most resilient and loyal there are. We have the highest supporter to member conversation rate. We aren’t the problem.

Pretty sure playing in the backline of a crap team and looking good especially Gold Coast is a pretty good effort

May's stats speak for themselves. I am not going to parrot them to you, look them up yourself if you know how. You have not even made an opinion apart form it is your opinion I am wrong. You have nothing to say.  I do not hate May. I just don't think he is very good, too old and we paid too much for him.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
