Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

CHANGES: Rd 19 vs St. Kilda

I couldn't find a thread, but if I'm mistaken please merge or delete.

If Tim Smith or Weideman are available, one of them should come in for Preuss. He's been tried and he's not ready. Lockhart had no impact. Presumably Viney is the only player at risk of missing due to injury. That's two outs, or three if Viney's unavailable.

Players to bring in are hard to find (other than Smith or Weideman). I'd like to see JKH, but it seems the club doesn't. Who else?

Not many leap out as required changes. Questions on Smith and on Weids fitness but I don't think Preuss can continue to play. I'm a big fan of Baker so I'd be happy if he played.

Lockhart is a challenging one, but he's struggled to have an influence with footy in hand last couple of weeks. Did he have a defencive role again? Jetta (WC) didn't do much so maybe that was lockhart again? But I didn't really see that.

Viney, May and Petty injurys also unlikely to be risked, but I expect them all to play

But keeping it simple early in the week I'd go:

Out: Preuss

In: Weid

Baker and Smith both sitting ready for any other outs

  • Demonland changed the title to CHANGES: Rd 19 vs St. Kilda

Pending Viney being cleared, not many changes.

I hope those calling for Pruess's inclusion have realised the obvious issues with his mobility. He's a back up for Max and needs to learn his craft and develop a tank in the VFL

Out:Pruess, Lockhart although he did a defensive job I think he needs a freshen up

In. Smith/Weid, Baker

B.     Jetta  May  Hibberd

HB.  Lever Frost Salem

C. Baker   Oliver Wagner

HF. Hunt    Petty  Fritsch

F.  Trac   Smith/Weid  Lewis

R. Gawn  Viney Brayshaw

I/C. Harmes ANB, Wagner, Jones

Smith is not the future ... we know exactly what he can deliver.

Preuss to play 60-70% time as ruck with Gawn playing forward of the wing.

He might not be the future, but right now, he brings more to the table than Preuss does.  Smith or Weid in for Preuss is a must.

Lockhart probably needs a spell as well and I'd like to see them give Baker another run.  So:

In:  Baker, Weid/Smith

Out:  Lockhart, Preuss

Gawn is a better forward than Smith and Preuss.

Preuss will dominate the ruck easily. You don't need a mobile ruckman every week. Just ask Richmond and Essendon who are doing fine with a lesser ruckman.

Weideman perhaps but he hasn't shown anything much

So you're advocating putting arguably the best ruckman in the game as almost a permanent forward and letting Preuss do the ruckwork?

Madness.  I get what you're saying re: Smith not really being the future at 28, but gee, I'd much rather have his effort and output down there than leaving Gawn there for large chunks of the game.  We need him in the guts.

I think we will this week. Rowan Marshall is probably leading St Kilda's B&F and is very much doing well because of his mobility.

Have a look at our clearance rate... Gawn is underutilized as a permanent ruck.

Preuss won the hitouts as well on Sunday.

The role of the ruckman has been in steady decline for years due to better play by opposing midfields.

There's very little evidence for Gawn as a good forward. He can't offer defensive pressure, he shanks his kicks and he finds it harder to mark against a good key defender than when behind the ball against a ruck.

Marshall is in excellent form. He does enough in the taps and is very good at following up and excellent at ground level. He'll lose the taps but win the battle against Preuss decisively.

The Tigers are doing ok with Soldo and well with Chol as the extra midfielder type mobile ruck, same for McKernan as a ruck at Essendon. Preuss isn't like that, he's the opposite. He's competent in the ruck but offers little as an around the ground follower, he's more like Zac Clarke who the bombers struggled with.

If Gawn's in the ruck he's odds on (but not entirely a guarantee) to win the ruck duel for the 80% of game time he and Marshall go head to head. The Saints aren't playing a second ruck so Tim Smith is actually perfect as a back up ruck against Acres or maybe Bruce.

Especially on the quick track at Marvel it makes sense to get a forward in for the forward line and leave the best ruck in the ruck!

Lockhart played a stopping role again, more a defensive role, hence little influence.. may have been on Ryan or Rioli?

He was so ineffective you could not tell who he was on or notice how he shut them down. I can not remember him winning a contest and he was only noticed chasing a ball a couple of times. He needs to be dropped to learn how to get more consistency into his game. I suspect his best position is as a forward. Whatever he was meant to do V Eagles was a failure - try someone else.

Hard to see Lockhart or Preuss holding their places.

JKH for the former, Weideman/Smith for the latter, both of those if Petty is injured.

Wonder also if Hore wouldn't be ready to come back in, 3 weeks is generally enough for a shoulder. Jetta is still underdone (match-wise), but hard to see him being dropped for the moment. Frost does some fancy things with his speed, but is a poor one-on-one defender. Perhaps depends on matchups, not to mention, whether or not May is injured (Hamstring).

OUT: Viney (concussion), Preuss, Lockhart

IN: JKH, T.Smith, Baker or Dunkley

Would be keen to see how we go for a full game without Viney in the middle tbh. Played some of our best footy without him last year and we got a roll on against West Coast when he came off. Could all be coincidence of course, and he was great in the finals last year, but now is the time to try these kind of things.

I know he probably won't get picked, but I'm still putting JKH in my ins as that's what I would do. Has earned a game, and if we're not being legit about competition for selection then why even bother having a selection committee? Just let Goody to tell his favourites every week in their WhatsApp group.

Nothing much to stand out from Casey.  Baker perhaps. I’d almost go with Anb out and Baker in.

Tom Freeman is a young Casey player who is a rookie chance.

ANB out? Make that decision before even seeing the Eagles game? No way he gets dropped after that game, he's delivery into the forward 50 was great, and what we've been missing. Not opposed to bringing Baker back though, maybe for Lockhart who's done a good job lately but looked tired Sunday. Preuss needs to come out if weid or tsmith are ready.

lockhart was playing a defensive role, i think? he seemed to 'do his job' so hard to see him getting dropped as he's one of our very few players with a bit of toe, particularly on a quick deck against a speedy side

like everyone else, i think it's probably preuss out for one of weideman or tim smith - would prefer the former as he's the future whereas smith is a stop-gap measure

weideman and petty would be interesting to watch as a key forward combination

The only change I want to see is Preuss out.

Gawn has won 2 All Australians as the sole ruckman so just stick with that formula. Preuss is useless as a forward-ruck and is actually a liability up forward.

In - Weed or T Smith

Out - Preuss

Also, St Kilda only plays one ruckman, so we don't lose by using stop-gap as our second ruck.

OUT: Viney (No need to risk him) Lewis (Thanks for your service) Petty (Injury)

IN: Weid, Baker (Much needed run) , JKH (Although not part of our future, VFL Form warrants selection.)

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
