Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I hope so, he's an unbelievable talent. If Spargo was worth pick 20 something I'd have Pickett top 5 easily

Don't think I was serious, but I think many are going to eat their words about Spargo, many are writing him off just because of his height, and having the second year blues, which many many other good footballers have had, he had a very good first season

I hope so. He's a very smart player

I didn't mean to bag Spargo. Just they're both midgets but Pickett's tools are unbelievable in comparison with his pace, leap and tackling. Potentially Cyril Rioli-esqe

wasnt worth 29 either

I think we overrate second round draft picks. Spargo stands up easily at pick 29. looking at the last few years with a sample around that pick, who is better around pick 29 ? If he is better than half this lot, i'd suggest he was definitely worth it.

2015

Pick 28 Luke Partington West Coast
Pick 29 Alex Morgan Essendon
Pick 30 Mason Redman Essendon

2016

Pick 28 Patrick Lipinski Western Bulldogs
Pick 29 Shai Bolton Richmond
Pick 30 Sam McLarty Collingwood

2017

Pick 28 Sam Taylor Greater Western Sydney
Pick 29 Charlie Spargo Melbourne
Pick 30 Tom De Koning Carlton

2018

Pick 28 Xavier O'Neill West Coast
Pick 29 Will Kelly Collingwood
Pick 30 William Hamill Adelaide

Interesting as Twomey also said on podcast today that Pickett is likely a third round pick, from pick 35 onwards. Wonder why he’s giving out mixed messages?

Pickett is pick 30-50 range. Unless we gain later picks, he’s not worth considering with what we have.

Will more than likely go 15 to 25 now.  Was mis-rated early on and now getting some serious attention.

He is worth every bit of pick 8 if we somehow miss Stephens and Kemp

There are no other stand outs beyond those two and Young that offer the X factor/goal kicking potential of Kozzie.

We’re taking about the same player right? The 170cm guy who kicks one goal every second match? What attributes does he have that have shot him up the draft boards suddenly?

He’s not a big goal scorer - averaged 0.5 goals a game at senior SAFL level.

He’s got a good leap - but he needs to have a good leap to even just be competitive at 170cms.

He’s quick, but not elite quick - not in top 20 tested.

He has poor-average endurance - doesn’t find much ball, averaged 10 touches.

His best attribute is he provides good defensive pressure around packs in the forward line.

Statistically he’s identical to Charlie Spargo. IMO the best outcome for his career would be an in form Jeff Garlett. Don’t get me wrong, he could be a handy little small forward and have a decent career, but at pick 8 you can pick up much better than that. It would be negligent for the club to draft him at pick 8.

I think those stats are a little unfair. He kicked 14 goals in 7 games at SANFL reserves level - so already up 1 level from his peers.

And averaged 17 disposals at Colts level last year.

As with a lot of kids he's had to split time between school footy, SANFL reserves, SANFL seniors and the National champs.

14 disposals and 3 tackles at the Champs from 3 games - even with only 2 goals - shows he's a guy who gets involved in games. The comparison I'd make for him would be Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti.

I do agree he's not one I'd have in the frame at pick 8 but with a pick from 15-25 I'd have a good look.

Compared to Cyril Rioli and also is a Cousin to our own Nev Jetta which should squash any go-home factor fears.

If we split for pick 17, we must pull the trigger.

Cal Twomey said he wouldn't be surprised if we split pick 8 for two picks in the teen to really zero in and select Pickett.

Based on what I have seen on his highlights reel and the fact he is related to Byron gives me goosebumps. i, Too would select him over Weightman. The other interesting thing about the Hun article this morning was that Byron has two sons around the 12/13 mark. Hey Dazzle, have you any info on these two? sons of Byron?

That would probably mean losing the bloke we want at 8. Also Pickett could go before the 2nd pick we get, IF we actually wanted him.

That is what they would have to weigh up.

Not many players have an immediate impact when they first step up to a senior level of footy.

Kicked 6 in one match at reserve level...

Doesn't find much ball? ..quality small forward don't need to find alot of it and tend not to a la Jeffy, Cyril etc to make a quality impact.  How often have we heard the phrase "give me 15 quality touches vs 30 that are mostly rubbish or result in mostly turnovers anyday".

You can't compare him to anyone at AFL level at this point (statistically) ...he hasn't played.  Rediculous comparison.

What attributes does he have well let me name a few...

> Has a great leap ...equal 9th in the running jump at combine.  Can take an awesome specky and also alows him to keep the ball alive in the air at times (eg;  tapping a high bouncing ball or one off a pack to advantage) or defend from behind if needed.

> Doesn't lose his feet easily

> Fierce tackler

> Great follow up second efforts including repeat tackles

> knows where the goals are (sixth sense off one or two steps) and clever at reading / waiting off the ball and crumbing.

> Bides his time just outside the main scrum sweating on the spillage or loose ball without getting sucked into the contest.

If he already has all this at his tender age....imagine how much further upside there is with a few pre-seasons and experience at the highest level.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
