We're 5-12 having a horrible season in a very even competition and only a 3 wins off 9th. After a dreadful 1-5 start we've gone 4-7 and been a real shot to win plenty of those games.

The summer from hell played out in the first month of the year, and then we spent most of the first half of the season without important defenders. No May, no Lever, no Jetta and at times even Hibberd and Hore missing. Even Salem missed a game and Frost knocked himself out in one. We were bad kicking away from beating the Crows with May/Lever/Jetta/Hore/Salem.

Then we spent the last few weeks without Melksham, Tom McDonald and a back up key forward in Smith or Weideman and a lot of the choices to play in the forward line - Hannan, Spargo, Joel Smith, Garlett have had significant interruptions as well.

Our best outside midfielder in Fritsch has had to play forward and often back. There's very little a coach can do with constant shifting of players.

In large patches of games we've made the Eagles (twice) and Crows look ordinary. We had a real opportunity to push the Pies and gave them a nice touch up in the midfield, just needed some composure down back and to take some chances up forward.

It's easy to kick the coach and he's not blameless for some of the fundamental skill errors and poor set ups we've seen but really I think so much of what's gone wrong is out of his control and possible to turn around quickly.

 

No, Fritsch belongs in the forwards. When played as an outside midfielder he becomes the king of the turnovers.

picks....talent...whatever...pointless if the FD/Coaching isnt up to scratch.    Look what our Box has don to many who could play decent footy (once)

The draft is irrelevant to our eventual success....Direction of Football is what is IS all about.

Charlie Curnow, McKay, Weitering, Petrevski Seton, O' Brien, Walsh, Cripps, Zac Fisher, Settlefield, Marchbank are all good young players who will be gun players once they get to the 80-100 game mark.

Their spine is set for the next 10 years. McKay and Curnow are forward who you build around and Cripps and Walsh in the midfield will be superstars. Marchbank, Jones and Weitering are solid defenders who will hold their backline for the next 5 years.

They are well placed for the future.

They are still a pretty ordinary team but a good ordinary team when their backline features: Jones/Weitering/Marchbank/Plowman/Daisy Thomas/Newman/Simpson. You'd want the young guys more experienced and the old guys younger but whenever they've had close to that line up out there - particularly Newman/Thomas/Simpson - they've been super competitive. Those older guys miss and they get flogged.

And we brained them apart from kicking straight to be 30 up at 3/4 time (should've been close to 60).

*Yeah but Carlton* and *they sacked  their coach* ignores the reality they aren't all that bad.

Once again our kicking and decision making cost us the game. Even down to Fritsch in the dying minutes kicking the ball into the center of the ground and missing the target. Yes it’s one play, but it’s the constant poor decisions and missing targets and easy shots on goal that just kill you as a supporter. And robs the team of all momentum. 

Our backline is fully stocked but they aren’t meshing. They are lost, they spoil each other and are constantly out of position. I’m going to give it time as they need to play together for a while to get in a groove, but my god Jetta and Lever are so rusty. Lever looks really unsure of his knee, Jetta looks exhausted and Frost is I don’t even know. He is a brain fade short of an aneurism. 

May has been magnificent. Clearly battling fitness still, but he is a presence and did a great job on Kennedy who destroys us on the regular. Despite his poor showing in pre season he has been a great get for us. 

Overall this game is a perfect summation of this season. A few highs, a lot of lows and plenty of frustration. 

I am not convinced lever is a future star. He is one of those players who is very noticable in the spoil but that is in effect a negative act. a wait and see for me.

Even with turnovers he's still far and away our best outside player. I actually think his worst turnovers come from slow plays at half back, getting him the ball going forward  - whether that's forward or on the wing and he can do some great damage.

We got by today with the Wagner's on the wings but that's not a long term solution. 

They've been trying to draft wings and half forwards for a while now and it's yet to work out. The point is we'd ideally have about 4 Fritsch's in the side (and we'd clearly work on the turnovers) but we only have 1.

BS. He’s a forward. Look at today’s game vs any other game this year. And he missed some goals because he’s been played on the wing or back so long he’s out of practice!!!

We certainly played some decent footy. But some of the turnovers and missed shots on goal killed us. 

Clarry back in form was great. But he’s still got to work on not handballing to a teammate about to get set upon. 

I thought pre game Lewis should get a defensive job on Hurn. With him out it surprised me he went to McGovern. But he did a decent job as a forward. 

Fritsch is such a natural forward. He played a fantastic game but missed a couple he could have kicked. His late turnover killed us. 

The backline was good. May has been an excellent addition and Lever started to get back to his intercepting best. 

Unfortunately Preuss isn’t a forward. Smith or Weideman in for him next week. 

We had some really good patches through the midfield and if we can carry that on throughout the remainder of the year we should be competitive. 

We clearly ran out of gas in the end but hopefully we can carry a bit of momentum into next week. Although the saints will be buzzing.

Oh Pruess was pathetic , Tim Smith a better option

Thought Lockhart was actually playing on Jetta and he had no impact on the game either.

They got on top of us in the midfield in the last was it fitness, Oliver had  just two disposals.

Man our turnovers hurt us, we deserve to be 17th.

The year has thrown up three things.

1. Our list lacks class

2. Goodwin is struggling bigtime

3. We need X factor.

 

PS let's go after Josh Thomas at seasons end!

Im not sure...maybe someone who was counting could chime in but Lever took a fair swag of intercept marks.

I have a theory regarding Jake. I think he's more used to a team where having marked he can look up to any number of decent options....and then he came to us !!

It's really not. Fritsch is a talented full forward on the right match up but they'll be games he'd go blanketed there and his defensive work as a forward is poor to non existent.

At full strength like last year we rotated Tom McDonald, Petracca, Melksham and Hannan through the deepest forward spot who could all do what Fritsch did today. Tommy against bigger and better defenders, Hannan and Melk with more defensive efforts, Petracca more at ground level.

Meanwhile we'd play Fritsch on a wing where his tank, ability to swoop on to a lose ball or handball receive and kicking could create goals.

It was nice to see him play forward more and he should always get a look in that position, but the guy is a utility like Jack Gunston and his best value will be using him in multiple roles. If we land Brad Hill and Ed Langdon he'll probably be used forward a lot, but otherwise we'll need his class up the ground.

To me we lost him or gave him away. He needed to have a clear head to hold on to him. Is it possible to find an imposing forward that can mark and kick goals who wants to play for us?  And who are they?  Can l hope?

Yes, I can see that where he is used to linking up with a chip kick. I am sort of judging in on what we gave up to get him which is not aimed  on him personally, rather on MFC

A clear game high 12 intercept possessions and 2 contested marks.

He's never been a great kick but he has had nice fast hands and is a reliable kick who moves quickly to take the options. Was a bit lazy/lacked confidence with some kicks that bounced out in front of team mates but still was keen to get involved and move the ball on.

His best footy is getting 10 marks - a decent amount with intercepts, 20 touches, using it nicely and setting up the backline around him.

Today he looked like a good player who was rusty which is a fair step forward from last week.

He evaded an opponent, was half tackled, and ducked his head right at the last minute as an opponent was coming in. It was called as ducked and I see why the ump did that but the defender was rushing in to clean him up as he was tackled. It was a non free kick based on all the cheats who'd duck at will but I'm inclined to think it's a free kick when a player has been tackled right away and it still trying to evade. Tricky one.

No. I would get some new recruits in by hook or by crook. None of our players is up to a fast “outside mid” role.
