Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2020 Assistant Coach Prospects: The Next Batch

Just wondering if it's worth us having a central place to discuss our thoughts on a reasonably feasible coaching lineup for next season?

It's not that far away from when the pieces start to move as contracts finish during August.

Happy for other posters to put forward their own potential vacancies/options, but as it stands now from a mix of rumour, intuition, club situation and 'the good word' the following is a list of spots that could be open followed by some suggestions on who is realistically 'gettable' and could suit our specific needs:

Senior Assistant/Mentor: Brad Scott, Brendon Bolton, Michael Voss, John Barker, Cameron Bruce ('good word').
With all the rumours flying about McCartney, there's definitely a feel he may not be around next year.

Forward Coach: Leigh Adams, Brad Miller.
No source, but just a feeling Rawlings could be annoyed by having to move from coaching his own outright team. May move back to Casey, may move on.

Development Coach (at least 1 spot probably): Brendon Bolton, Brett Kirk.
With McCartney possibly gone from this area, you could also add Rooke to the list who may not be around next year.

Midfield Development Coach: Dean Solomon, Jordan Lewis.
Would think Plapp could be in danger of not being renewed.

Strategy Coordinator: Adem Yze, Brett Montgomery.
A usually good source has surprisingly told me Jennings will look to move on end of season.

Goal Kicking Coach (Part Time): Brad Green, Nick Riewoldt, David Neitz, Matthew Lloyd.
New position, clearly needed.

What do you think Demonland? Any rumours floating around? Anyone you think the club should be talking to for a specific role? Or any roles we don't have that we should?

NB - No former Demons were included solely on the basis they are former Demons.

Nigel Lappin and Blake Carecella are two coaches i would be talking to.

If the rumours are true that we will be trying to lure Brendan Bolton then that would be a huge get!

I like Ben Matthews as our midfield coach, i think he has shown with our young on ball brigade that he is capable of developing good midfielders. I would add someone like a Brett Kirk next to him.

Jaryd Roughead forward coach?  Lewis will stay on in a coaching role next season so we might be a chance to lure Roughie over.

I like the idea of getting former players back. Yze and Green are my preferences.

Brad Scott anyone?

Yeah there's big raps on Lappin and Caracella, only reason I didn't list them is that I thought they might not leave their current environments at big successful clubs for us after they year we've had. Would definitely be keen though. Money talks, so worth a crack for sure.

I hope Mathews stays, I think his particular areas of focus have been good overall for us, just not sure Plapp will be kept on.

Absolutely! Forgot about him to be honest. Seems a natural coach from the outside, and as a player always good on the lead he would be great for us.

As above, I wouldn’t mind Lewis whispering in Roughy’s ear to bring him down. An article a few weeks back had the Suns interested in Roughead for a possible off-field role next season. Go for it I say.

Where does ‘land stand on Chaplin remaining as backline coach? Any potential candidates available should he be moved on?

You've had a crack at me about the "what ifs and hypotheticals" regarding our 2020 injury situation on the Jones thread, yet you start an entire thread about Assistant Coaches, which is mostly all about "what ifs and hypotheticals".

Oh the irony.

There's a difference between saying Jones is a 'selfish' player who is only being selected to get to 300 games, despite all the evidence to the contrary, and discussing potential assistant coaches for next year after a year where we have under performed and had a coaching restructure.

I'm not sure how those things are in any way similar, related or 'ironic'. But if you'd like to discuss the topic then go right ahead.

You'd think we'd be looking to review everyone and perhaps so assistants who've been in winning situations as coaches rather than fresh ex players who've never been in winning coaches boxes.

If you look at the current AC's we don't really have any "winners" in that group from a coaching prospective they all seem to point to playing success on the clubs website as to a reason many of them got the gig rather than being in great coaching/winning environments.

Agree mate. Just my impression as an outsider, but seems like Goodwin initially may have wanted all the power and responsibility, which is understandable as a former champion player, but the lack of experienced support has definitely shown in our performances, and his health potentially, this year, so facilitating him being able to delegate more and have more support seems like the best thing for his coaching development (and our club).

Which is a classic "Paul Roos Assistant Coaching Model 2.0".  Put experienced people with proven coaching/development ability in key roles, blood newbies coming through to work under said key people.

So, according to your OP, you have made claims about the following current Assistants;

McCartney - With all the rumours flying about McCartney, there's definitely a feel he may not be around next year.

Rawlings - No source, but just a feeling Rawlings could be annoyed

Rooke - you could also add Rooke to the list who may not be around next year

Plapp - Would think Plapp could be in danger of not being renewed

Jennings - Jennings will look to move on end of season

Goal kicking coach - New position

You are making all these judgements on what exactly?  I'm making men about Jones based on the fact that he's as slow as a wet week, and being asked to play in a role where he has continually been isolated by his direct opponent (I think it was @Lucifer's Hero that was told by an opposition team about this exact point).

Not even half way through school holidays yet.  Sigh.

Mate, I'm not interested in a game of internet tennis with you. I explained my reasoning for all that in the original post.

If you want to discuss the topic, I'm happy to engage with you, but I'm not interested in this kind of stuff.

Cheers.

In regards to Jordan Lewis, is it been confirmed by anyone that he is staying on a cosching capacity?

Nup. I think most of us are just assuming it's a possibility given what we've done in the past with Vince and Cross, combined with how Lewis has talked about his passion for helping our younger players develop.

Suits me.  I'll leave this topic alone for now and revisit it throughout the offseason to see how much you got right.  You've made some interesting claims that we will find out how accurate they are in due course.

Cheers to you.

Fair enough, if the couple of claims I've made in there don't turn out then I'll expect a whack.

I haven't had that info.  There are several posters that have 'lucifer' in their moniker.

Potentially add a spot in the Next Generation Academy to the above list too...

"Leading Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League coach Paddy Swayn has been hit with a seven-match suspension for abusing umpires."

"The tribunal found him guilty and suspended him for seven games, meaning he is unable to coach for the rest of the home-and-away series and the first week of finals."

"Swayn is one of the MPNFL’s most respected and informed coaches — he is involved in the Melbourne Next Generation Academy and a mentor program overseen by the AFL South East"

"Edithvale-Aspendale coach and former Melbourne defender Graeme Yeats came out after the game and accused the Pines bench of trying to bounce the umpires. “From where I stood, it was clearly an intimidating attitude from their bench towards the umpires,” Yeats told Leader last Sunday. “It was really disappointing because it was a really young umpire. It was a really bad look for the game. It was a throwback from 20 years ago.”

I think Lewis will go straight into the media when his playing career finishes.

I doubt he will stay on as an assistant.

No inside info just an observation.

Think I read somewhere here he was in the Casey coaching box for a few games? He's also worked with the MFC coaches this year according to Mahoney:

"After chatting with Jordan about the next phase in his development, we decided that he would step away from the leadership group this season and transition into a role working closely with the coaches," Mahoney said.

No guarantee that means anything for next of course, but he could do media as well as be an assistant coach.

In considering our coaching  stock I'm reminded that Fish rot from the head down.

Our real problems imho lay squarely at the senior coaching and management.

The whole style and nature of our game is wrong, counterproductive  and ruinous of careers ( and bodies )

Assistants  are only doing the daily bidding of the senior coach(s).

Our problems  are more the effect of design. We have decent enough material .... its the Architecture  of our game that's  flawed. We need to get rid of this firm and get people who actually  have an idea of what to do.This lot don't.

and I would have thought there were actually quite a few Dees among those names in the OP

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
