Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Please post your full phantom draft, preferably up to at least pick 60, by the weekend. Might be great to CC it to Jason Taylor too, because clearly your credentials are imposing for him and he'll take notice.

I'll then look forward to waiting 3-4 years before we all utterly pull up apart your selections.

Cheers.

LordNev - as I’ve said to @Moonshadow and a couple of others, if you can come up with $200k/p.a and have JT sit out of the job for three years I will halt what I’m currently doing and give it a red hot crack. Until that can be arranged I’ll continue to critique from the terraces like any keen observer.

You make it sound as though I think our recruiting team gets every decision wrong. Not the case at all. I just don’t feel we get enough right.

The point is though, you're happy to be Captain Hindsight and pot decisions made by professionals, yet you're seemingly too scared to actually put forth your opinions based on future predictions. If you're not already in a recruitment role, despite apparently wanting the income, I'm not sure why you feel the need to continually bash decisions made by far more qualified people.

I honestly would be really keen to hear your thoughts on whom we should draft this year. You seem to be really into it, and I've not followed the draft that closely the last couple of years.

I'd really prefer if you didn't. I'm not prepared for another 20 years in the bottom 4. I'm happy with JT's list having 1 blip on the radar of their otherwise consistent rise up the ladder

Freo took Ed Langdon with the very next pick (54) by the way.

Here is the top ten draft picks that year - how many would you class as a success?

With your "'excellent'" use of hindsight, you probably had De Goey as number one back in 2014

As Melbourne supporters well know, getting it right is very difficult for a huge number of reasons

1 Paddy McCartin St Kilda Geelong Falcons TAC Cup
1 2 Christian Petracca Melbourne Eastern Ranges TAC Cup
1 3 Angus Brayshaw Melbourne Sandringham Dragons TAC Cup Free agency compensation pick (Frawley)
1 4 Jarrod Pickett Greater Western Sydney South Fremantle WAFL
1 5 Jordan De Goey Collingwood Oakleigh Chargers TAC Cup Traded from Brisbane Lions
1 6 Caleb Marchbank Greater Western Sydney Murray Bushrangers TAC Cup Traded from Western Bulldogs
1 7 Paul Ahern Greater Western Sydney Calder Cannons TAC Cup Traded from Carlton
1 8 Peter Wright Gold Coast Calder Cannons TAC Cup

It’s time consuming and tedious to keep responding to this type of reply. You miss the ‘point’ and I’m not ‘scared’ of anything. I looked at the available data re Taylor’s post-R1 recruiting from 2013-2017 and formed an opinion on it based on that. It was not based on reviewing one year or one particular selection analysed in isolation. I’m not here to thoughtlessly pat people on the back at every opportunity but to praise, critique and if necessary apportion blame according to things as I see them. I’m interested in the success of the MFC and accountability for those in positions of power running it. Nothing more, nothing less. Please look that last italicised word up. It’s an important consideration that some posters aren’t always ready to acknowledge.

Who should we draft this year? Well I’m not even sure we should draft kids in the first two rounds given our mandate to play finals in 2020.  But if we do I’ll leave it to the paid experts to get it right. That’s all you can do as supporter is it not? That and opine on footy forums and such.

Yes, it is tedious indeed. I hope this is a bit of a full stop to the barrage of posts about the matter then. Perhaps we can get onto being constructive about it? (Hence my question about this year's draftees).

I'll look forward to your 2019 phantom draft in 2020 then. Cheers.

If you’ve read my posts about Taylor’s recruiting you would know that my criticisms fall on his post-R1 recruiting. Most clubs have the top 10-20 very similarly configured heading into each draft. It’s picks 20 - 60 and rookie draft where the seriously keen eyed scouts earn their pay packets.

That said, Weid (9) over Curnow (11) in 2015 was an incredible balls up by Taylor. Following in a long tradition of intermittent MFC stuff ups at the pointy end. 2007 Morton/Dangerfield&Rioli, 2008 Watts/Naitanui, 2009 Scullgove/Dusty and Gysberts/Talia, 2010 Cook/Darling, 2012 Toumpas/Wines, 2013 Josh Kelly trade, 2014. Etc etc.

Or the selection of an overweight country kid who couldn’t even get a guernsey for the Nationals Champs at pick 4.

Demonland does not have a good strike rate for predicting contract renewals.

There wouldn’t be a single player on our list who hasn’t been a ‘delist’ or ‘trade for zero or nearest offer’

To state the obvious, this is an unpopular opinion on here, but I think Oscar is a more naturally talented ball player than his brother. He’s also subject to the same slumps of confidence, and we’ve seen what that’s done to Tom this season. People forget very quickly that for most of last year, he was one of the first ten players picked each week, based on form, and we played in a prelim. Finals-experienced 23 year olds having form slumps don’t just get tossed aside. Yes, he could be bigger and stronger, but that can be worked on. I don’t doubt he will be groomed as a key forward over the next couple of years. Thankfully the club has a more logical perspective than Demonland,  exceptions granted.

Well said, I am really glad the Club are taking this line with developing young players. Shows a bit more foresight than some people.

It won’t matter how big or small they make his physique, he doesn’t have the agility and athleticism necessary to succeed at this level. He is a VFL or A grade amateur footballer. There is no shame in that. Everybody needs to accept it and move on.

Oscar for me is Exhibit A on why you should never just automatically draft one of your better player’s brothers. He was never going to make it as an AFL key defender with his obvious limitations. Waste of a draft pick.

Do you know that he was drafted because he was Tom's bro?   Were you told that by someone in our recruiting department?  Or perhaps at the time he appeared to be the next best pick?

Imagine constantly potting a player for not developing, building his strength, having good form, and then an article comes out explaining he's been doing those very things midseason, in a club infamous for poor development no less, and you take the opportunity to pot him yet again (on the internet).

Our supporter culture is often as toxic as the club culture that's been worked on so hard.

Never let the facts spoil a good put down Nev.

IMO kudos on the club for trying something completely different.

Actually I think he has shown great mental strength surviving all the excrement that some here seem to enjoy piling upon him (if he reads it, or hears about it).

How does not rating a player become delight in saying so? I’ve never understood this perception by posters such as yourself. Where do you pull that conclusion from? I can’t speak for others but I never feel that way when negatively critiquing a player.

So why do you write it? Please explain.

Can we move the 'forensic analysis' of personal philosophies of online forum etiquette  to another thread please?

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
