Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Mahoney did say that the players were consulted as part of the review process that saw the coaching changes made. This is the same group of players that got the infamous training camp cancelled by the AFLPA, so I wouldn't be surprised if McCartney had been moved due to the playing group thinking he was too hard on them. Clearly if McCartney is saying things like reported here to fans over the fence at training then we're in a bad place at the moment.

I can't really decide what my outlook on it all is. We're in a time with AFL players where there is a generational shift in approach and the 'old school' ways aren't always the best way to reach them anymore. However, for a club where players have called the shots for so long and is renowned for being 'mentally soft' and a bit of a 'boys club' I do wonder if we're allowing too much push back on that harder style.

I heard Mahoney say they were 'consulted' but not sure it referred specifically Macca.  And 'consulted' could be 'this is the plan guys, any problems'; as distinct from player discontent causing the move.  Especially, as there had been no whispers about player discontent but lots of whispers about Macca and a coach(es).  I recall Jennings name being mentioned.

I guess we just need to wait and see if we get back our finals level of ferocity which doesn't need talent or skill.

I can't get behind the pay wall, any chance of sending a PM with the content?  Cheers.

Yeah have heard the same thing, and recall and awkward moment watching one of our games this year where Goodwin had to cover up McCartney's headset so he could get a word in to the coaches box (they were both down at boundary level at the time). Just seems strange that they would then move McCartney away from the players and into a role more directly involved with the coaches. In the end, could be not a big deal and I'm reading into things too much, but I just feel we wouldn't make such major moves mid-season without there being significant issues that needed immediate addressing.

Interesting reading Cam Mooney's thoughts on McCartney in the HS this morning. An interpretation I took away from it was that our players might be a bit soft and that's what has caused the rumoured friction that has lead to McCartney being moved around so much and finally put in a role that's away from the players.

Mooney quote from the article: “I think some of these kids today need a big bag of cement and to harden up."

Are you telling me that the playing group who ran through a 'mean tweets' banner are soft?

I am shocked.

Thought that was a great initiative actually. Social media has become a pretty dark place gradually and the irony of the reaction to this activation was not lost on me. It's obviously not just players it effects, but once you get a bit older you realize most of the players are just kids, and when you have them having to shut down their social media accounts (not a small thing for young people) due to the harassment they are copping from their own supporters, then it's time people had a think about how they act on it.

I am not against the initiative.  Social media is garbage and I am all for it being nuked from orbit.

I am against them running through that ridiculous banner and announcing to the footy world "We are the MFC and we are still soft as butter".

Fair enough mate. I'll be at the front of the queue with you in terms of calling out our culture as soft, I just disagree the banner thing is emblematic of that. Cheers!

A team that has gone from top 4 one year to bottom 3 halfway through the next has "significant issues". It might not be solely be due to the players being out of form or unfit/injured. Perhaps also the coaches, as a group, haven't got their act together. Changes to the coaches (whether that means to individuals, roles or just the way they coach) may be just as necessary as changing playing personnel. It's just that from the outside, we can't see what the problems with the coaches might be.

Tom McDonald dominant.  No coincidence.

All our problems have been because of the coaching roles we got so horribly wrong.  Why the hell was Rawlings ever sent to the VFL?

But he’s not AFL standard ?

That was my question. Apparently I hear (without inside knowledge) that the players really respond to him and respect the way he goes about it, so it stands to reason to bring a person like that back into the gameday group. The players are elevated and demoted , so the coaching panel probably should be the same. It is called management

He was worst on ground playing quite possibly the worst game I've ever seen for 3/4's of the game against inexperienced defenders (Ryan was on Smith and Hamling on Hannan).

Did Rawlings only start coaching at 3/4 time?

Rawlings wasn't "sent" to the VFL. He's a rising star as a coach and wanted/deserved to be in charge of a team in his own right to continue his development. Won coach of the year last year too. It's more that he's been "sent" to Melbourne now, rather than "sent" to Casey previously.

Considering Hogan looks to have aggravated his foot again maybe trading him will turn out to be an astute decision.

As for the coaching, if players can't pick up the ball cleanly , kick to advantage, handball to teammates in the clear or hold simple marks by now.
No coach will fix them.
There's nothing wrong with their endeavour, it's their execution of basic skills.
We have a side full of habitual butchers.
Poor turnovers kill us , time after time.
And if the ball does find its way all the way into the hands of our forwards, they struggle to put it through the big sticks.
Soul destroying stuff all over the ground.

We need to invest in decent recruiters as far as I'm concerned.

Seems the football department got a bit ahead of itself at the start of the year. Development coaches don't always make great line coaches. Max Rooke and Brendan McCartney were deployed as line coaches (after success in development roles) and it would appear that they and the players haven't excelled together. So they go back to their previous successful roles. If none of the coaches have their noses out of joint , then we move on. Think Max will be the one that might be gone at seasons end not Brendan.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
