Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I can't understand why May was on De Goey at all. It wasn't just being caught in transition. He matched up on him in the 6-6-6 formation - the one time when you can truly see who is playing on whom.

I should add I don't agree with the earlier assertion that the Pies went through May as an identified weakness. Rather, I thought May played well. In fact, the defence as a whole did a terrific job.

Because with Frost off we had no one else.

When JDG and Stephenson were both forward: Hibberd had to to got to Stephenson. May had to go to De Goey. Any other defender - Hore, Lever, Fritsch, Wagner on either of those guys would've been a disaster. That's why long term we probably need to replace Wagner or Hore with a mobile shut down player, although short term getting Frost and eventually Jetta should be a good start.

I thought May did a number on Cox a few times early, held a couple of marks and got good hands to others. Then he held De Goey pretty well. Ran him under the ball with good physical pressure on every occasion aside from once when De Goey turned him and goaled.

May isn't a pure lock down defender but he can do it. Frost should be the lock down tall defender. Lever the interceptor. May then can take the match up and play it as per the circumstances.

Agree but I would like to review KK in three more matches. Pity that Casey have a bye just when he and JKH need some match practice.

Agree I hadnexcluded KK because I reckon he is a month away due to his fitness level.

JKH I have watch closely for most of his time at the MFC and a l have decided he is sadly one of those players that is good at VFL but not good enough at the higher level.

I understand why he got De Goy, particularly after Frost went down. He is a bull and twiggy Lever would not have been  able to take him. Maybe hore and maybe Hibberd but De Gooey is their most dangerous forward and to me it made sense for may to get him. But bottom line is his opponent kicked 3 and his (well paid) job is to stop opponents kicking goals.

The defence was under huge pressure all day and did ok but to be honest they could have got 8 on us in the first q if they had kicked straight.

In that first quarter their zone was all over the place with the pies finding free players with kicks over the top into pockets of space. And who was in the hole in front of Stephenson? No one is the answer as that peanut BT kept pointing out. How does that happen playing a zone defence?

I guess though, in their defence (pardon the pun) , Salem and Frost were off in that first q so some confusion was justifiable given they had never played together as a unit.

In a side that can't kick a goal, he's averaging two per game for us . . . (admittedly a small sample [2 games]). He competes well, relieves Max in the ruck (even if it's just in the forward 50 arc), brings others into the game and takes the pressure off Tommy and Sam. There's something badly amiss . . .

Sums it up - fitness can be built, consistently, in specialised cases where the need exists. He is not fast, true. Improved speed can be built, consistently, in specialised cases where the need exists. He can relieve Max, true. He is a presence weapon in the fwd 50 arc, true. He brings the smalls into the game for their ground-level activity and by his protection, true. He will continue to learn given the correct coaching and experience, true. Something is badly amiss .... true, and it is selection protocols, favourites and hand-baggers where too much is expected of too few, too often and it penalises their longevity.

The loss of Frosty was a case of extreme bad luck - his game would have contributed to managing the Filth forwards, enormously, given the structure that we had - and lost. Salem was hurt as well and carried on - but I am sure he was still affected across the game by the collision with Frosty.

Out - T Mac, Spargo, J Wagner, Jones

I can guarantee TMac and  Jones will NOT be dropped !!

Lockart , maybe, but I feel he is learning his craft in the VFL.

If we had an outside MId who can run like the wind, then Viney as small fwd and Spargs back to correct some issues. ( Although you cannot doubt his effort and courage.)

and without his 3 goals we would have lost by more, if Petracca had of taken the simple mark set up by brilliant Garlett creativity then we may have won..

They cant all be Jack Viney and go head first, players are different, they are made of different things. I just reckon Jeff is the least of our problems. Its a good talking point Mono.

It's not just about one game.

This club especially,  cannot have players who choose to not go,  when its their turn.   If we ever want to become a real hard team, to play against.   A team to be respected.

If its your turn to... you go.

Preuss at *VFL* level: 5 goals in 5 games. One goal in last three games.

6 goals in 17 VFL games last season at North.

He's a goal-kicking machine.

He plays ruck at VFL level.  Dont care what he does down there anyway, he has produced in he two AFL games he has played for us, and thats what matters.

My concern on May early in the game was that the was leaving his man to attack aerial contests but attempting to mark instead of spoil with the result that his man was free. He seemed more effective after quarter time and commentators on The Age podcast complimented his work in repeatedly bodying Cox out of position. They were critical of the fact that Cox had been played at all and said he was outplayed by May.

May did a good job on Cox...repeatedly pushed him under the ball without infringing (taking him out of the contest).

Its a pretty outdated philosophy DV8 to be honest.. all players and people are wired differently.. i think with Jeff to many people look at what he isnt doing and ignore what he is.

But each to their own.

Fair call... but somehow what he doesn’t do is looking twice as obvious as it used to do. Gives me no pleasure to say it as I’m a Jeffy fan. He just seems really weighed down somehow , even when he kicks a goal he barely celebrates. Looks like a man w the world on his shoulders.

I agree Wells, he does look weighed down, i notice this a swell, there inst the spark in him there once was, who knows what is going on, i just think right now, he is best 22, albeit maybe just.

Wired differently,  yes of course,  (I was born a timid kid who was bullied from 5 to 18)...

I was stifled in my growth from that.  It took a hell of a lot of work and persistence to work my way until I grew physically heavier and then with a combo of things a change in belief and attitude which also  then coincided with road rage as an outlet which needed some more adjustment.

I have taken on gangs of blokes,  and stood up for individuals, stepping in to fights to break the up,  or to save someone down on the ground,  who was in harms way.

I am still a mess...  but one with some pride,  self respect and Will... and I will run into a burning building, (always would have)  and will stand up to bullies,  and others wishing to control and demean.  (easier to back up others who are being bullied or assaulted)

So jeffy is a no,  from me.   He is the same as when at Carlton...  he had one very good season, where he did commit... then went off again.

So pardon me, I am not inspired by what jeffy is.  or any soft types in the red and blue.

I like the way you've nonchalantly dropped in the last line. Without explanation, as if it's so obvious nothing more needs to be said.

I may be one out here, but i would keep Jeffy in the team. He is a one touch player, creates and is more capable than others.

I know he is a bit scared at times and a bit soft, but thats not our problem.. goals are our problem and he has kicked 5 in 3 weeks, 10 shots.. and goal assists

 here is some comparisons

JEFFY - 10 tackles and 5.5 in last 3 weeks. (leads tackles inside 50 for year and has played only 7 games)

HUNT  - 3 tackles and 3.4 in last 3 weeks

SPARGO - 8 tackles and 2.1 in last 3 weeks

TRAC - 7 tackles and 3.2 in last 3 weeks.

*Jeffy has played only 7 games, is 4th on goal kicking - cant understand dropping him calls.

Jeffy used to keep his feet but nowadays goes to ground too quick.

IN: T. Smith, ANB, Lockhart, Lewis

OUT: TMac, Spargo, J.Wagner, Viney

Time for TMac and Viney to either go back to VFL level for some work on their respective form and skill issues, or to go and get the medical procedures they seem to need to allow them to be ready to work on those things from day 1 of preseason.

Would like to see Lewis played in a half forward role where we can try utilizing his foot skills to improve our inside 50 delivery.

ANB has had a struggle of a year, but he could bring some much needed forward pressure along with Lockhart, who along with Hunt and Garlett could really give us a dynamic mix of smalls.

I can't see Preuss coming in at this stage given our weaknesses of creating forward space, winning ground balls inside 50 and applying defensive pressure inside 50. He'll be a real asset after another preseason or two, but his lack of a tank is in opposition to our manic game style currently. Would not be totally against him coming in though if ANB and Lockhart are both actually brought in to balance it out.

T Mac will not be dropped, but he should be managed/rested for the rest of the season.

We need him fit and firing next season desperately.

Who plays on that kid Hogan?

Doesn't matter or shouldn't

He is the player with the worst form fall off in the entire competition in one year.

Which of course means he will have a blinder and kick 6.We are very very good at playing people into form.

May

Agreed. May's the defender on the big bucks, so he takes the opposition's marquee key forward.

Hogan's had a rough month, but he still played a brownlow vote worthy game Vs Freo in round 5 and kicked 2 goals against Collingwood in round 11.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
