That's the kind of thinking we're facing here.

Meanwhile our opponents are wise to this and clog up the space in front of goal. But hey, what if we park TWO players 25m out from goal. Or ..... (lowers voice in case opposition coaches can here) .... what if we park THREE players 25m out!

Numbers can show a lot of things you wouldn't ordinarily notice, especially when presented in visual form (graphs, pie charts), but to be a slave to the numbers is as foolish as only betting on horses that have your "lucky" number.

Because our coaches are slaves to sports science and number crunching and have forgotton to use their own experience and instincts as players, and human beings. The tail is wagging the dog. And the dog is getting dizzy and is passing out. Look for a doubling down on the strategies that have proved unsuccessful this year.

Meanwhile the fans are trying to say "but he's not wearing any clothes!!!!!" What would we know.

They're embarrassing to watch repeat the same mistakes over and over. And with how transparent and one dimensional the game plan is, would be embarrassing to lose to. You get a sense now that the opposition are so ON to what we're doing that it would be considered a major coaching failure by any of the 17 other clubs if they were to lose to us.

Terry Wallace just said what a few of us on DL have said and that is start planning for 2020. Anyone injured should be rested and if operations are needed they should be done now.

Get everyone fit and ready to go next year and maybe some tinkering with the game plan. Get more games into the newer players and it will stand the club in good stead next year,  with a softer draw as a bonus.

Of course you still try and win, but not at the expense of next year.

Sorry to be a dog in the manger but Robbie and Stan played in many more losing sides than winning ones.

For many years Stan was the main reason to go see Melbourne; and for many years after he left Robbie was the main reason to go see Melbourne. We didn't see a lot of wins. Stan never played finals with us. Robbie waited until the end of his career to play three finals matches. Now a pair like them would be gold right now but let's not overstate their impact on the G or anywhere else.

And on related matters I agree TMac should be rested. Preuss may not be the answer long term but he is mobile and he is fearsome and able to break up aerial packs. He also has goal sense. Give him a run until TMac can return to his best.

I agree with others who don't see Spargo's value. He provides a contest is all. He is not a penetrating kick; rarely hits the scoreboard and buggers up other's work. He is unable to break free of the opposition and lacks the small man's best attribute which is pace. What they see in him is a mystery. Hopefully we'll all be proved fools when he becomes a star (unlikely).

He's right of course IMO, Red...  We have a short window with Gawn 27yrs,  and TMC as well,  around that age.

Watching the players shoot on goal prior to the big slide thingy, I commented to my mate how few were goals.  They were woeful in practice, and woeful in the game.  It is a basic skill ffs!

If we don’t use the rest of this year to get ourselves cherry ripe for 2020 and find out what we need to know about out of contract players, we are surely just wasting our time chasing a pipe dream. 

Let’s make the most of the second half of the year by giving players who need exposure all the games (is JHK any good? Do we keep Stretch? Which rookie gets an extension? Can Salem play wing now that Lever and May are back? If KK is fit can he play wing?). 

And for the love of god please send McDonald to some sort of healing retreat. I can’t  see him slowly and painful hobbling around any more.

The fact that people can't see why Spargo is in the team says a lot about them, not much about Spargo.

Unfair IMO.

I feel as though Spargo is getting the 2019 Coaches' award, a bit like ANB last year. Lots of running and contested work but no flair and poor skills.

It's one thing to say he's getting CPs and working hard but the reality is he offers very little offensively and as a forward, that's not great. It's one of the reasons ANB is playing VFL, not AFL.

No, it is Misson’s fault, he should have wrapped him in glad wrap and kept him isolated and quarantined between training and games. 

Basic stuff. 

If he didn’t have glad wrap he could have used bubble wrap or covered him in paper mache.

Coach has responsibility for performance of players.

I have asked Saty if training is conducted with intensity. The coach should be making sure performance is trialled and trained into players. 

Structures and patterns seem to generate enough possession etc so the coach gets that right but maybe needs to get a bit more into the heads of the players
