Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

He had what 7-8 clearances? He is dominating around the ground.

He's amazing.  The best ruckman since Simon Madden and there have been some good ones, like Dean Cox.  Grundy is a really good player but he got a lesson today from the big fella. His ability to cover the ground, win his own ball, gain metres and take contested marks is second to none.  His disposal efficiency is down compared to Grundy because he actually gains a lot of metres per game and tends to go long rather than short.

Some comments:

  • Huge game from Max.  A tragedy that our team did little with his great work.  And he had to do a lot of the work himself: 10 clearances.  9 from stoppages.  What were our inside players doing at the stoppages?
  • Wish he would learn to kick for goal.  Not a decider but that last kick went left, again!
  • Didn't like Buckley diminishing Max's game by saying Grundy played unfit.  Now most reviewers are qualifying Max's achievement by quoting Buckley.  Pumping up Grundy for AA ahead of Max but poor sportsmanship in my book.  They won.  He should have left it at that.

It  is an immense credit to Max that week after week he puts in champion level performances, sees his great work wasted but soldiers on.  Our team are letting him down very badly.

The thing I've loved about his season so far is that he's matured even more. Up until late last year, if he got frustrated during a game he would often start belting hitouts in random directions as hard as he could, but that habit has disappeared this year and some of his team mates could learn from that maturity.

Got 10 clearances. Ten! Insane.

Ruck rule changes have really helped him.

Gee  that's incredible! It makes you wonder what the other 4 guys on ball  are doing in the meantime.

Just another example of poor coaching at stoppages and  use of our available talent. I watched Max from the wing all afternoon. It was one of the best individual performances I have witnessed. On a few occasions he was beaten or our on ball brigade fluffed it he went again and again with multiple efforts.

Just was one great performances to witness.

Hes now 7th in coaches voting (after winning last year) and has 15 votes in the afl.com Brownlow predictor despite playing in just 3 wins.

Best player in the AFL, and whens the last time you could say that about a Demon player (50's, 60's?)

If Max is named AA this season (a certainty unless the selectors are corrupt and/or stupid) he will become our first 3 time AA since Garry Lyon.

I thought it was pretty poor form of Buckley to make that comment as well.

We have the best player in the game for the first time in 50+ years. Not only that, but he's a ruckman, and rarely is a ruckman at the top of the pile.

And yet, in quintessential Melbourne fashion, it stands for nothing: we are 3-9, have the league's worse forward line, an indifferent backlack, and a midfield that is like a puppy chasing a car: it doesn't know what to do with the ball when it finally gets it.

If Grundy returns to SA, something tells me Darcy Moore can emulate his old man and become an elite ruckman.

Having said that, nothing but full-marks for Gawn who has pushed himself to the limit.  I rated Grundy ahead of Gawn last year, and if Grundy was 100% fit, then that rating has to be questioned.

Gawn has many 10/10's, but does he take enough clunks; does he convert as much as he should; and do all of his possessions count.

They were clear to me, when there was a ball up at a stoppage and Grundy and Max were holding each other to maintain position, Max would get pinged for holding! Simple really.

Really dislike a sore winner. If Grundy wasn't fit then he should not have played! Sounded like an excuse to protect his player's reputation. Should have given credit where credit is due instead of pouting about his player being not at his best.

Correct.

The club made no excuses for Gawn in round 1 after he was hospitalized with an infection just days before the game. In fact nobody knew about it until after the game when some journo wrote it up.

Max now second in The Age player of the year behind Grundy, after polling 8 votes  in the win over Freo. Grundy on 77, Gawn 70, Tim Kelly 68 and Fyfe on 60. I'm tipping Max to run big Brodie down if we can put a few wins together in the last 9 games.  Looks like two rucks in the AA team again this year.

Mighty Max features again in the coaches votes with 7 votes this week.  And, is 7th on the Leaderboard.

69 Tim Kelly
62 Patrick Cripps
58 Travis Boak
56 Ben Cunnington
56 Brodie Grundy
54 Nat Fyfe
53 Max Gawn

On a different note, Max has had a torrid season off the ball with opp players getting into him physically.  It was constant against the Dockers with Max left flattened at least once that I saw.  No free of course!   In fact he received only 1 free all day.  Credit to him that he just keeps on going.

The club will now ask questions of the AFL on what is allowed.  From The Age. "Mahoney said the club would also contact the AFL this week for clarification on the off-the-ball tactics on ruckman Max Gawn.  The harassment of Gawn by Dockers players was constant during the weekend’s game and has been a regular tactic by teams playing the Demons since Port Adelaide employed the tactic successfully in the opening round".

Glad to see the club is finally taking some action to protect Max.

I love that Max doesn't play for frees or conplain to umpires. In fact our players are pretty good in this respect. Compare our players to the likes of Walters, Dangerfield, Ablett etc who all winge to the umpires whenever things dont go their way.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

When they locked up the rooms for summer at the end of last year’s football season, the rooms gathered cobwebs, the atmosphere became dense and the place developed a sleepy feel. They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. By the time they worked out it was game on, their opponents from Box Hill had accumulated five goals and, if the game wasn’t over, it might as well have been. For a se

A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
