Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

    Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

    Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

    We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

    However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

    The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

    Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

    We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

    WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

    Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Skills have been poor for 15 years GYM. How is that even possible?

Goal kicking is also a major problem and team work and player trust. Apart from that we are all good.

Agree, but think the answers are so obvious it would be a waste of time....

1. Injuries are hurting big time

2. Skills are poor

3. We're too slow, partly the interrupted pre-season, partly (4.) we've not targeted outside pace

4. Our recruiting has been (let's be glass half full...) below average

These are largely independent

1 needs to improve  over next 3 weeks (to some degree uncontrollable despite the anti-Mission sentiment on DL) 3 and 4 are priority for 2020.

2. Is simply an indictment on the whole Footy Department, not enough focus on skills, particularly kicking, especially goal kicking

Absolutely agree, but those conclusions should yield actual, meaningful outcomes.

For example, with 1, there's not much we can do about it, save for whatever comes of an investigation into whether Misson is doing his job properly. If he isn't, and has contributed to our current predicament, he should go.

Somebody needs to be held accountable for 2 (there are coaches for this, and our skills have gone backwards since last year) and 4 (again somebody has not done their job), as well as the fact that despite our lack of cattle or preseason, we play the most repetitively stupid football in the league, we don't work hard enough (and when we do, it's when the game is lost, or for some quarters in a game here or there), and the flip flopping has got to stop. We kind of tuned last week, we tried, and this week we may as well have not shown up.

Goody's contribution? This needs to be looked at. Again, repetitively stupid football. This is his job, and we seem to get outwitted every week. Mostly because everyone knows what Goody is going to do because he only has one play. How are we still bombing the ball into the 50?

But absolutely agree that 3 and 4 need to be a focus for 2020, as should be (another) overhaul of the players to work out who actually wants to be there/should be there.

It's sad that this is where we're at again, but this is why a full scale investigation into the mismanagement of our investment needs to happen now.

This is not about one loss but a litany of mistakes that will consign us to more years of misery. Who is accountable for;

1. Recruiting and trading the farm on Lever when everyone knew he had acl problem. An out and out disaster;

2. Recruiting May when the whole industry know he has discipline issues;

3. Recruiting Pruess so we can play him in the reserves every week;

4. Extending Goodwin contract for effectively 4 years after his Essendon involvement and with little demonstrated experience

5. Recruiting Kolodjashnij with known concussion;

6. Continuing to play Garlett when he wouldn’t even get a game in Hawthorn reserves

7 Recruiting players with names such as Sparrow; Jordon; Nietshke; Spargo; Petty; Baker; McKenna; Johnstone. Yet Geelong perennial winners pick Tim Kelly with 24. There more than luck about it.

8. How can we be the only club with sub standard facilities and split administration yet GC and GWS have state of the art.

i really had some hope after Roos/Jackson but it was a fraud. The place is a house of cards. You can take losing but you need some hope and joy. Even when we were seriously bad we had Flower; Jako; Farmer; Jurrah. Now it just sterile boring football. One goal for a half is unwatchable.

I like the fact you appear angry. We often forget that people are getting paid good money to make these decisions that seem odd to many hard core footy supporters. I just do not accept we have talented people in position of power in both the footy and administration departments. And yet they have their supporters here. Only this week someone here told me I should be concentrating on supporting the team today and not making comment about our lack of a training facility. As if I/we are not capable of doing both things at once..

Yep. I agree. There were steps last year where we fought against adversity. The win in Perth, where no one really thought we’d win, the first of the finals where majority of the public thought the experience of Geelong playing in multiple finals campaigns would knock us off.

No doubt this year has reared its ugly head but let’s see if that flakiness has more to do with personnel rather than history of our culture.

This year is a total disconnect to last year, I would love to find out why. It certainly goes deeper than we are being told imo...

YOU CAN'T BLAME INJURIES

Can't you.

Melksham, May , Lever,  Hibberd,  AVB, Jetta, Salem and Hannan in for starters and Cameron, Davis, Kelly, Coniglio, Haynes and Whitfield out and who wins?

Of course you can blame injuries.

We had a bunch of VFL players in against a full strength Giants team and you expect them to win.

I don't know how the hell we got within 25 points at the end.

PS> As usual our skill was pathetic, but also not helped by VFL players making up half the team.

Impossible to explain the inexplicable DZ.

See Nasher's post above for the obvious answer that most were calling for pre-match.

This is one VERY poor call and the one that tells me Goody just ain't getting it.

There are so many coaches that would be better for this club and this list right now ...here's just one example if he could be bothered (yeh yeh he's washed up and probably past it but couldn't be worse than Goody at selection and game day!)...

I know we did not go inside 50 too much early on but big Preuss would have provided a target today as well as a much needed physical presence. It was a no brainer. Spargo is the worst small man I have seen at MFC since a young Beams was selected in the 2000 Final.

How many goals did Preuss get at Casey today - or Marks inside 50?

I'll wait.

This was from his presser:

"We've got some things that we've got to work on and get better at, but we are getting better as a club. I feel we are, but we're disappointed with the loss.

"We could've turned it up today, but we stuck at it."

Goody said we are getting better!!!!! Mmmmmm what rose coloured glasses does he have cause I want some

What struck me is that is exactly what I imagined he would say. Much like Shorten, it all sounds pre planned.

Just finished watching and the disparity in effort was marginal, but the disparity in skills has never been wider. GWS were near perfect for 3 quarters and we weren’t even playing the same sport.

Appeared to be reading from notes when made that comment...!!

Also note Jordan Lewis named best on (at least first best in the thread summary), Weids and JKH also named

I sense 5+ changes

Do you think that means he would have played exactly like he did at Casey as he would have in the Giants match. Do you think the game would have played out exactly as it did at Casey, Do you think he would have played the same role as at Casey. Wow. Beyond that I do not understand your support of Spargo.

1. If you were coaching against us, you would tell the backs Demon mids will kick it it up and under into the forward zone. Other than Salem no one kicks it other than directly in front of themselves. By that I mean that if you look at the set of the shoulders this actually allows you to read where they are going to aim, again up and under. This allows time to defend as 50% of the time it will be right on the top of the head of the forward. So it will always look as if they are kicking to a contest, or a 3 on one. But it is because we are slower in the forward 50 this year.

2. That brings the issue of leading. Jaydon Hunt is the only one who can lead faster than his opponent. Tom Mac looks like he couldnt beat a cow coming in to be milked. We miss Melksham.

So what are mids told to do?

3. Im not sure but the ones who kick it up and under are also the ones who kick around the corner as they have no skill (or confidence) to kick it low and hard. Viney, Harmes Salem and Brayshaw will handball first as they will try to nail it. Jones Stretch and Petracca will not. Now Clarry has joined the latter group too.

You wouldnt be able to get away with this slack behaviour at Hawthorn or Collingwood.

YEP I and many others said it Thursday Night PRUESS had to be picked ... Relieve Max and provide forward option.

NO BRAINER! But MFC NO IDEA!!

As for Spargo I could run faster and Im struggling to get past a jog some days!

Don't worry, Pert is watching closely.

He said a month ago he goes to training and he is attending football meetings to get a feel for personalities and the dynamics of the group.  Even allowing for injuries, the last month would confirm to him what needs to be done.

Pert may or may not call for a review but I would be shocked if there wasn't 1) a restructure of the football department and 2) changes in assistant coaches.

I have confidence in Pert, Mahoney and Goodwin but as I've often said our structure is flawed and this year has shown up the inexperience and weaknesses of Goodwin's team.

Like Hardwick and Buckley, Goodwin will be better with a better group of assistants.

Preuss should just stand 20m out directly in front and wait for the aimless bombs into the forward line

We kicked it there like 5 times when there was no demon in sight!

When Watts was leaving he went in his last year from forward to half back. So did Howe. Frawley went from full back to forward pocket.

Ok Brayshaw is now on a wing and looking pretty [censored] unhappy with that change.

I doubt that’s what we sold Preuss who could easily get a game elsewhere.

It doesn’t matter who we traded for him. If we didn’t intend to at least give him a go, we should have traded Tyson for something we desperately needed like maybe a small forward or some speed. Or a draft pick from North to package up.

I just don’t understand why absolute spuds keep getting games but a guy we went out and got in a busy trade period last year is playing VFL. At least try him out. See if we can play 2 rucks. Christ it can’t be worse than the current situation where Max gets bruised every week and nobody in our forwardline can take a mark.

If we had have traded for a different type of player or used a draft pick then we wouldn’t have another ruckman on the list. We rolled the dice massively last year with only Max on the list and got away with it. Imagine if last year, if Max had gone down instead of Lever? We’d have been trying to launch a finals campaign with TMac and Weideman as our ruckmen. Going in to this year where we were hoping for another finals campaign - with no backup for Max, you’re one loss away from season derailment, and that’s a completely unacceptable risk. Obviously at the time we weren’t to know the season would be derailed anyway.

If you take it as a given then that we needed another ruck - then why *wouldn’t* we take arguably the best ruckman available? It was just a gift really. The alternative was some 18 year old unknown quantity.

As to why Preuss would have wanted to come here when he knew he’d be behind Max, I was stumped at the time and am none the wiser now. I doubt they promised him that he’d play all the time though, because you quite clearly can’t promise that.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

    The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
