Topic said changes, so i'll stick to that.

Structural

1) Switch Angus back to middle. Yes I know the Jonesy on a wing didn't work, but losing Angus from the wing hasn't either. And we finally have some run out there - even if both Stretch and Baker are error prone, both work their butt off.

2) Send Jonesy to half-back. We have a plethora of left foot defenders going down the left wing all the time. Is it a crime to go down the right side on occasions? Can't any of our forwards catch a ball when they lead left? By the way I thought Jonesy was exceptional in the first half against Eagles, but tired and was ineffective when it counted after half time. We have to find a spot for him to play on next year and defence is the only option left.

3) Make Preuss a late inclusion. Gawn was a superstar for three quarters and we had great run up the middle with Tim Smith leading up well and giving it off, but when Gawny tired in last quarter against Hickey and Vardy, it hurt us. Mummy will be told to work Gawny over, so it would be nice if we had back up and Preuss is a player who can work Mummy over as well. Bringing him in late will upset their balance and force a rethink.

4) Play Lewis as a forward. We can't have Jordy, Jonesy, O.Mac and Petty all in our back seven (we become way too slow), but Jordy has the smarts to at least position himself well in the forward line. He is still a dead-eye accurate kick as well.

5) Back in the attack down the spine method. With five first choice defenders still out, we are going to be exposed if we try and chip it around, but how good was the manic handball run and carry of the second term against Eagles. Until we get Lever, May, Hibberd and Jetta back, it's  better to go down fighting than playing a precision brand that can be intercepted anyway.

6) Back in Stretch and Baker. Yep I did see their errors, but at what point on Friday night did anyone think we were slow and not quick to man up - could it have had anything to do with having two team oriented runners on the wing sharing the role with Angus. Even when Fritter let Ryan run into the pocket it was because he decided that with so many bigs already back there, he should zone off the lead options. It backfired, but hey we lost it because of our errant shots earlier in the night. Baker deserves another shot and Billy deserves a fairly long extended crack at it. Don't judge their  games by possessions. Judge it more by their run and pressure. 

7) Play Petty again. The move to having a big backline in Perth was not the disaster many of us expected, although I suspect it would have been if it was greasy conditions. The Giants have plenty of talls up forward with Cameron, Himmelberg and Finlayson, so there's a role for Petty again before Lever comes back in.     

Out: Obviously our concussion boys are all in doubt, but I suspect one of them at least will play. If only one of them is out, then it would be hard not to argue for Fritter to go back to VFL. He's a talent but watch the last term replay and tell me he didn't panic twice under pressure. He needs to go back to VFL and play in the middle and learn to cop contact and hold onto the ball in a tackle.

We played our best game for the year by playing our fastest team available. It backfired on WCE double teaming Max, who beat both of them. Max has been picked on for years and he thrives on it. We need to have more skilled pace on the ground and fewer slow plodders. Baker was not ready yet but his pace helped and made us more of a threat. I doubt that we will need or want to play Pruss in the same team as Max we need to be as flexible and mobile as possible to be competitive.

Agree we played our best game against the umps favourites but I still think we are a better team with him in it. 

Why did we bother getting Preuss if we are not going to play him. 

Him and maxy  could be an awesome and dangerous combo if given game time together.

I'd take ANB over Maynard every day. Maynard will be delisted at year end, too one-trick and slow. Brayshaw rotates through mids and does plenty of clearances, but will eventually return to full-time mid duties. Put it this way, it's either Brayshaw or Jones on a wing at the moment, and Brayshaw is less of a problem there than Jones. Finally, Fritsch should be further up the ground, sure but a) we have no-one else to cover for most of the backline being out injured and b) his defensive side needs work, so what better way of developing it. Presumably when Hibberd, Lever, May come back, Fritsch will find himself in a more "natural" position.

Agree with this. There is no point playing Gus on the wing. He's either in the middle or we trade him to acquire a mid who can play wing & inside when required. But we need to shift player/s around to accommodate for more midfield time. Oliver & Viney can play more forward time, Jones more defence or forward. Harmes & Brayshaw seem more suited to midfield predominantly.

I think Salem might be ok to go. Other two with knocks look set to miss. Most posters on here have summed up Billy really well so his omission is no surprise.

Corey was solid for Casey, and Sparrow has been doing what's been asked of him at Casey. Given our horrendous injury list they are the next names ready to be called. Preuss doesn't require explanation, get him in.

Agree mostly Deespicable

But would swap 2 and 4, Lewis is the back and his "General" presence can't be underestimated. Jones as a forward, doing inside work and tackling as well as finishing is of value

The most competitive team we have had this year does not have Lewis in it. He is too slow and this game proved it. We just can't carry too much lack of speed in this team. Jones and Hibberd have slowed down, OMac is slow but can work as a tall defender. Lewis may get another go if needed but I would be as happy if he moved to an off-field role and gave us another chance of picking up some outside run in the mid-season draft. It will be hard to be competitive with Jones, Lewis, Hibberd, and OMac in the same backline. Lewis does have to be behind the ball because he is too slow to be a creative forward.

Preuss is depth and may be played with Max against Carlton. They both play the same position and Max is better at it. Preuss is mainly depth and a desperate with injuries pick only. Preuss needs to kick a couple of bagfuls of goals as a forward at Casey while keeping his ruck skills in good shape, to get a run with Max.

Preuss can also play forward after playing 2 good consistent games of  football for Casey. He is cherry ripe to go. 

J Lewis for experience for now if he is right with his ankle until some of our better players come back.  Definitely in his twilight.            Help experience needed.

So 2 changes Preuss and Lewis for Tim Smith and possibly ANB ?

What part of the game gave you the idea that Gawn needs help? Experience only is important if he gets his hands on the ball and can lay a tackle, something Lewis has not done a good job of this year. He was very important last year but he will not have to be embarrassed out there too much this year to hang up his boots. You seem keen to win a fight rather than a footy game?

Having sat through up close the horrific GWS-Carlton game, I can say there are a couple of things to be sure of in team selection.

Whitfield can never be left alone. I have never seen someone be so effective at knowing where to be to give teammates an option or to just be in the right spot when the opposition stuffs up. Our vulnerability to the fast counterattack is like providing a swimming pool full of children to a Whitfield-shaped shark. He just can't even be left alone.

Similarly, though Heath Shaw isn't the Supercoach machine of the past, he is still a potent rebounder and has easily the most running bounces in the game. Put a forward on him to really lock him down and hope for the occasional lucky turnover, otherwise just accept this is an effective way to 'spend' the effort of a young player

Also shockingly, horribly visible was that Carlton were allowing GWS to swap the ball around, switch play, take their time, wait until the disorganised and depleted Carlton defence got out of position and a hole opened up. Six GWS players had more than 10 marks (18 for Whitfield) on their way to 154 total, just mind-boggling. This actually speaks in favour of keeping that 'press' going a bit, not giving them quite so much time to wait and see, maybe forcing a few errors. If they are given time, they can find one of their top users/runners in just a little space and CRACK they gain a clean 70m and your whole team is out of position. Better to hunt them than wait to be picked off.

Fact is, the final scores greatly flattered Carlton, as Carlton supporters around me fully acknowledged with deep sighs. If GWS had kicked better at goal (including three out-on-full or falling short just int he last quarter) and kept their foot on the pedal, it really would have been 186+ territory.

This is hard to reconcile with the GWS of the previous week, struggling to kick a meaningful score. But the main thing I'd argue is that Carlton let GWS feel comfortable and play at their own pace and make their own choices, while Hawthorn got up in their faces and forced them to move without getting all nicely set up.

We should expect to have a burst or two of rapid scoring against us, any time our pressure efforts drop off. But we should also expect to gradually grind ahead any time we do have the psychological initiative - they are far from invincible.

Ont he bright side, Carlton somehow managed to kick 7 goals despite only having a grand total of 4 marks inside 50 and most of their 35 entries being true rubbish. Harry McKay kicked 3 of them, suggesting that GWS don't quite have a gorilla-keeper on hand. So Preuss might be a worthwhile addition.

So, my ins would be Preuss and whoever the hell we think can stay with Whitfield, and anyone prepared to work hard all day on pressure, even if they aren't super-brilliant once they have the ball in hand.

Well if you follow the footy You would know that Mummy is not a clean player read about his history.However he put his knees into Murphy broke his ribs totally unnecessary today  against Carlton. he is in hospital Did you just wake up. Read your  facts. Keep up to date.

Actually, for the last 3 seasons, Kent has been playing fairly regularly, though a lot of that time was spent bouncing between AFL and VFL. He managed 20 AFL games in 2016,  the only recent year where he didn't have his season ended prematurely through a serious shoulder injury - not to mention "a club suspension for breaching club rules on alcohol protocols".

He also managed 13 and 15 AFL matches in 2013 and 2014, alongside matches in the VFL.

Given Friday was Gawns best game of the year and if Mumford is rubbed our he will get a full game at a NEAFL ruckman this week I don't see why we'd stress about bringing Pruess in for Smith. Of course if concussion forces him out there's not much we can do about it. But idk if it's just me but Smith doesn't seem to be getting the credit he deserves for his job on McGovern. There's no coincidence half McGovern's touches came in the last qtr when Smith was concussed.

 Fritsch probably needs to be dropped after one too many poor games this year and/or that serious lack or effort in trying to go with Liam Ryan in the lead up to that screamer.

I wonder if his omission from the prelim last year has rocked his confidence. He was good player last year. He isn't this year.
