I reckon he is way off, and his game on Saturday night was despicable, it was full of fumbles, looked slow lacked care and had no purpose in his game. 

It seems though he is playing slightly different position, he has had less inside the square time than the other mids.. why would this be the case, why would a bloke who had a career year in the guys, be forced out of his domain. Its curious, could it be because we are trying to find a spot for Jones? it seems weird.

one thing i do know a fumbly footballer is a liability and a player who is lacking confidence. Didnt think i would say that about Angus.

Just heard on SEN, Melksham is in a moon boot and on crutches today.

Not much else was said except Lewis looks likely to play this week.

Are you saying he is way off overall or just on the weekend? He might have had an off night but I think he's been one of very few who has performed consistently this season along with Salem and Oliver.

He's not the cleanest player but he wins so much of the football in close and I think his kicking on both sides has continued to improve. As one commentator noted he's not wheeling around to his preferred side as much (as Viney always does) he is kicking in stride and I've been impressed with some of his left foot kicking under pressure.

He's been playing on the wing and in the middle I'd imagine swapping with Jones. Pretty sure he did the same thing last year. 

Gus is in our best 5 players IMO. Yes he can appear slow and maybe a bit lathargic at times, its just how he moves and his body language I think. But he has terrific spacial awareness and one of those players who always has time. The game has already slowed down for him which is something that hasn't quite happened yet for Clayton who often rushes with his disposal. I think Gus is in the mold of a Pendlebry type. Not super fast or flashy but has the spatial awareness to make the right decisions often. He always keeps himself in every contest with his persistence and hunger.

I hate to be that guy but the kid is 23. Is he perhaps down on confidence with ball in hand playing in a side that is struggling at the moment? sure..... But he's not way off.

All fair points YB, i think he has had a so so year to be honest,  his Centre Clearance attendances are down, so its different than last year.

Its just my opinion, he had a great year but he has regressed and Pendlebury doesn't fumble.

Preuss in for Keilty who contributes nothing, Smith in for Melksham if he misses, which I think he will (short turnaround). Hunt to the backline to make up back 6 of Frost, O'Mac, Wagner, Hore & Salem. Hunt will need to play on Liam Ryan. Lewis in same boat as Melksham, may miss a week due to short turnaround. Unfortuntley noone good enough to take O'Mac's spot, who to me is the worse AFL footballer I have seen play the game.

A bit harsh.

Agree with your hunch that he had less mid time to make room for Jones who seems rather limited elsewhere.

iirc Gus played wing for a few weeks when he first came back into the side in 2018 and struggled.  Was then moved to the middle (I think Tyson made way and Viney was injured) and excelled for the rest of the year and started collecting Brownlow votes regularly.

Goodwin is experimenting with player positions, perhaps forced upon him due to the amount of injuries and lack of player flexibility.  Perhaps that is all there is to putting him on the wing.  But if last year showed Gus does his best work in the middle.  Hopefully, he is back there asap!

I don't really know, but I have heard that the reason Brayshaw was 'pushed' out to the wing was because of his defensive game. Going to the wing not only teaches him, but forces him to be accountable, both ways. I notice that Stretch recorded the highest total distance covered at high speed & the highest average speed in defence, so Angus will have to work harder that's for sure & maybe this is one of Goodwins focuses for Gus?

A lot of posters have been critical of some players, however, it appears that Goodwin has 'wiped the slate clean' & addressed the defensive game-plan/issues first before going down any other path. IMO its working.......I think Jones has been a little more accountable although still chasing possessions.....his contested possessions have increased & his turnovers decreased somewhat, which is a positive sign.

Consequently with a larger emphasis of defence we've seen a 'deficiency in our skills & attacking moments but this will only improve IMO.

Angus not on his own being fumbly & he has plenty of mates.

I agree with this,  and early season both Oli and Gus were terribly wasteful out of the centre, with the ball forward.

I reckon,  he has to be more careful with his kicks into F50,  so being on the Wing allows him less of an excuse for having no time,  or space,  to Use the ball well. Its a development strategy IMO.

And allows Jones to go inside.   Since that time, we have been improving as a team.  The difference between idealism and practicalities I think.

Hunt was 'wishful'  down back imv,  and has shone, up forward.  His natural instinctive position.  Practical over idealistic.?

Same with TMc,  2 years ago, the move out of defence has saved his career with us.   In defence back then, he was sloppy.  He has improved hand over fist in that time, and has now more confidence IMO, in his field kicking, than he did years back.

 

Fritta, in the past couple of years,  imv  has been learning the game in the seniors...  and playing back at times,  to learn,  while his agility and skills help us to get on the positive side of the ledger. He doesn't have a 'Spot' yet,  because he's learning many positions.   On a needs basis.

I think when he grows physically stronger,  he will eventually find a preferred position.

Collins also proves that there are players out there far and wide playing good footy at VFL SANFL level. Picking someone like him saves us giving up a first rounder for May also.

I am also not saving giving up 6 was a mistake (willing to give May time), but more so saying that there are big defenders out there that  are capable of stepping straight into our senior and playing an important role. Bit like Marty Hore who is already is our best intercept defender and someone who looks like he's played 100 games already.

There are some on here that think Marty Hore is just making up the numbers. Amazing really.

Look i must admit i will put my hand up and say after i watched his Box Hill game on live tv i thought he was quite ordinary. He just kept butchering the footy. 

I did like his game against Collingwood in the practice game and also against Richmond also. His game against Brisbane and Port were so so..

But ever since he had come back into the side he has been our best defender along with frosty. He has one thing we have missed since Jared Rivers and thats his intercept marking ability and courage going back with the flight. I reckon he is a beauty and wont be ever surprised if his career pans out the same way as Tom Stewart from Geelong.

Think he just needed to get used to the higher level, and since he's still only played a handful of games, writing him off especially after the past few weeks is ridiculous.

Just hope that when Lever comes back he can step in Hibberds role and move the ball a bit further up the field. Hore plays in a similar manner to Lever so hopefully he won't go into his shell when Lever comes back, but maybe the silver lining to Hibbo's injury is that we might see a more expansive Hore. I reckon he'll be right moving (regularly) beyond the back half.
