Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Steven May - drinking session

Connor Rozee would be handy about now.

May is damaged goods, has a Mitch Clark smell-esque going on.

I tend to agree unfortunately.  I have a feeling this might end badly for us.

The words of an old boss of mine keep ringing in my ears: "nobody ever gets caught first time".

I can't stand Barrett but I'm closer to his opinion than the opposite.

If it had been Joel Smith having the beer, not May, this story and thread wouldn't exist.

That this is a ‘breaking story’ is the stuff of Working Dog’s Frontline television series. It seems pretty clear it was not actually ‘a big drinking session’ as claimed by Tom Morris on OTC.

I reckon Steven May will turn out to be a bloody good player for us. And this is not a big deal, albeit it is an issue that the club seems not to have not handled particularly well.

It all points to a quiet news day in Melbourne on Monday.

Barrett: Demons' stance on May is control gone mad

I don't fully agree with Purple, but I have some sympathy for his view.  I'm probably somewhere in the middle.

I have a feeling Barrett could have easily written this story the opposite way depending on which way the wind was blowing.

The culture in Australia is messed up beyond belief.

The person taking a picture of someone having a beer knowing it will cause a stir.

The media reporting it from a sensationalist angle.

A good portion of the public getting up in arms.

The football club forced to tsk tsk due to public perceptions.

The (sensationalist) media personality then pointing the finger at club for nanny-state like behaviour.

I'm not in Australia so I half don't give a [censored]. But it hurts seeing what has happened to my homeland.

Here's a decent call to arms from Kerry O'Brien, upon his resignation from the ABC, be it for the left or right.

From 2011, since proven to be so very prescient! See:

2011 really needed to be underlined

It's only a story because of our poor start to the year.

If we were sitting comfortably in the 8 it would have barely had a mention.

The microscope is on the club with the media and supporters looking for reasons/excuses for the slide...

Nah....more the fact he came to the club fat & not fit enough to play AFL.  Put a target on his own back then was foolish enough to think he wouldn't be spotted drinking in a downtown bar.  Still a dog act by Tom but that's the way things roll in the big smoke.

Me Leadership Lewis said that all players will have a drink during rehab.

What a croc this is.

Looking forward to the day when ‘new research’ discovers the positive effects of alcohol during rehab.

Seriously, so many are obsessed with the icing (drinking rehab) rather than the cake (soft tissue injuries don’t go back on when the game is done).

It’s a story because we are paying 750K a year and gave up our leading goal scorer forward for a player who has been injured twice, suspended once, turned up unfit and is yet to play a full game for us.

What? Did we trade Tom McDonald when I wasn't looking.

The myths around Hogan are giving me the shlts!

Hogan never kicked 50 goals in a season.

Hogan has not been our top goal scorer over the last two seasons.

Hogan has kicked less this season than Jayden Hunt!

Oh and if you think he is up the ground doing more then,

Less metres gained than Hunt

Less tackles than Hunt

Worse disposal efficiency than Hunt

Less contested possessions than Hunt

Lower Supercoach score than Hunt

Why did I compare Hogan to Hunt? Because he is our whipping boy but apparently Hogan is a superstar.

Get over Hogan, he is gone.

And there lies the main issue rjay ... we didn't turn up for game 1.

We might salvage the year with 8 - 10 wins but we've blown a great opportunity to build from last year with another finals appearance.  Every team gets injuries and our injury count isn't that bad either.  Players and FD are accountable and unless we play finals,  we've failed.

So focusing in on innocuous incidents might satisfy some but it doesn't turn my focus away from how our club rested on its laurels and thought it was all going to happen as a matter of course.

As always,  it's about the bigger picture.  And if we get to 10 wins then what?  Satisfied again?

May turned up unfit. The club was not happy and justifiably so. This was poor form, and unprofessional.

Since then:

- May trained well, he seemed to integrate well with the players, and he got fit;

- he got suspended for a hit during a pre-season game, which was at best a line ball suspension, and which ruled him out for the first game of the season - Bernie Vince (a club favourite) and Jordan Lewis (a leader in the club) have done much worse during the actual season, and far more regularly - in any event, we need May’s hardness in defence, so while disappointing, it was hardly a hangable offence;

- he then did his hammy - there is little evidence to suggest that this was related to the condition at which he arrived at the club as he got fit - if anything it’s probably Misson’s fault;

- he then seems to have had a few beers at the pub last Sunday afternoon - which Paul Roos expressly asked Tom Morris on OTC, “was this just one or two beers?”, to which Tom Morris replied “no, it was a drinking session” - seems like a sensationalist non-story to me, and yet it’s triggered this - hook, line and sinker.

Some of you seem intent on putting the boot into our players whenever there’s a sniff of an opportunity to do so.

Anyway - I’m looking forward to seeing a fit May back in the team. I think he’ll add a lot. I reckon we should be getting around him, not falling for this sensationalist carp.

And, fair dinkum, some of the nanny state attitudes here wouldn’t be out of place in Iran.

Of course.... A dog act is a dog act regardless of how you dress it.

Look, Tom has a job to do...

I'm not a fan of how the media go about things a lot of the time either but he was presented with a story and it has currency because of our form line and May's less than successful start at the club...part of a joining the dots exercise.

I probably wouldn't have written the story but I suspect I wouldn't have a job in the media for very long.

...but the dog act was done by the person who took the photo and sent it on to the media.

It wasn't their business and May wasn't hurting them in anyway.

That's a pretty lousy thing to do I reckon but unfortunately there are a lot of lousy people in this world who can't mind there own business.

They mustn't have much going on in their lives or their heads for that matter...

Barrett writes:

  • "In the club's eyes, May drinking at a Richmond bar was a bad look given his poor start to life as a Demon after eight years with Gold Coast".

I found where Mahoney said the first part but not the second part. 'Poetic' licence by Barrett?

  • "I didn’t view it that way. In my eyes, the Demons' stance on May is control gone mad".   The bad look in my eyes was a football club telling an employee that he can't have a legal and responsible outlet to his clearly stressful life

I can't find anywhere where the club said that to May or any other player.  Is that 2+2+x=55!

According to Mahoney:

“Our overall approach is we treat our players like adults and the only question we ask them if they’re doing everything possible to maximise their abilities and be the best versions of themselves...“We don’t set a lot of rules because we think bad clubs and bad organisations set a lot of rules, so we just go about asking those questions and trusting our players.”

What did the club do/say that was controlling?

As Goodwin said:  the issue 'had been blown out of proportion'.  imv that applies to Barrett's angle that mfc's stance is 'control gone mad'.  Good click bait but not a lot of substance.

The dog act was also Morris calling it a “Drinking Session” and not bothering to find out the reasons WHY he might be there

so i don’t think he did his job at all, really.

But it is the way of much modern journalism, to not leave the computer ? before it is sent...

Journalistic license is used constantly ... by the way, I never did find a direct quote from Goodwin saying that we will play 'Fearless Football' (or we want to play fearless football)

There's a big difference in endeavouring to do something and saying you will do something (e.g. Neeld "We will be the hardest team to play against")

Same for the May story ... apparently 2 or 3 beers is now a 'session.'  (According to Morris) Back in my day 2 or 3 beers was a mere appetiser!

And then there are the conflicting stories about whether a player is allowed to drink or not in terms of playing capacity or in rehab.  And how much alcohol is acceptable? Is it a .05 ruling?

All over the top to my way of thinking ... just let lads be lads and if they do transgress,  penalise them.  May hasn't transgressed so it should be the end of a non story.

And most importantly,  the FD and the players need to find a winning formula ...1 win against Hawthorn hasn't convinced me that we are back on track.  If we can find a way to be 5 & 7 or 6 & 6 by the time the bye comes around I might be swayed.

The MFC are ducking and weaving in the May saga, trying to appear golden, by putting on teflon.

1. How was their due diligence with May, seeing that they off-loaded Hogan and beat their chest privately to journos when Hogan got stuck in a pub earlier in the year.

2. May apparently presented underdone.  First, the club leaked it; and then tried to imply that Gold Coast's standards were the issue.

3. The medical/football decision to put him back on the park when the game was lost, has done more to impact his fitness than any holiday he may have had in summer.  Fact.

4. The club and footy-land are tut-tutting his few beers.  Jordan Lewis admitted most players (including he) drinks when in rehab!

To me, the club stinks more than Steven May at the minute.  The leaking...the mis-management...and blame-shifting.  Reminds me back to the days when Scully was scolded for 'over-training' while at the MFC.

I am glad the Barrett and a few others can smell the rat.

The veil of negativity and amateur-hour has returned to the club.  They can feel it hovering, but don't want to look up.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
