Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

perhaps Steven could point me to his pub of choice as I am up there tomorrow til sunday morn.

just on that - he is an adult and he can choose to make his own adult decisions, including, should I and should I not have a bevvy given i am in rehab and given what the team rules are.

all clubs take a view that it is up to the individual when they are outside of the club, to pursue what they want in relation to getting the best out of themselves...and the will make the player accountable accordingly...

If Jeffy is out for a week or two , Id like to see Oliver tried in the forward pocket  for a qtr or so with Pruess or Gawn at Full forward.

Someone said he is getting less game time because of fitness, if correct he is still fantastic at roving packs and it would make him go for his shots more if he is closer to goal. Pruess with Clarry and Hunt in pockets could be workable.

Or even the other way, as well... Damo.

To play him as a halfback flanker some times... so he can focus on his defensive side of the game, learning those skills...  and from that,  learning to be more considered with his dispoasls to team-mates,  up the field ?

As Robbie Flower did when he went to half back.

I don't quite understand this reverence for Keilty's game.  Is it because he was a first gamer ?  Because his Brother posts here ?  I'm scratching my head.

He had 6 disposals, 2 marks, 3 hitouts and no goals.  If Weideman puts up those numbers he's pilloried left, right and centre.

I watched the game again and I was wrong about Declan Keilty. It wasnt a good game and I noticed him more because he is new and caught my eye. There were a few passages where he jogged around the contest which was mainly torrid. Anyway on 2nd glance, it wasnt  very impressive. His gather and kick out of the center was good but that was nearly it.

Tim Smith for Keilty if Smith's available?

From a purely output point of view, Smith's game against Richmond was better than Keilty's game against Hawthorn, and they played the exact same role (key forward/second ruck).

They may also bring Weideman in for Keilty if they feel 1 VFL game is enough.

Good post with a number of good points.

On where he is at I'd add to the point about his young age for a kpd, he like his brother and others had post season surgery and an interrupted pre season.

As you say when not playing well ite seems to be a beacon for crtisism. But even when playing well some, including commentators, only seem to note his mistakes. I agree with the crtisisms of him not moving towards the ball twice in rhe last quarter and being outmarked as a result. But to suggest he nearly cost us the game is ridiculous.

What nearly cost us that game - one we should have won by 5 goals - was our appalling handball and kicking skills all game. But particularly in rhe first half. Hore, Fritter, Lewis , gawn and Oliver made multiple howlers that cost both goals and chances at goal. It was a joke. Capped off by traccs shot on goal

Jeffy for all his improved work cost us a sure goal with his selfishness (though it was great that he made up for that later) and don't get me started about harmed and his two identical  50s.

Omac did not miss a target by hand or foot. 100% de in a team that at half time was going at a woeful 52%. And before anyone says that his kicks were all easy crosses remember several were high risk 40 metre arrows that picked out teammates and set up forward attacks (besides half our team can't make those easy 30 metre crosses).

Another positive is that he took a couple of good contested marks (the second one at an important time), something he rightly has been knocked for for not doing.

So all in all an improved game from omac. But i'm sure, with petty among our best in the vfl that if goody thinks omac is the liability some think he is then he will drop him. We'll see Thursday night.

Nice to see  a couple of fairly logical posts about O-Mac's good points for a change.

I also share your view that his kicking skills are elite - they always have been. But I have real doubts about the physical side of his game - his intensity when he gets the ball in pressure situations is poor and he rarely shrugs a tackle or even baulks an opponent like his brother enjoys doing. His lack of strength means he has limited intimidation factor and he does not have the pace to keep up with an opponent on a lead or to make ground quickly enough for a key intercept. He has quite a good tank like his brother, but he lacks good leg speed. He is a nice safe kick (probably in our top five percent in this area) but he does not thump 65m low flat line-breaking kicks down the line that his predecessor Lynden Dunn did and certainly he does not have Dunny's booming deep voice that quickly won him plaudits as a leader at the Pies, even though our own coach didn't rate this when discarding him. I hope I am wrong and I hope Oscar is tried for a while as a forward before his contract next year runs out, but at this point in time, I feel he is as likely to make it as Jimmy Toumpas. Skills only get you so far. And my worry now is that his brother Tom, who is a harder-working McDonald clan version with incredible aerial judgment and endurance fitness, has lost the necessary speed to recapture his 2018 form. I am very happy to write Tom off for this season as well, but in his case, I suspect a really good new fitness advisor plus a turf-toe free pre-season will get him back up on his toes and running with enough alacrity to make an impact again.

As to team for this week, if Preuss is fit, then he has to come in and if that's the case then one of Keilty or O-Mac should be left out.

If Viney is fit, then it may be time to send Fritter back for a refresher in dominating a game at VFL level - he was so impressive pre-season, but sometimes you just need a reminder of why you want to play AFL.

Hopefully Keilty gets another week. Didn't receive much of the footy whilst playing forward against the Hawks but that was just the flow of the game, he did a good job of crashing the pack and in the ruck and when he did receive the ball he didn't make any mistakes. I feel he can develop into a useful forward target, has a great pair of dukes.

I think Viney should have another week off. He has rushed it too many times before and a 3/4 fit Jack has performed badly in the past. Just my opinion.

No change or Preuss for Kielty if they decide to bring in the big boy

Agree but Keilty stays and Turbo goes out!! for Preussmeister!

Our forward ground ball gets were the best they’ve been against the Hawks with only two genuine talls up there.

I think it’s unlikely they’re playing Preuss and Keilty in the same side up forward due to this, however GC has 4 tall defenders (Murdoch, Joyce, Collins and Hombsch) so having Preuss in there as well may work.

If they go with that, then I’d say:

Ins: Preuss

Out: Fritsch

If they go in with 4 tall defenders, we should go small...

Agree - no one could doubt Jack's commitment BUT if we cannot win against GCS without him then it is well & truly 'goodnight season 2019'.

The boy Sparrow apparently went OK for Casey last weekend so give him some interstate exposure to accelrtate his development.

As for Keilty, admire his persistence but at this stage he is 'warming the bench' for Preuss or The Bull.

The St Kilda game suggests we will struggle against GC unless we improve. Last week was a slight improvement but it certainly wasn't a resounding win.

The sheer numerical nature of the injuries is impacting team balance and shows little sign of improving... one step forward.. one back eg Weideman, Preuss Tim Smith none can get a clear run before you even look at the 5 or 7 long term injuries.

This weeks VFL match at Windy Hill could have the lowest number of AFL players we have ever fielded.

I know he is tall but the highest point is usually rather high. I think you and others mean at his maximum reach. I know I am pedantic but surely we could use the language correctly and not repeat imported idioms like "from the get go"  - "early doors" - "fat side"..............

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
