Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Well even poor Garry cops a fair bit on here too. I think sometimes we do forget he was a Melbourne great who spent 8 years captaining this club.

I do alao understand thats his role now days in the media is to critique the club if its there.

That forward line in 1994 with Lyon Jakovich Neitz Sean Charles and the Ox. How did we not win a flag?

Injuries.

Jakovich retired in like round 15. Lyon hurt his hamstring in round 6 vs North and missed like 6 games. Charles had a host of personal issues and also missed large chunks. Neitz was a backman at this stage and rarely went forward. Ox was outstanding.

The problem was that we just seemed to get injuries whenever we would get on a run. And they would always be injuries to key players. Tingay as well. Lovell. Lovett.

Come finals time we were peaking but much like last year, we faced a rampaging Eagles on their home turf, and we were burnt out after essentially playing 3 elimination finals (we needed to beat Sydney in round 24 to make finals).

It was a brutal season from an injuries perspective. If we could have kept Jako, Charles, Lyon, Lovell, Lovett, Tingay on the field together for long periods we would have finished higher and perhaps have at least snagged a GF berth. Alas, like 1998, it just wasn't to be.

I recall going to a training session the year after at the Junction and speaking to a trainer about our prospects in 95.  He said they (I assume he meant the club) felt 94 was the one that got away.

A pure natural footballer and leader. He was a ball player and a ball magnet. His skill and poise over the ball were only bettered by the great Robbie. It will always be his kicking that stands out most in my memory. Absolute gun of the highest order.

Im a big fan and he was the player that i first really loved. He was a bloody great natural footballer. watching those clips i realized he would be the exact player we need right now. He was so good on the ground and on his non proffered foot  the left. In actual fact he is a 5 time All Australia the first 2 were not called All Australian sides.. but is registered as a 5 time All Aus, one as a CHB and the rest as a forward so that indicates what versatile player he was. He also won the equivalent of the NAB rising star in 1986.

He cops a lot on here and from Demon supporters, and im not saying its right or wrong but when you talk about him on the field, i hope he gets the respect he deserves and i would hope one day he enters the AFL hall of Fame because some of the players in there are certainly not in his class.

The first year that I disregarded who won the GF. The reason? We were a better team culled by unexpected injuries.

Good memories in these clips, not only to remind us what a great player he was, but how good some of his team mates were as well.

On another note, it is so strange to see the concrete patch behind the goals at the city end of the MCG, the players rolling in the mud, the cigarette and alcohol advertising around the grounds, the tight shorts! It seems so long ago now and yet I remember those days well. Makes me feel old.

Confirmed to me by the brother of the Full Back at the time. He also said a chap who played for them wasn't called 'The Chemist' for nothing.

Exactly.  Also coached them when they had their well documented illicit drug culture that has ruined numerous lives.  And now coaches you know who.

All very interesting,  if not diabolical.

It almost makes a mockery of the whole 'war on drugs' scenario. It's a very serious and bad joke.

By the way, the brother of the ex Weagle also said the whole game is riddled with drug abuse: the Bombers were simply the only ones to get sprung.

Exquisite ball skills, perfect balance both sides, could play tall or shorter and in any position, a capable mark one-on-one, even netter mark when out of position (notice how many two grabbers), versatile, tough, courageous and a great leader. If not for injury would have been undoubtedly been forward of the 90s after Schwarz and Carey.

Magnificent promoter of the club and the game  and also a great analyser of the game. Not too good at picking coaches.

The video highlights are how he played all the time. Thanks for the reminder.

I knew someone who played with the Hawks, late 80's and 90's.

He loves joking around about that time...   and "the Elephant Juice"....   "the elephant Juice"

Martin Pike was also good in the second half of the year, kicked 4 in the Quali against Carlton, we then shipped him off at the end of the year because of his fondness for turning up at training smelling like duff man!

He's at the top of the list of players we shipped out only to win flag/s at other clubs.

Finding them out would have been prejudicial in those days; performance enhancement took many forms and Ben Cousins wore the blame and guilt - but he was a great, great footballer capable of almost anything - all assumed that he was fearless until it was too late.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
