Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I thought the kick outs were excellent last night

Lewis and Salem nailed some rippers

It was quite bizarre and I commented on this on the game day thread, there were a number of instances where we kicked out from a behind straight up the guts of the ground right into the hands of one of our own. And you’re thinking awesome how good was that...

...then immediately the player plays on and kicks perpendicular right out to the wing! inline with where the player had the ball all ready, so instead of just continuing down the corridor and taking one kick to get inside 50 in an extremely quick and efficient fashion, we are 2-3 kicks away from forward 50 and giving the opposition forever to get back and flood our forward 50

There are simple reasons why we can't connect going i50

- in the last two years we have let go (for good reason) most of our best field kicks to i50 in Watts and Hogan (when he played upfield) and to some extent Kent.  Complemented by Hannan and Fritsch we were getting enough qulaity delivery to offset the butchering and blind bombs from our midfielders.  By sheer weight of i50 numbers we scored often enough to win.

- Fritsch is no longer the link-up player we lauded him for (correctly) as the Watts replacement but he is now languishing in defence.

- When Hogan played fwd he would mark or bring the ball to ground (then sulk) giving us a chance at ground level.

Our problem was not letting players go.  It is the cumulative effect of all of them going/not being played in the fwd half without their skills being replaced.   So our i50 are now appalling in quantity and quality, our forwards aren't experienced enough against good defenders and there is no one to create a contest in the air.

Of course their are other i50 connect problems but I believe they start from the above.

Well put LH.  I was strong on Watts staying for the the two redeeming features he had....the best delivery man coming inside 50 in the AFL AND he was a very good finisher in front of goal.  Why you would give that up without having a solid replacement or two or grooming players that could do the job beggars belief

Goody may have thought overwhelming amounts of rubbish bombing inside 50 would get the chocolates as long as we locked it in there often enough.  Well other teams have unravelled that plan and we are now devoid of quality delivery.

Watts wasn't irreplaceable by any means, but once gone we needed to groom both Salem and Fritschkrieg to the wings.  Our two most accurate disposals by foot.

Instead we've had both of them playing mostly down back...unable to impact with kicks inside 50.  Nice work by the FD.  Let the carnage continue! ????

I keep asking why was the best KPF we had traded out for a lazy over weight Back man who cannot get on the field?

i doubt the fat man from the north wil get on the field this year.

Great recruiting there coach.

We asked Goodwin to make positional changes. He did.

We asked him to loosen the aggressive nature of our forward press. He did.

Two points alone worth repeating here. And those positional changes were half inspired. Indeed, I had the sense that Goodwin had been reading Demonland during the week. Didn't someone here raise the wacky notion of Hibberd or the like going to Dusty?

I've given grief to Richmond for being an ordinary team over the past few years, but they do a few things well, and they did them exceptionally well against us: keep knocking the the ball forward and again and again and keep up the pressure.

They were also super-sharp at handballing out of congestion. We tried. Goodwin tried. We were inferior on the night. This wasn't the same loss as in recent weeks. I agree with Max or whoever said we showed improvement, but as to an altered game-plan.

He might be better served as a half back, where he has a little more time to decide.  His panicky rubbish dish offs are embarrassing.  Getting knocked over by the work experience kid was also embarrassing.

Viney, Jones and Lewis. Only one of the three should be playing. Viney and Jones are untouchables as captains. Lewis is the only one that offers a skerrick of leadership and better ball use but slow and exposed at times. Two of these have to be dropped. Viney and Jones are momentum killers and aside from burying their heads in packs offer nothing.

I honestly can’t think of anyone who could:should be captain and that is pretty terrible

it’s beginning to feel like we need a rebuild and not just on field

Was at the game and just to punish myself watched the replay. To me the worst part of the performance was how many times we kicked blindly particularly to the middle of the ground giving the Tigers direct access to score. Also contrast our forward pressure to Richmond. How many times did Richmond set up and waltz out of the back line. For those who propose Garrlet as some out of answer your kidding yourself. There is no place in the game for someone who can’t apply forward pressure he need to go and now.

No

But to be fair our whole starting mids are if they are not winning the ball.

Our starting mids are slow (Viney, Harmes, Oliver & Brayshaw - even Gawn but we are not talking rucks)

They can win the ball but they can't chase or kick.... It's a massive problem

First post of the year. You can feel the raw disappointment of the supporters everywhere, it's real.

My observations align with many already have touched on - the players appear bereft of confidence in both each other and as the weeks go by, the gameplan. Although we were mildly successful last season, the signs were there. The game against Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval, astonishing number of inside 50s for little reward. Stkilda cutting us to ribbons at the G (scarily similar to last week). Anzac Eve, Queens Birthday. We looked exposed in those matches and people forgot because we beat a weak Geelong and an undermanned Hawthorn.

The fact is - we're a young side, with a hell of a lot of upside that probably overachieved in 2018. Getting rid of Hogan hurts us on field in the short term but was in my opinion the right call to make for the long term due to non- football related issues.

The player we miss the most is Vandenberg, his tackling pressure is inspirational and is deceivingly damaging with his disposal. He can't get fit quick enough.

Hang tough guys, some positives to come out of the season so far - Salem is leading the bluey by a mile. Stellar season so far from Christian we all love his poise at times when everybody else is panicking and missing targets. We have the pillars to build a team around, sadly most of them are coming into the year severely under done. Dip into the draft this year and grab forwards and outside runners. Go hard at high end free agents. We'll be right.

Salem the most consistent but made some poor choices as well last night.

Crows finished on top 2017 & lost the GF

2018 was a disaster with internal issues the cause resulting in finishing 12th

Bottom line is you need all facets of the club going right to continue success & it appears we once again have succumbed to them.

Players have clearly turned up in poor shape which is what Roos has eluded & along with extensive injury list has exposed the cracks.

The misery continues 55 years strong!

First the backline imploded.

Then the forward line collapsed.

Now the mids have joined them.

Omg Mfc.

Sorry but totally don’t agreee with this. Give his all and play an inside mid role. Has limit but liability is way over the top!

Thank Monde great post. At least now expectation is gone provides a massive opportunity to trial thing, experiment and draft to meet needs.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
