Our disposal is rubbish, we got away with it last year as our fwds were in form and we were able to lock it in our fwd line. This year it's coming straight back out, our midfielders won't chase and the zone defence is embarrassing.

But this issue runs deeper and is now on Goodwin's shoulders. He has continued to play an extremely aggressive zone defence that relies on everything going our way further up the field.

May and Lever would (hopefully) help strengthen the back six but if they're being told to press up and zone off the same way OMac, Frost and Hibberd are, then we're going to have the same problems.

I agree we are pedestrian in the speed department, generally have poor skills which get highlighted more in the wet and not a single forward that opposition backs would be concerned about kicking multiple goals 

 

From my own leadership perspective I can understand what SG is saying.

You don't necessarily want to say what you're doing is wrong and your players are slow or poor etc....

I just hope that they are making the hard decisions. All we can do is hope. But to be fair SG has on face value to now made a lot of good calls, so I am prepared to back him in.... Sadly that doesn't mean we will get better anytime soon in the short term

I personally thought it would lead to advantages for us because we generally win centre clearances with Gawn, Oliver, Viney & Brayshaw. A quick kick kick out of the centre and we have an open 1 on 1 forward line.

We are down on centre clearances this year which has ruined the 1 advantage we should have got.

Any advantage the opposition should have got against our brand of play has been multiplied by the absence of Lever and May.

I have been banging on about pace and disposal for the last 3 years and I don't believe we have done anything about it.

Interesting that our disposal is causing turnovers that are gifting goals to the opposition and we are now described by many as the slowest team in the AFL.

Added to a poor gameplan is it any wonder we are losing every week.

Sympathetic to your dilemma and difficult decision, PF. It has been a very painful trip this time around and one that has dominated the Club since '65. Many of us, I think, are reviewing our loyalties and our love of football. Then again, golf has its merits, as well.

I must credit Geelong with using their loss against us in the final as a huge wake up call. They reviewed, took no prisoners and worked hard in the off season to change their game plan, positioning and personal and now have a crack at another flag.

I actually thought it was the games against Sydney and St Kilda late in the season that exposed us. West Coast followed the blueprint. Our players all get drawn to the contest where it's difficult to get a meaningful disposal. Other teams just need to leave someone on the outside, more often than not it will come out and they're off. And if it doesn't come out, they can force a stoppage

Exactly right, so the question to be asked here is: 'Why have we as a club been unable to develop any semblance of basic football skills over the last 15 years?'

Unless the gameplan calls for handpassing to the teammate under the most pressure, preferably to his feet, OR kick it long to a contest with our smallest player, OR under no circumstances attempt to shepherd an opposition player, why can't we execute these things?

I think with May and Lever in the side, we can get away with Salem taking a Wing,  or inside Mid role. 

That releases one or more NQR , out of the team.  a net positive.

Club needs to start dealing in cold hard facts. The fact is we are the biggest rabble in the AFL. Stop wasting your time on bull [censored] feel good emails, and start looking at the team structure and game plan. Start looking at what new kids to draft in and who will coach our rebuild.

I have a question. Is it possible to restrict Demonland to paid up members? I'm not a fan of freeloaders.

We are No.1 in center clearances Wrecker.

We have improved 5 places on stoppage clearances from last year as well to be ranked 6th (from 11th place in 2018).

No.2 in contested possessions.

The engines doing fine..it's what is happening after we clear it.

Too many turnovers, smashed on the outside spread when we do (last in uncontested).  Stoppage set ups needing work to cover the Oops outlets more effectively and utilise our own better including who we play through there?

Bombing into the 50 far too often on top of players heads.  That is NOT chaos football.

Overly aggressive press crowding out our 50 making it way difficult to convert opportunities.

Lack of quality zippy smaller forwards to clean up / convert and provide occasional lead options into space on 45s.

Lack of to space for anyone to lead into in general due to the aggresseive press (overcrowding) issue.

Aggressive press and big turnover numbers resulting in quick sling shot transistion for Opp far too often, impacting scoreboard and effectiveness / confidence of defenders ie; the Opp converts more often than us as they are taking it into a more open funtional forward line vs our dysfunctional overly crowded one (effecting our conversion and turnover rate i50) even though our i50s are usually much higher than the Opp!  Also the way we bring it in to 50 and out of form Key Forwards probably not helping.

Delivery generally and skill levels right off the scale vs last year (Casey call ups not ready or up to AFL level) as a result of injuries etc.  Ranked last in Disposal Efficiency vs 14th last year and last in effective disposals vs 9th last year.

I hope Sg and the whole team sit down and watch Jimmy Bartels summary of where things are going wrong in Access all Areas. 

To be honest, never watch them and only did because I was interested in the highlights of McKay - oh how I wish Weideman was showing as much promise 

Anyway I think these guys nailed it 

As a collective team we simply allow opposition players too much space and basically hope somehow to win back possession and then get the easy possession on the turnover - teams with half decent skills have worked it out and cut us to ribbons - North play a similar game style and are cr@p too. We need to try manning up a lot closer and stop playing zone defence because it just isn't working

The other points highlighted were that we constantly commit too many numbers around a contest and then when the ball gets free the opposition have players free and away they go

Our forward fifty entries are abysmal - high kicks sitting on top of our taller forwards heads which make it dead easy to spoil - worse is that fact we don't have crumbers and invariably the opposition do and clear the ball far too easily - this is shown up week after week by our disproportionate inside 50 count but terrible conversion rate 

Until we start dealing with these issues we are in for some ugly defeats 

These are the reasons we are dead easy to play against and it needs to stop now !
