Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

It's partly a player / personnel issue (lack of outside runners / class / finish and quality smalls) but mostly a coaching / FD lead problem Sydee.

I would not be too harsh on the team as a whole.  There is effort by most and for me a there was a lift in that effort/output last week and y'day.  Some are playing within their own limitations and others badly out of form due to the injuries etc pre-season.  Sure some aren't up to it and may never be.  Others coming towards the end of their careers.  But it is without doubt the limitations of the coach and his panel as well as the list itself (which the players had no say in), which are having the biggest impact on our performances since the Prelim.

I cannot believe the Captain allows himself to be played on the wing.

It is absolutely ridiculous

We will not win a game at the ‘G this year if these selections take place.

Jones must play near the goal square or not at all.

It's footy we were poor and got beaten, move on to next game

Personally I think it was Checkers fault, only one not to get a name check

I can just see Goodwin before the game

'Ok boys I want basic skill errors, a lower work rate that the opposition across the board and no connection between the defence, mids and forwards'

You could ask yourself the same question..

Pace, skill and a reasonable gameplan, yep they have that.

You doubted that Red.

It's been plainly obvious since around the time they got,  young Curnow.  https://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_drafts?year=2015&t=N&s=P

Who knows...  They may have even organised him to muck up,  so he would fall to them.  That's how that club rolls...  Whatever works for them... They're not called  'Mounties'  for nothing Red.

Ever since the advent of  cardboard saddle bags.

The irony is off the charts.

You stick the boot in to passionate supporters over and over again thinking it will change anything.  Bad luck chap, you can't stop passion.

I have a plan to make a long-winded post tomorrow re: our game-plan.

Edit* I should have said, you're not entirely wrong. It's more about game-plan than personell at this stage.

Haven't we had enough long winded posts over the last 24 hours? ;)

And don't say I'm right in some scary way.  The footy Gods will hear you and punish you for it.

But we did make a mistake in only going for one tall defender and around four mid size ones.

Fundamentally, I've come to realise that who we have playing as our back 6 won't actually matter if the break down continues further up the field.

That's not to say that I think we missed Oscar. Clearly, he is vulnerable in more ways than one.

But this issue runs deeper and is now on Goodwin's shoulders. He has continued to play an extremely aggressive zone defence that relies on everything going our way further up the field.

I will continue tomorrow though. There's much to talk about.

Are you suggesting he should have done a Fletcher Christian SW?

I think most on here agree our best chance of winning is not to play Christian and his Co-Hort, Jake the Peg Lewis, on both wings but instead younger men with a little more zip!

I'm not saying we will definitely win just through those 2 logical starting positional changes....but surely it improves our chances a little.  And why wouldn't any decent coach worth his salt want to give his team the best possible chance of winning?

It’s stunning how quickly some players can simply lose any semblance of how to play to a consistent game plan.

But we do have to face facts - our top end talent falls away rapidly and our bottom 6 players are VFL calibre.

That, and a month less of a preseason than we usually get adds up to this nonsense.

I'm reluctant to post but I will give it a go.

Last year when we were winning the game was a lot slower paced. There were a lot more contests, and ball ups etc. That is where we excelled. Like you said we are still winning the ball

The biggest difference as far as I can tell is that the 666 allows fast scoring. We can not send extra players to contest at ball ups any more basically meaning the game has sped up. For example last year we were sending 2 or 3 from the back line to the centre contest, which you're not allowed to do now. This slowed the game up

So what does that mean? It means the game is more open. We are getting exposed in transition for a lack of pace - we are too slow, and our ball use is terrible so we can't retain the ball. Other teams just sit back and defend, wait for us to turn it over and out run us.

This was a problem last year as well, but we found a way through contests to slow it down.

Now it isn't as all as simple as that, but that's basically how I see it.

We won't get any better until we improve our defensive set ups (Lever and May come back) and we need pace all over the ground. We have too many slow, poorly skilled one pace players, too many inside mids, all our talls are slow.

Our inside 50 efficiency is embarrassing, teams are consistently out running us, teams score so easily against us because we defend so high and we are too slow or we turn it over in really bad spots.

Jones cops a lot on here but at least he is willing and able to provide run which isn't his natural go.

Anyway there is a lot of work to do for this group, I honestly can't see them getting better this year. We are too slow and too portly skilled.

Thank you AFL for opening the game up and keeping the big teams up the top. (although I am happy to see the Suns and Saints win a few games)

And I agree with @Redleg the Blues will beat us easily

So, my question is.... why have most other clubs accurately predicted the implications of the 666 rule, adjusted their game plan accordingly, taught the players, who in turn have mastered it, and... we have not?

When the opposition run the ball out of our forward line, transition to attack and score an easy goal because of our inability to hold the ball in the fifty, it has zero to do with 666 or any other afl induced rule change.

It's our fault alone. The rotten part is that if we can fix this problem, we will become dominant with our extra inside 50 entries that we can convert. Maybe not far to go but it will take a massive effort from the coaching and selection panel.

Have we reviewed the Perth final yet?

Seems like we didn't learn anything then and we are still being beaten the same way....

To me at the time this seemed to be so arrogant and a wasted opportunity to learn from our defeat by the ultimate premiers.

We we’re hopelessly outplayed and out-coached: thorough analysis (without recriminations) could only have helped our development, yet the coaching staff appeared to share the delusion that this was an aberration.   Since that day every time we have played it is clear that it was not.

PS: are the cumulative season stats for this year and last for total inside 50s, percentage scores and percentage goals per inside 50 available somewhere?  Our inability to convert what are usually dominant I 50 opportunities is appalling and reflects inept game plan and/or lazy forwards

We need a few zippy small to mediums up forward to help keep the ball in a little more often or cause a few extra turnovers tiers.  Our one exception is Hunt but he's only good at closing in a straight line and very ordinary y'day.  Jeffy the only other available that is capable of impacting.

We have been deficient in this area for decades.  Other teams seem to grow them on trees.

I made the comment last night that besides AVB and Hannan who are we missing when we won rd 22, 23, elimination and the qualifying. Whilst their not stars they are important to our list and their respective roles late last year.

Could someone please explain how the new 666 rule is killing us? I think it’s a non issue, we win plenty of clearances at centre bounces. Our entry’s into fwd 50 and ability to keep the ball in there are far bigger issues.

Ive never bought into the “it takes years to learn a game plan”, our players (the majority) can play. Clearly it’s not working so change it up. Tigers beating Port last week showed every team what is possible.

Mate, I was a member for a Zillion years before I gave up the ghost in the Neeld years! I bought a membership this year based on solid belief! Well didn't that just go straight down the toilet??

I won't go this week and possibly the rest of the year... this club bleeeds us then tantalises then just hemorrhages blood from the soul.

Time to give up the dream and play more golf!

I'm over this fiasco!

I got the email with video of SG talking to members.  It smacked of desperation and SG looked very uncomfortable as it was post match.  This club has fallen from 4th to bottom 2 in the space of 6 games.  There is more to this than the club is talking about.

We're Melbourne... it's what we're best at.

We don't listen... to the AFL, and the TV stations,  and the crowds who turn away from the game,  because of the years of congested play When others were pick running players in the draft like DeGoey, and others,  we didn't.

We decided to go for Milton the Monster.

Like a few years back,  when Wines, Grundy, McRae, and Stringer where there for us to take.   We took the smart option of the best small mid. Toumpas.

How do we keep getting things so right...  for Open Mise`re !

I can't actually answer that, as I'm not in the inner sanctum - but its a good question and one we never get an answer to.

But my answer would be look at the ladder - the slow teams (Sydney, us, Adel to a lesser extent) are all down the bottom. Especially on big grounds like the MCG, speed IMO is now the Ace

From what I can see, It seems the good teams focus on stopping the other team scoring (Geelong as an example are up there and been doing it for over a decade) and also have good outside run and ball use (Port Ess are good examples).

We on the other hand have too many one paced players - I won't name names, and it is the defence that is the problem but it's also the pace to be able to defend the ground in our current press. We are too slow all over the ground, and Im talking our star players not just the easy targets potted on this site. Our mids don't put on enough defensive pressure and our forward line is too slow.

The long story short is footy has completely changed from 2018 to 2019 hence why I am hating on Gil and the AFL [censored]$.

I have no idea if our coaching staff weren't ready or we are just not good enough, and what is even worse we will draft up a fast running team and the AFL will change the rules again..... I really hate the media and the AFL

Anyway it means we are buggered for 2019... and the coaches have a lot of work to do.

Don't hold your breath - according to SG "our brand" is still perfectly fine we are just too easy to play against atm - well that isn't good is it !

I agree we are pedestrian in the speed department, generally have poor skills which get highlighted more in the wet and not a single forward that opposition backs would be concerned about kicking multiple goals

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
