Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Yep, if Roos actually said on the post game last night that what Goodwin is implementing is an extension of what he was putting in place, I just don't buy that.

Goodwin almost immediately implemented this ridiculous aggressive defensive press, which with complete midfield dominance, can and does lock the ball inside our 50 for an extended length of time. However, this almost always leads to easy opposition goals out the back.

It also means that without us converting every clutch chance under pressure in our own crowded forward half, this game style has the propensity to break our back psychologically.

Whenever we have dominance over a team and we fail to score in our crowded forwardline, seeing the opposition slingshot down the other end for an easy goal, is soul destroying and undoes a lot of our hard work.

The game style sets us up for failure more often than not and relies on such little margin for error that it is so clearly unsustainable.

This is year 3 of the aggressive press and it doesn't work without, as you say mate, world record midfield dominance. That's unsustainable. You can't expect that every week and every season.

I want sustained success and I'm sure the club does too.

This is one of the great posts of 2019 AF if not THE post of the year!

The other point is....under this severely crowded forward line (in comparison to other game styles which don't rely on such an aggressive high press and resulting in more open forward lines like the Saints on Sat)...

1.  Your key forwards must somehow perform their role ie; taking marks on the lead, the odd contested mark inside 50 and converting at a decent % OR bringing the ball to ground for crumbers front and square; and

2.  Your small forwards need to crumb front and square or occasionally out the back on a fast break from a long chaos ball deep, try to create something and score occasionaly from ground balls and also place pressure on opponents when we lose possession.

For various reasons including some poor form, lack of Key Forward talent?, lack of quality smaller forwards (injuries to Hannan / Garlett and no other viable alternatives at Casey) ...our forward line has failed to be effective at No.1 & No. 2 so far.

Example re No.1...

So far this season our 2 key forwards Tom & Sam have averaged between them....

1.2 goals per match; and

2.2. marks inside 50.

However, the ability to be effective is, as you say, being impacted significantly by an overly crowded forward line caused by Goody's stubborness to review and adjust this part of his game style.

The engine room is still running ok on the inside.  The outside needs fixing.

The defense is leaking badly but IMO only because of the sling shot effect /Joe the goose you have highlighted above.  Fixing/adjusting this aggressive press should go a fair way towards assisting our ability to defend until Lever & May (if he makes it back for 2019) return.

Goody addresses this and drills the change up into the playing group and we might start to win more often.

Other fixes (outside run, zippy small forwards needed who can FINISH) can be addressed in next season or two if we are smart at the recruiting / trade table.

Nice work AF

Not wanting to question Jason Taylor but it was questionable at the time to pick Charlie Spargo.

Most of Demonland had Charlie Constable and Jack Petruccelle in the 15-25 range in the 2017 draft. They both were available at pick 29 and then Petruccelle at pick 37 (Petty).  Petruccelle’s pace was noted by most of us as being in demand to our side.

Geelong swooped on Constable and the Eagles grabbed Petruccelle.

Both would be very handy.  And both are local boys.

Can’t find Misson thread, but another welcome exit at seasons end, hopefully we can land at top replacement who can fix players quick ala Hawthorn.

In 2017/2018 Richmond barely had an Injury, so the side begins to gel properly which then has = 2017 Premiership,

Both Hawks and Cats in their dominant years hardly had injuries, so their core group gelled = Premiership

We since 2017, haven’t been able to get any continual, team consistency......

Not sticking up for Misson as he’s run his race here but who aside from Hogan was out injured in last year’s finals?

Well Lever, every bit helps, but wasn’t Lever due to be back by round 5? And May supposed to be back, all we get fed from Misson’s injury report is all are out for longer than expected (4-6 weeks).?? Not to mention the poor handling of the dreaded foot injuries and the handling of Joel Smiths quad in the JLT.

Jason Taylor Record is starting to look like that of Prendagast

Petracca over De Goey

Weiderman over Curnow/McKay

Spargo over constable

Petty over Petrucelle

outside of first rounders, over 5 year period from 2013-2018, he has only managed to successfully draft 1 walk up starter in our 22 (Harmes). It’s no wonder we seriously lack any depth....

not a rebuild but a redesign of the gameplan and strategies

It’s clear Goodwin has no idea what to do. The game plan from last year has been picked apart by the opposition and the players can’t implement what he wants.

This manic hand pass game has to stop. Hawthorn won 3 premierships in a row by chipping the ball around by foot at the G. Why couldn’t we mimic their game style?

We need to action what Collingwood and richmond did with their assistant coaches. Clear the decks and get new ideas into the club.

Im still in shock that the season is over in April

When Lewis came he was able to do the Hawthorn chip kick. Sadly he has neither time nor space to execute it now.

Yes, fair enough but. Melbourne ok kicking last night or Hawthorn standard kicking last night?

Going super early but who can we target realistically, that will help fix the holes on our last, could start with some good kicking mids, quick pressure goal sneak forwards, trade Wied, for a Jono Patton type ohh and another ruckman wouldn’t go astray for 2020

As a start I would like to see three or four players personally mentored by ex senior players with the right skills and attitude.

These players are Petracca, (Aaron Davey), Weideman, (Neitz), Hunt (??).

If we can lift those players by 10-20% its  a big impact. Each has raw skill that for one reason or another is not being realised.

As I keep saying abandon the gameplan at Casey and concentrate on skills development for the foreseeable future.

Play the gameplan (whatever it is) for say one half every two or three matches if necessary.

At both levels winning is not the mantra for the 2019 season...it is performance

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
