Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

2019 is over..... to say otherwise is to don the rose coloured glasses that have dogged this team for the last fifteen odd years.

Ok... the coach is going nowhere but perhaps some outside mentoring would help in this regard.

First step for me is to change the Casey gameplan to emphasise skills and possession. It's an easy one.

Then post bye we introduce it at senior level with input from the youth who have become used to it at Casey level.

Develop a few trick plays using Gawn and Oliver.

Let Weideman show us if he has the goods in the forward department in an uncrowded forward line.

Then comes the hard part. Play Petty, Stretch and one or two others for a run of five games.

Results and ladder position are irrelevant as long as there is a plan that can be used to win games in 2020.

Sadly I think the problems run deep. Our rise up the ladder last year was really based on a purple patch of chaos and attacking football with players in red hot form. Sadly unsustainable. From that list we have lost some good warriors in Hogan, obviously a star, Vince, Tyson and Pederson. The latter three had downside but were good club contributors. On the other side of the ledger we have added nothing in the way of replacements so far with the Gold Coast guys injured and Preuss ok but second string ruckman are easy to find.

I think a rebuild is actually necessary. Not so much the players but the whole football department.

financially we cannot deal with a rebuild.

That would be the third or fourth in a row.

The football department have the rest of this season to show what they can do.

We have five or six players who are potentially elite. The challenge is to leverage a gameplan around those players

Agree. Richmond 2015 finished 5th (same as us in 2018) although got knocked out finals first round.

2016 finished 13th, and we all know what happened in 2017.

Success doesn’t always happen in a straight line. But I will say, that teams like Richmond and Collingwood had major shake ups of their FD before it all clicked. Same thing needs to happen with us and hence the clean out of some dead wood assistants.

Too defeatist I think.  In 1987 after 16 games we were 6 wins and 10 losses.  We ended up winning the last 6 in a row and finishing the H&A in 5th spot and should have won the preliminary final.  We are capable of putting a block of form together which could still see us reach finals.  Writing off the season is a cop out and gives the club more excuses for inept performances.  I have paid this club a fortune over the years in membership fees and I want to see a decent return on that investment.  Effort and a willingness to do  the basics well would be a great start.

my plan was to introduce the main changes post bye.

If somehow we are still in at that time ...okay review.

Step 1 is a new gameplan at Casey

I agree with the revamp but some coaches ( not Goodwin ) have to go. Backline and forward line in particular. There is something wrong there and what it is I don't know.

In their defence how would any coach make this gameplan work.

At its core it crowds the forward line and thins your defensive line.

Had Gunston kicked straight we would have lost v Hawthorn and against Geelong we couldn't kick a score in that first half for love or money.

Like your thinking,

need to start planning for next year now !

Assistant coaches and players need to change, we need some fresh ideas.

I honestly think at least 11-12 players need to be moved on/traded/delisted at the end of year.

We need to be bold at the trade table, use our 1st pick on the best available  (Rowell, Anderson or Lachlan Ash )

Draft/trade in another key forward

Trade for some running outside mids with later picks ( Ed Langdon hopefully for around a 2nd Round pick , Issac Cumming from GWS who is not getting a game and dominating the NEAFL

Draft another small fwd with pace and goal sense

Bring in a useful FA if possible (Brandon Ellis perhaps)

I think players that may need to be moved on could be:

Frost or O Mac

Garlett

JKH

Keilty

Lewis

ANB

T Smith

AVB ( would like to keep if he can get fit but if he could fetch a second rounder might be worth trading)

C Wagner

J Wagner

May also need to be really bold like port Adelaide last year and trade a big name like they did with Wingard depending on what we could get of course

May be Petracca or T Mac could fall in this category

Lastly I think Nathan Freeman could be worth a chance in this up coming mid season rookie draft, dominating in he VFL with huge numbers and has the pace we need

But doesn’t really matter what players we bring in our system/game plan is not working and players will start losing faith very quickly if things don’t change

A rebuild is required however any talk of it could likely put the Club back again, possibly forever. I have no faith at all in a Gary Pert led Club if my limited dealings with the Club are anything to go by.

Good to see the comments thus far are not too extreme.  There is still plenty we can do this year to prepare for the future; and of course I’m not completely dismissing playing finals, but it is now looking unlikely (I was believer up until yesterday).

We need to look to Geelong 2006-07 and Richmond 2016-17.  Both teams came off finals years and were expected to feature in September again.  Both teams fell in a hole due to disfunction in the football department, player attitudes and expectations, injuries and some rotten luck along the way.  Both teams underwent a significant review and made structural changes in the off-season.  Both teams went on to win a flag.

I believe the list, for the most part, is very capable.

I believe the senior coach is very capable.

I also believe there has to be serious questions asked and answered as to how we are being run and led as a whole.  There appears to be a level of disfunction in the club as we appear uncertain, unhappy and frustrated.

Even when we were not playing well last year there was always an air or confidence, even arrogance about the place.  That joy and attitude seems to be lost and we seem meek and lacking in spark and confidence.

Redesign the game plan assumes the presence of one, for which there is little evidence so far this year ?

You are right but to me there seems to be a discord between the players and coaches.

Maybe for you.  But not for me.  When we can't mathematically make the finals, then it is season over.

Until then I'll hold on to the small sliver of sanity I have left and believe we can make changes now and turn our fortunes around.

Interesting suggestion...

Has Freeman managed to keep his pace after all his hamstring injuries?  Was a jet in his draft year...

Operations & injuries obviously haven’t helped the Demons start.

6 6 6 hasn’t helped as it seems to reward speed on the outside, where we have struggled over the last couple of years, and we haven’t had any success with our draft picks to fill this void, same with trying to find small quick forwards.

A few players don’t chase Lewis and Jones being notable culprits. I think as many people noted last year we couldn’t play Vince & Lewis in same team, This definitely applies for Lewis and Jones this year.

Jones while having a day out against Sydney, stands out for not chasing.

Wagners just aren’t up to it!

Agree with thoughts on give Stretch a five game  go at it on the wing!

Baker doesn’t seem to star in VFL so not sure why he will make it!

I think the season we were expecting or hoping for is over. We’re not challenging fr the flag this year. We’re just not. I think it’s time for trying out new ideas... and maybe that’s the way to turn things around.

Nothing has become clearer than that our gameplan relied on having the greatest midfield dominance in the history of all time. A real Brisbane Fab-Four and West Coast mid-2000s style continuous control of clearances and scraps.

And when our group of excellent young mids are all in form, with the game's best ruckman stomping around as well, that goes alright.

But how can you rely all day, each week, on a gameplan that relies on not actually needing to defend much because you are always winning the ball?

We could win 2-to-1 in the clearances, but if the other side actually works in their defense, it wont add up to much if we aren't working on ours.

All we need to do is make finals.  Anything can happen there.

Once we can't do that, then it's season over.  I'm happy for them to tweak a few things, swap players around a little and so forth, to get things right.  But the season I was hoping for isn't over.... yet.

Yep, if Roos actually said on the post game last night that what Goodwin is implementing is an extension of what he was putting in place, I just don't buy that.

Goodwin almost immediately implemented this ridiculous aggressive defensive press, which with complete midfield dominance, can and does lock the ball inside our 50 for an extended length of time. However, this almost always leads to easy opposition goals out the back.

It also means that without us converting every clutch chance under pressure in our own crowded forward half, this game style has the propensity to break our back psychologically.

Whenever we have dominance over a team and we fail to score in our crowded forwardline, seeing the opposition slingshot down the other end for an easy goal, is soul destroying and undoes a lot of our hard work.

The game style sets us up for failure more often than not and relies on such little margin for error that it is so clearly unsustainable.

This is year 3 of the aggressive press and it doesn't work without, as you say mate, world record midfield dominance. That's unsustainable. You can't expect that every week and every season.

I want sustained success and I'm sure the club does too.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
