Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The 2019 Mid Season Draft

Anyone that applied for last years end of season draft correct?

Who can clubs recruit?

Clubs will be able to draft any footballers who have already been on an AFL list, or who nominated for the 2018 NAB AFL Draft.

Any player delisted at the end of 2018 cannot be re-selected by the club that delisted them, unless they nominated for last year's NAB AFL Draft.

There will be a five-day window for players to nominate for the Mid-Season Rookie Draft from Monday April 29 to Friday May 3.

We should be picking a young player who can be developed rather than a solitary player who may be able to play this year.

Our problem is injuries, so when (if) those players return, it would be unlikely for a "ready made" to get a game....i.e. a wasted pick.

As well we have a whole raft of players who will retire or be delisted this year.  I could give a list of 7 today who would not affect the present or future performance of the club.

We don't need another one who would be added to that list.  We need to think about the future, not this season, which is already shot.

great theory but hard in practice.

In the national draft these players would be picks 70 plus. Very hard to recognise potential at that point.

It's simple ... best available but not a small please. Our depth is so sadly lacking even a project depth player would be a plus.

Why don’t we:

- Retire Lewis and Garlett

- Inactive list Vanders and maybe even Jetta

Take 4 or even 5 picks. It’s 50k a pick, plus 20k if they’re delisted at the end of the year.

We know Lewis and Garlett are done so why not look at replacements now? We’ve also got Stretch, J Wagner, JKH, Maynard, Jones and other options to come off the list at the end of the year.

There’s usually plenty of 19 year olds or state league types taken in the 2nd-4th round of the draft. Some work, some don’t. Why not take a huge roll of the dice?

Maybe a bit too much with 4-5  but would agree with taking at least 2 picks if we could LTI a player.

I would look for best key forward and best skillful/pacy player around and if a 3rd pick was possible a young Jeffy type, as Bedford will be a way off if he even makes it.

More than likely however we will go very conservative and take only one pick.

Not clearing AVB to the Swans for a pick or player, is turning out another disaster for us with him unable to get on the park again.

Don’t understand the gloom about the mid-season draft- I’m a bit excited by the prospects.  Tim Kelly was playing WALF two years ago.

Plenty of high quality players plucked from the state leagues in the last few years!

Clearly I don’t know of the salary cap implications, nor do I know of the cultural implications of retiring or making inactive a bunch of senior players.

I just think teams are being super conservative with a new rule whilst usually teams find advantages by being creative or bold. We’ve seen it with academy pick trading, future pick trading, the Tigers taking Sydney Stack etc etc

My plan is probably more of the Mark Neeld style moneyball but if these picks are all 10-20% chance of being a good player I’d rather multiple swings.

Bit harsh. His impact last year was worth the years he toiled away in rehab for us taking up a spot on the list. I don't think many players or picks would give us that kind of bang for buck. He has all year to get right for next year and make another big impact.

Its obvious that speed is one of the teams major deficiencies, along with silky skill.

That in mind, i can see Goodwin insisting that we draft the player who can say "Connection going forward" with perfect enunciation, in the shortest possible time.

He will also insist that they remain unflappably positive even after dropping several vowels in a row, and slurring the last 10 words.

Actual footballing ability not to be considered.

Because MFC.

This would seem to suggest that a player who has just retired (meaning players like Tom Boyd, Shaun Grigg, etc but not specifically them) could be drafted by another club, although I suspect that part of their retirement agreement with the club they have just left would have some form of restriction (a "non-compete clause") to stop this from happening.

Pretty sure they don't get taken off the list until the end of the year, regardless of when they retire.

It said later in the article that players who retired last year (Cyril Rioli) could only be in the mid-season draft if they'd also nominated for the 2018 National Draft.

Come on Jason Taylor, pluck us another A Jakovich  or L Jurrah from somewhere.   There are surely hidden gems all over Australia.   Inject some excitement into this boring club.

Good point. I assume the retirement allows the clubs from which they retire to draft another player as the retiree can be considered the equivalent of a long term injury.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
