Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Just checking we are talking about the same player. I thought the thread was about a guy named Lance 'Buddy' Franklin . . . currently playing for the Sydney Swans and formerly of Hawthorn. The one that hasn't played less than 17 games per year for the last ten years (19 last year and all four this year), has kicked at least 50 goals a year for 11 of the last 12 years (including 57 last year), averages at least three goals a game (including 2018) over a career spanning 294 games.

Obviously I'm thinking of a different Buddy Franklin . . . not the "overweight, overpaid, has-been" one.

Yep that's the one. Can we get that output from him? Then yes. Everyone with a brain would take him.

I don't think his output will remain the same.

I 'spose my point is BAMF, there is absolutely nothing in the data which suggests he's in decline. Yes, he's 32. But he's a sensational athlete and been a superstar. His decline is likely to be gradual rather than sudden would be my guess.

His reported contract is 10 million over 10 years.

Under your scenario...

2013-2017 5 x 1.1million = $5,500,000

2017-2020: 3 x 1.2million = $3,600,000

Total = $9.1million

So yeah, in hindsight not too bad. But you only have him contracted till 2020 when you could reduce it right down or more likely let him retire. Plus you would much prefer this option as a club when signing as you get to renegotiate in 2017.

The AFL advised at the time of the trade that Buddy's salary would stay in the salary cap even if he retires prematurely (which they will probably go against). If he is forced to retire at the end of this year (as you say unlikely but possible), he will be chewing over a million per year for the next three years. That's huge.

Sydney have been lucky that he has been able to produce at such a high level for so long. It really could have been a lot worse. They took a punt and it has largely paid off, but it was outrageous at the time.

They really have bitten off more than they could chew with this trade.

It has come back to bite them in the [censored] hard. I have no sympathy what so ever for them what so ever.

It the type of trade that can wipe you out of contention for a long time.

No doubt whatsoever?   I'd love to live in that universe.

Is the opening 'we' referring to supporters, or the players and coaches who played with him.  The supporters' views would hardly matter.  Also I hadn't realised that our incompetent medicos had examined him and rejected him.  Sorry, I have a niggling doubt you are right.

Do the maths Sue.

Beams, Ablett, Sam Mitchell, Hodge (will), Lewis (will) all return to their true homes.

BS.

I agree Redleg.

The petulance and immaturity of the supporter-base in vilifying Scully and his old man on social media...and the club's effort to play the emotional card (promised a dying man) during a period of absolute off-field mis-trust and skull-duggary (Connolly, Schwab, Bailey).....yeh, I reckon the way the club pressured this kid off-field, and the juvenile antics of its supporter base, was absolutely BS.

Beams, Ablett, but not Scully.  Do the maths sunshine.

The debate rages for years over which supporter base has nothing in-between its' ears.  Gee, over the Scully saga, and the applause for Lyon picking Neeld, and the salivation over the Lewis deal, we are definitely right up there in the mix for gold.

I agree. He is a freak. He is amazing. There was a preseason game against us back around 2008 or 09 where he destroyed us. I have been a big fan since that game. It was clear that this guy was cut from different cloth.

However, everyone declines towards the end. Buddy doesn't even train anymore. It's all recovery from the previous game.

Would you take him for $300k each year for 2 years for a third round pick? He'll yes!

Would you take him for 300k each year for 4 years and a third round pick? Maybe. (He is a freak after all)

Would you take for for 1.2mill each year for 4 years and a second round pick?

Hell no. That's around about what we would be talking about here. Hell no!

Mostly agree.

Disagree on the Lewis trade. That was worth salivating over and it has worked out very well for us. We gave up nothing.

IMO,  buddy likes the curtain around Sydney.   He gets to do his stuff in relative anonymity.  I don't think its he who wants to leave Sydney.

.

Each time WE, or others,  takes a way too highly payed player off the Swans books,  it will come back to hurt us,  as it frees up the Swans to go spend on younger players we should be after.

.

Let them wallow in their own Buddy debt.

Indeed.

BTW Scully would have been the perfect pick up as I said at the time. Perhaps far too much angst by some.

I also wanted Scully at the time when the speculation began to circulate that GWS were willing to offload him for a ham sandwich.

I'd be concerned with our list management if we didn't at least consider Scully despite his injury concerns.

We lacked outside classy wingers last year and our only real outside run this year is a good VFL player in Billy Stretch. Too many people around here were stuck in 2011 and couldn't move forward.

HWSNBN made it clear he would only go to two clubs from GWS - we were not one of them.  Why make a play for a player who has no interest in the red and blue!!

not that outrageous..let's say they had given him a five year deal which had run out at the end of 2017. They probably would have needed to pay him an extra $100k for each of those first five years. At the end of 2017 he would have commanded a three year deal at say $1.2M.

Assuming he retires at the end of 2019 (big assumption) the difference is only around $1M. Not chicken feed but to get Buddy to Sydney it was well worth it.

DJ 5 years of Buddy ended in 2018 left after 2013 flag over Dockers.

After all he was a Melbourne supporter and might have some feelings. Call it a romance who knows ? What will be, will be.

Maybe it turns out to be a bargain like a Scully although in his case it is early to say. A 2 year contract in his twilight  might be in our favour and after all he won't have line up on Frosty.  Don't quote the last part.

I would take him in a heartbeat , He  would command the best back man every week. Put him sitting in the forward 40 area  and stays there, even in a  pocket. Could be the icing on the cake we need, with Lewis gone at the end of the year, we are losing lots of experience. We will be chasing a experienced player . We have the salary cap room, we have already started that we have room for one more star. If what i've read is correct he will earn approx 3.5 to 4 mill over the next 3 years, then he worths a second round pick . if the swans pay some of that expect a first round pick. But remember we have salary cap space and need to use our first round pick !

Would you pay Boyd 6 mill for 6 years to win a premiership ??  there are no guarantee's but Buddy would get us closer !!

And I want to see us win at least one Premiership !!

I am not too sure that Buddy communicates the strategies too well. He is more interested in his own statistics and purpose.

that's a good way to look at it.

I suspect the figure would be at least $500k with the Swans paying the rest.

The key is contract length which would make the deal difficult. On the best case scenario he has another two years after this one.

At the right price Hawks might do it with the thought that they could use him for coterie activities etc in the outlier years.

This puts our speculation in perspective. Would Franklin even want to come to Melbourne? (The club, not the city). No one knows what he really thinks. He has always been somewhat of an enigma to me. He is a private person who appears to march to the beat of his own drum. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. It's just the way he is.

My apologies Dame Gaga.  HWSNBN refers to Scully in the posts suggesting we should have made a play for him.

That is a good point re Buddy being private and this is probably all media click bait.

Edit: HWSNBN= He Who Shall Not Be Named when Scully became a .persona non grata

Bigger BS.

Re writing history is an art form for some.

I have never to my memory denigrated a player, other than this bloke, who has left us for greater financial reward and there have been plenty over the years.

This bloke is a scumbag. His lying is there for all to see. To our dying President, to the members when he said I am staying and want to be a one club player, to his team mates, even to the public at large. when he was interviewed at Sydney Airport with his family and said he was just having a look around and then the next day a video was being sold at outlets with him in his GWS gear. We know the video wasn’t made that night. I suspect he even lied to GWS about his injury to get to Hawthorn just  like he did with that terrible knee injury he had, which disappeared when he left us for GWS.

To me this bloke is scum.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
