All evidence doesn't necessarily support what you are saying on defence EO.  Statistically on average he brings as many pressure acts or more (and 1 more tackle per match inside 50) vs say a Spargo or a Melksham.  He also averages more tackles per game.

On the offensive side he also averages 1 more goal per game than those two.  I am comparing them as they are about the only two (available) smallish forward players who presently play a role that might keep Jeffy out.  He also has slightly more score involvements (on average) than Spargo or Melk to this point.

Now what IF,  CoreyW plays against the Saints,  and then comes out,  for Lockhart to play the Tigers.?

What IF Preuss does not play against the Saints, but Keilty comes in...  But then Preuss gets up for the ANZAC Eve game Vs Tigers... and Jeffy comes in-tandem, to be his feet. 

Then Keilty would then miss the Tigers game. 

 

This scenario gives Preuss more time to recover his shoulder.   And IMV the Tigers game will be less vigorous, for a player with sore shoulder.

Based on history with St Kilda and looking at team sheets, I'm starting to get worried about the Burce/Membrey pair. Not that they will have sepctacular games, but that they could end up with four goals each just by following the process and being ready with lead-mark-goal on the end of St Kilda's fast movement and our loose and spacious defense.

Anyone want to help calm me down on that, what might the plan be?

Don't misunderstand me,... I like  cWagner as well...  but he is a winger/half-forward in my mind.    And behind the Melksham's  and  Hannan's.

 

Spargo plays a different riole,  bringing very different skllls.  Spargo is ahead of his age/experience curve imv.  @ 19Yrs of age.

He will get much stronger physically,  and will learn to become even more composed than now.  He will I'm sure build a better tank as well.   Hoping he can become a rover/half-forward,  in future seasons.

If anyone watched Hodge last night & didn't buy into the Bruce...Hodgy BS, you would have seen a great player past his use by date.

The Pies ran rings around him & all the experience & guidance in the world doesn't cover that up. He wasn't on his own last night of course but his experience added nothing & had them one man down from the start. Injury then added to that.

If we are to be a serious finals contender then someone else needs to take the leadership role down back. We can't afford to carry a tour guide. Lewis like Hodge has gone one or two seasons too many...

Selection is hampered due to our long list of injured players, which will disadvantage any football club. The club decided to go with Lewis and Jetta this week. I only expressed an opinion...

I just want to go to the game and see an enormous EFFORT and a WIN from my TEAM, no matter who plays. When the injured players return the side will be much different I'm sure. You can only work with what is available at your disposal. I look forward to seeing one of the younger players putting their hands up (figuratively speaking) and taking on a leadership role on the field. I haven't seen it happen yet.

Both are effectively rookies DV so must be given plenty more time obviously.  I see Corey as more of a swing man between the arcs playing a little more time pushing back to defend and intercept where possible but early days.  Spargo more a smallish half flanker pushing high into mid field at times.

Spargo is above AFL standard in disposal efficiency both with hands and kicking which i have no doubt is getting him over the line with the MC at times.  We need more of these, especially with kicking and to be above AFL average is a great asset for us at this early stage.  Just needs to build his possession count which should happen the more he plays as his tank improves.  Appears to be on track to becoming a regular solid contributor for us for years ahead provided he keeps his head down and works super hard on the track etc.

Yep, (corey) he plays positions around the boundary,  I agree with that.  Outside-ish but with plenty of go in him.

(spargo)  I think even at this early stage Spargo brings our forwardline stability,  composure and direction.   He spots up targets inside 40Mtrs beautifully.

His kicking/snaps for goal I'm sure will get better as he matures,  and gets stronger in his legs.  He will increase his kick penetration with this.

That's what Goody & Co. are getting good coin for.

From an amateurs perspective...

- Control the middle clearances (we have arguably the best ruckman in the comp and a stellar inside mid field) as much as possible at center bounces.

- All other times protect the middle of the ground if zoning and force them wide.

- If that fails and we are still getting smashed on the sling shot be prepared to go man on man to force the turnover

- Play a slow possession game if they have any sort of run on (eg., 3 goals in a row).  Slowly try to wrestle back control of the game and tempo until we are ahead on the scoreboard.

- If we get ahead by more than a few goals.....then we can release ....

I just don't see a role for Jordan Lewis in 2019. Just too slow to match up against most half forwards and provides little run and carry off half back.

My fear is that the Saints will easily outrun us. Goody loves his inside mids and utilities. Always on about winning the contest. I'd love it if he watched the better teams of 2019 and saw their equal focus on run and carry/speed. We have too many players who choose to go into a contest when its their role to either close down an opponent in position to receive from contest or be that option for us.

That was the Saints game plan last year.  Run run run to outrun Melbourne.  It lead to Bruce and Membrey looking like Riewoldt and Franklin.  We must contain their runners.

Looking at the St Kilda team, it is poor. No-name defence, no stars in the midfield. We should dominate in the ruck and at stoppages. Once we use the ball ok we should win. 

They could hurt us on the spread but we should have enough talent to win. 

If we lose we will be 1-4 and the saints 4-1. 

Just.... cannot happen.

Rubbish.  Hes already one of the best decision makers at the club,  rarely wastes a possession,  sets up goal after goal.

He turned 19 just a few months ago and you're already writing him off.

I actually think hes exactly whats been missing down back. Holds the whole show together, when all about him are losing their heads. Lets just see how he goes for the next month or so. Will be his last year though.

I am supportive of this possible eventuality as there are quite a few 'neck breathers' near and further for the Dees' backline; it could well mean that OMac sees the year out at Casey, not returning to the AFL side this year. What is suggested for him from several quarters is that all will be ameliorated/repaired/reinvented/recuperated by such a stint at Casey, to get his mojo back and thus, becoming competitive again and in weekly consideration for the AFL team. I'd posit that he still should not make the cut based upon skills and aptitudes, alone. Except for taking two defensive marks  and one clearing punch in one game, I have never seen in OMac what others proclaim.

This has been a reasonably consistent theme with Goodwin from the outset for the slightly more senior players - dropping them a week or so after everyone on here has truly lost patience. Validates what most of us can see, but also suggests he's willing to back in players for a time if in the midst of a form slump. I won't always agree but it's a worthy trait. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

In the big-time, Spargo is learning rapidly when to go, when to get, when and how to give, what weaponry to employ for best effect. These are big lessons that he is handling well, so far. There is every expectation that these aptitudes will continue to be enriched and deployed with far less hindrance than that effected currently.

Lets review it at the end of 2020 when hes actually played a season as a 20 year old instead of a teenager. And even then it might be too early.
