Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

This is not the first time in the past few weeks that we've heard referencing to buying in. We’re now at year 6 of the Roos/Goodwin build or year 3 of Goodwins tenure. We should be well passed the stage of having to ‘buy in’.

What has happened over the offseason to fracture the club? Is it player level? Coaching level? Something has happened if we’ve reverted back to the level of needing people to buy in!

Agreed. As i posted in the pre game thread, he seems lost at sea with no contingency plan.

Not dissecting the Preliminary Final is the first problem i believe.

It was obviously far worse than just a “bad day”

We are still playing the same way 6 months later

If we still need players to buy into a 3 year-old ( Arguably even longer ) game plan, SOMEONE has to accept responsibility for that not already being the case. If players still cant buy into the plan then either the plan sucks, or the offending players need to go. How is it they are still in the team if they havent bought in? Are there too many?  Are they seen as too senior/important? Do they have goat photos?

Whatever the answer this is simply disgusting by those concerned, players and/or coaches.

Time to grow up MFC.

All those saying players aren't buying into the game plan even though it's existed for 3+ years seems a bit off the mark to me.

The game changed quite significantly with 666, and our game plan had  to change to suit that. Our game plan is literally 3 rounds old, not 3+ years. Good example of this is that when we win clearances now, we rely on the midfield to deliver the footy into F50 more simply because our sweeping back flankers cant get there in time anymore. This is a good reason why connection has arguably gone backwards.

Having said that, if players are going rogue and not "buying in" then that is more than a worry than the 3 losses themselves. Way to fill us with confidence demons. If by "not buying in" means not adhering to the game plan, then that's really bloody bad at this point of the teams development, and at odds with the perceived excellent relationships between players and coach. Alternatively, if by "not buying in" they simply mean putting in the work required to execute the game plan, then that's fixable.

Hope not lost yet. A loss tomorrow will be really hard to swallow though. Frost needs to play out of his skin and shut down buddy otherwise we are in quite a bit of trouble.

This 'buy in" talk just reeks.

As some have commented, even the body language of our leaders seems off.

It's intriguing and depressing.

I'm usually really optimistic coming into games even over the crap of the last 10 to 20 years.

Right now I'm not buying in either.

I've never been been so disillusioned. Maybe it's because we started playing so well last year and now we're playing worse than the suns ffs

Agree. It's all very strange.

I thought the big take away from last year was all players had 'bought in'. They were a 'brotherhood', united as one yada yada yada.

Now after 3 rounds players are not on board and we need an honesty session?

Hezus, we need a win this week. Or i'll struggle to buy in i telz ya

Time to grow up MFC.

They bought in, they committed last year. and we got results.

This year there is a rule change, and the players themselves are saying they aren't doing what it was they did, in 2018.

We saw a snippet of what they can do,  last week.

But how good can we be this year,  now,  after an off season of talking ourselves up ???

We have to assume , surely, that as any cross section of people, there are some quite intelligent among the list.

Only an idiot isn't going to wonder how appropriate the 'plan' is.   NOW ??

.

I think the truth lay in between the off season surgeries,  the 666 rule,  and all the talk of making grand finals.

In short our mental fitness,  our physical health/fitness,  and the upset to the rules which we built the team around, gamestyle included.

I believe its a mix of all these things.

And some have been saying since the start of last year,  that we have the best Midfield going...  and I've tried to counter that, last season.

We do not....  But no-one was having any of it.

We don't have the polish inside, with our beasts.

And I've been wanting us to add the likes of,  dShiel for some seasons...  and Ben Ainsworth, Jack Higgins from they're draft years.

We lack the agility, and the step thru traffic, and the foot nimbleness and speed that these small players bring.

Gawn finally started to be the leader he could be,  last season,  until that Prelim final in Perth.  Now he's battling away against two opponents week in...  And he's still not taking enough marks about the ground.

That is the biggest weapon for a ruckman,  his marks.

Our midfield is not even 2nd best...  more like equal 5th-ish...  and we will be overtaken by more, soon.

If that’s the case, then we just re-signed Mark Neeld 2.0 for another four years! Uh-oh!

One of the major problems is that our two main defensive players that we spent lots of money on aren't available at the moment and the two incumbents in Frost and Oscar are looking at downgraded expectations as soon as the other two are ready,

It's not a great plan to "buy into" for those two.

Right guys heres the plan. You go out there and get beat up by Buddy and make sure you fill that hole and hold your ground when Buddys bearing down on you at 100 mph, then when we've got these other two guys up and running we're going to f**ck you off to Casey and then more than likely delist you at years end.

Not a great working environment.

How about performing to a standard where it's impossible to drop you or alternatively showing your wares for prospective buyers in the offseason? Some pride in your own performance? These excuses for guys on a few hundred grand are laughable.

Based on this, it would appear Jonesy is staying put on a wing * shudder *

Ironically the problem is that Jonesy does not stay put on the wing!

Issues

1 - Players who had limited preseasons after surgery/turned up overweight were set to play Rnd 1 when they should  have missed JLT to complete their preseason loading then built match conditioning at Casey. Once you start playing games weekday training loads are reduced so its harder to increase your fitness base.

2 -  Key players injured ie Lever, May, Hannan vandenBerg, Smith. Even Stretch/JKH injury have impacted as they are our 2 players most suited to the wing role.

3 - Goody's stubborness. Goody is always talking about dominating at the contest. Don't often hear him talking about spread/running. Played Tyson on the wing last year and has used Jones and Viney in that role this year.  Goody fairly urgently needs to start giving an equal focus to spread/running in our game plan and team selection. How often do we outnumber opposition at the contest only for them to release to a team mate - lets call him, um, Heppell - holding their position in space off the contest? Respect the run Goody!

4 - Very short list of players in form and playing 4 consistent quarters.

Some positives..

We need more small nimble types and running players. Lockhart has impressed in the ones, Chandler looked assured and clean v Box Hill - outplayed his draft profiles, Bedford and Jordan too  seemed comfortable at VFL Senior Level.  Spargo had a poor start  to season but is still a second year player and we've seen what his best is.

May and Lever are a vast improvement on Oscar Mac and Frost. Petty reads play beautfully, is still developing game and body, had poor game against Box Hill, admittedly on tough day to be a Casey defender. Hannan and Smith will give a better balance to our 22.

Both Frost and Oscar have had enough time in the system to know the basics of positioning. Presume they've been told this week in no uncertain terms that its nothing fancy and play on corridor back shoulder.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
