Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I don't think so.

The best offer Carlton made was their 2020 2nd (30+) and 3rd round(50+) picks.  An insult really.  Useless picks to GCS in 2020 as it is highly compromised.

Also, if Carlton made the same offer to Martin next year when he is an FA, GCS would get a first or mid first round pick eg 2/3 or 10 as an FA comp pick.  It is a similar situation with us and May last year - we had to give a higher trade than the market warranted because GCS would have had pick 2 this year as an FA comp pick.

I thought GCS's starting request of pick 9 and for 15 and Martin plus other bits was reasonable.  Sydney would probably have taken 15 + bits and pieces for Papley.  Carlton tried to shaft GCS and missed out on both players.  They could also have had Butler with a late pick but missed out on him too because they were busy trying to shaft GCS.

They may get Martin in the PSD by default but their trading reputation is shot.  Not sure players and their managers will be so quick to nominate them.  Destination club?  Doubt it!

GCS may lose Martin for zip but they have taken a stand against offers that are insulting ala Carlton's for Martin.  Good on them.

Yeah fair enough, I didn’t follow what Carlton were offering to closely. But it just seemed like a trade that should have been done easily enough and if GC didn’t have those extra picks they wouldn’t have been as fussy.

Martin has the option of going into the National Draft and picked up by the first bidder which won't be Carlton.

If he goes into the PSD and GCS take draft him he will have two choices:

  • Sign for two years (the minimum term) and then ask to be traded next year.
  • Not sign, sit out a year and nominate the club of his choice in 2020.  GCS get zip.

He is probably better off signing a one-year deal with GCS and leave as an FA next year, even if he plays the year in the NEAFL.

GCS seem up for a fight and I reckon they will bid for him in the PSD - they have nothing to lose.

I get your point, but as clubs say, we have to back ourselves to make him happy. We have to create an environment that he is happy. Carlton have shown themselves to be ruthless, both in what they are doing with Martin and what they did in taking Nick Stevens in the same circumstances.

I am not sure that you succeed in this world by being the nice guys.

The Bombers kept Daniher against his wishes. The Swans did the same with Papley.

Silvagni had the chance to do a fair deal and didn't, presumably to steal the player from the basket case, bottom club, that has just received AFL help. I am not sure the AFL would be happy if this is done to the Suns, especially by a side that has about 5 number one picks on their list already.

I think the AFL would be happier if we took him, so a bad precedent is not set.

Some on here want us to grow balls, now might be the time.

not only can't lose what you've already lost, plus will gain in 12 months time via compo pick

if he sooks it up he can play neafl all year

he sits it out at his own peril - no contract - loss of form etc (mccartney never recovered)

suns can send a strong message

Didn’t Luke Ball do just that to get to Collingwood? Ball should have been charged by the AFL at the time but they looked the other way. SEN talked to his manager this afternoon and he said MFC had already been in contact but Martin wants Carlton. He will put a ridiculous price on his head to scare us away but doesn’t that mean Carlton has to pay that price?

They dont actually have to pay him that, but if he nominates an amount, it automatically goes against the salary cap of his drafting club. So in a way they will pay it or just lose that extra money to the ether.

AFL should definitely make sure they cant play funny bastards by saying 2 million over 2 year then adding another 2 years later on at only 200k per year, making up the original (rumored) contract price. The offer would be well know by AFLHQ and should be the basis of any nominated price for Martin.

If the statements in this thread are correct about MFC having already asked after Martin, it say to me that we are doing what is best for the club and not worrying how other teams will see us. I love this attitude.

I say if he fits our cap at 600k per year we take him. Statement time.... will also make a few players think twice before bailing on weaker clubs, which is long overdue despite what happened with Nick Stevens. Players cannot have all the power.

Take him Dees.

And that's his choice - but just like any draftee, he goes to whichever club selects him.

If he wants to behave like a free agent, he needs to earn that right through another contract with GCS.  If he wants to enter the draft he can:

a) Go to the club that selects him.

b) Play a couple of years in the local leagues, then try again.

I'm not just saying this as a Melbourne supporter - it is akin to draft tampering to attempt to scare away other clubs.  The integrity of the draft depends upon honest engagement with the process.

Yeah, I agree with your post mr 39. Where’s the advantage in being a free agent, if you can get to the club you want, simply by refusing to sign a new contract with your current club?

No they can't be traded.

We should be taking him with pick 2 in the PSD. Gold Coast won't take someone who has refused to sign a contract and walked out and moved to Victoria.

If he is set on Carlton, then we hold them over a barrel and make them compensate us for not taking him ahead of them. We are in a win-win situation here. We either land a good footballer who fits our needs for no trade cost, or we negotiate compensation with Carlton for not taking him.

If the club doesn't stand firm and make the most of an advantageous position, then nothing has changed and we're still a weak feeder club. Surely we've grown some balls now?!

I say we bend them over a barrell.

I will be filthy with our club if they allow him to walk freely to the blues with out asking for something in return.

Even if we are not interested, we can't let oppourtunites to swap some picks in draft order to slip. Or do we want to be known as the doormats of the AFL, show some fair dinkum sack Dees.

Time to show us supporters you mean business Perty, stamp your authority on the joint.

If our Football Dept think he will improve the team, and his contract demands will not cost us other required players, it would be negligent to let him slip through to Carlscum.

It would also be so typically Melbourne to be the Gentleman and let him go wherever he chooses, BUT if he really was getting $600k+ p.a from the Blues, is he actually worth that? I've never seen anything from him other than "could be" footy.

This would be so Melbourne, time for an attitude change

On SEN this arvo Martins manager admitted MFC had made enquires but the manager said Martin was not interested and was determined to get to the Blues so if you add that to his inflated salary demands I can see why we might move on. Not sure what hard ball pick exchange deals we could do with the Blues to make them earn this freebie.

Dees have a month to keep pestering Martin and his management. Martin currently in Europe, so Dover is handling everything and currently batting away any other offers. Carlton offer is generous and a lot of groundwork already done.

If the path to Carlton starts to look unlikely, he’ll have to switch tact, but no surprises with what’s been said so far. If Melbourne are genuinely keen they’ll persist.

Of course we can, right up to nat draft night. Doesn't have to be completely skewed, just nicely in our favour. Eg. Our current 4th rounder + 2020 2nd round pick from Freo for their 2020 1st rounder. They can back themselves to improve next year.

We have sent a clear message that we are not interested. We need to get around to talking to other top draft picks. then when the PSD draft comes along and they ask who we want , we then snag the ba@@@@d. his overall price maybe high we could be pay most of the same amount for an ordinary player, so spend the extra if we can and get him. we have two years to use him and convert him. we could possibly even trade him next year to the blues for a 1st or 2nd round pick or they have to wait for another possible psd draft a year later. an extra $100k to snag another top draft pick next year seems a reasonable gamble especially considering we dont have a first round pick next year.

Easy pass for mine.

He clearly has little ambition (aspires to join Carlton ffs) beyond earning more cash, and has minimal understanding of how he can join or contribute to a successful team.
I suspect he’s loath to consider us because with Langdon, Fritz etc... he might have to work hard to justify the bickies he wants.

next.

The sweet irony is that if we were in Carlton and Martin’s side of the court and another club were looking to screw us with a pick before ours in the PSD, this forum would be completely enraged.

I don’t mind either way if we get him or not but I do like the idea of causing a few waves.

I dont think this is about screwing anyone this is about players entering into the draft and getting selected. we make no bones on the national draft when we have our eye on someone but others have picks before us. This is the same thing. Do a deal in the trading period or go into the draft and take your chances like everyone else. if anyone is getting screwed i think its the suns by Carlton...

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
