Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

What to do with Nathan Jones

If you're Nathan Jones i'm not sure why you wouldn't take the 260k and hope the extra money that is opened up can help bring a Brad Hill in so you get one last chance at a Premiership

The MFC mentality is self preservation.....

when Nathan Jones retires he deserves to take his place with the greats of the Melbourne Football Club. His loyalty to the club and his extraordinary resilience in playing to a high standard through a period where the team he was running out with was barely AFL standard cannot be denied. If he had played in a better team he would be a much more highly regarded goal kicking inside mid.

in 2019 its hard to find a spot for him. Not all great mids can successfully extend their career by moving to wing or half forward or half back. His lack of pace means the wing is out, and that also pretty much rules him out as a small forward or back.  But then again Goody has found space for Tyson, Lewis and Jones on the wing so maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

I think club'll let him play on next year if he wants to, and he most likely does. For mine its not the best football decision but a forced retirement would be messy.  The question is will Goody tell him he might play VFL a la Lewis this year? We need more speed and ball carriers and Jones looms as an obvious primary casualty of that. Athletes are not always the best judge of when their time is up.

Look, I value Nate Jones and respect the bloke. But he's never been more than just a good footballer. Having him amongst the club's greats on the basis on loyalty alone, sure, but if he's classified as one of the club's "greats" well that epitomises how [censored] we've been. No offense Jonsey.

Agreed the JMac decision was appalling.

But unfortunately many people don't know when to retire gracefully. The AFL is littered with them.  But on 6 figure sums I don't blame them for not wanting the party to end.

The club is paid to be professional and move forward. Ask the Hawks about sentimentality.

It still should be done with grace and respect of course.

Just that someone should be having the ' conversation'.

Spot on, I think with Lewis and Cross in the past we've shown we're prepared to have that conversation plus both of those spent time in the reserves, so we back it up too. I still think we should give Jones another year at a low base, but at the same rate it'll be his last.

I’d be disgusted if we are low balling our captain and a champion who has stood by this rabble of a club for all these years. I think one year is fair, but FFS the last thing we need right now is media noise about our own captain being unhappy with his contract offer. Get it sorted fast. This [censored] would never happen under Jackson.

To think how much money we have payed absolute garbage players over the years... no wonder Jones is annoyed. Deserves a hell of a lot better.

This season truly can’t end soon enough.

I’m sure he’s done extremely well from MFC. Far more than he would have earned at a “successful” club by being just a good ordinary player. He’s not going to get any better next year. No point throwing scarce dollars his way to fund his superannuation. Pay him his current worth or take the Ox’s advice.

I just wonder what the players think about May coming in for $800k after his pre season/season issues? Wonder if it’s upset a few at the club. I kind of thought early last year the same thing with Lever. Would have to affect the culture?

I truly can’t match this outrage based on the whole fact he’s just not that good. He’s not Scott Pendlebury. He’s never even won any form of recognition outside this club (no AA). He’d be in the bottom 4 of captains in the league (along with his co captain)

The important thing with Nathan Jones, for mine, is that the club don't treat him in the manner which we treated another great servant, James McDonald. I always felt that set the club back. Regardless of what decision is made re next year, he simply should not be lost to the club but embraced as one of our greatest ever clubmen.

The James McDonald issue was made infinitely worse by Chris Connolly ‘accidentally’ telling McDonald he was finished before Dean Bailey was able to speak with him.

People are acting like he's demanded 800k. Not like Demonland to overreact I guess...

How about we just treat him well and let the bloke finish his career, whether it's 2019 or 2020, with the support of the fans who seem to have forgotten that for a decade he was the only thing we could trust about the club.

Honestly think there's a Melbourne supporter condition that seems to manifest itself in delighting in our bad times, wanting us to fail so they can have the 'I told you so' moment and trying to rip down anyone who has shown heart for the club, while simultaneously decrying our lack of 'heart and soul'.

There was an article in The Age about 5 years ago. I can’t  remember who wrote but said Jones and Ablett were the best two captains in the league. We know what Ablett’s captaincy was like at GC. Jones was different and hasn’t behaved like a prize [censored] but it appears the writer was taking the pizz.

Have to wonder who leaked the story...

If the deal has incentives it's fair based on this year's form. In a way he's lucky that there is little coming through the VFL to replace him. If he plays ten games he'll probably make around $350k.

Make no mistake this offer and the way we treated James Mac are chalk and cheese

I can’t believe some of the reactions on here.

Whorethorn do it every year. We must do the same. We hang on to players too long so often. It is one of the reasons why we don’t get better.

Jones has had a long career as a “good” footballer, tough as nails but not elite.

He has done himself proud. But it is almost over. FFS we are in 17th spot and he has been part of it.

1 year deals from now on with incentives

Don’t back down MFC

At least Chunk busts a nut and puts his body on the line each week. Actually, that's kinda how Barnaby got himself into trouble in Canberra...

Not sure what the issue is, he wouldn’t have gotten close to the money he has gotten from MFC at any other club. His been a B grader mid on A grade money.

Now is the time we need him to take a sacrifice to help get our list back in order.

Will be interesting to now see how really loyal he is.

Maybe we could trade him to Sydney with our 3rd or 4th round pick to play with Zak, in return for Sam Reid. Key forward issue solved, if he gets on the park.

Good move...

Trade a durable club legend for a player who like his brother (Collingwood variety) struggles to get on the park.

unfortunately this has been brewing for some time

nate was VERY well rewarded for a long time; he knew that at some point that tap was going to be turned off

it's no doubt a shock to him that the well is as dry as it is...but if he wants to play afl next year this honestly might be his best chance

there's no doubt that it'll be negotiated to have a larger base with incentives

but now he knows where he fits in our plans - pretty much on the other side of divide

Wow. Only on Demonland could a player on his last legs at the age of 31 be valued higher than 27 old key forward that's played 18 games this season and kicked 25 goals. And that's not even mentioning the 3rd or 4th round pick needed to get it done. Hawthorn had no issue trading Sam Mitchell or Lewis... Why should we?

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

    HIBERNATING by KC from Casey

They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
