Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Taylor picks (After first round).

I have not included 2018 as too early to tell. At best we can say he has picked 7 good out of 24, but that being said those 7 , it includes Joel Smith, Tim Smith and Fritsch which in reality the judges probably still out on.

We could probably say comfortably that 4 out of 24 have been strong picks.

When we have only brought in 4 decent players via the draft over 5 years (outside of first rounders) it makes you wonder how we can field a quality side.

2013

JKH - Miss Pick
Hunt - Good Pick
Clisby - Miss Pick
Harmes - Good Pick
King - Miss Pick
Georgiou - Miss Pick

2014
ANB - Miss Pick
Stretch - Good Pick
VDB - Miss Pick
White - Miss Pick

2015
King - Miss Pick
Hulett - Miss Pick
Wagner - Miss Pick
Michie - Miss Pick
Joel Smith - Good Pick

2016
Hannan - Good Pick
Johnstone - Miss Pick
Filipovic - Miss Pick
Tim Smith - Good Pick
Keity - To Be Decided

2017
Spargo - Miss Pick
Fritsch - Good Pick
Petty - Miss Pick
Baker - Miss Pick

Honestly it’s pretty damning, from 5 years of picks we can only comfortably say 1 pick (Harmes) is a walk up start in our 22.

Yeah that does seem very grim actually. Part of it might be development though. We don't have a smidgen of the development prowess of a Hawthorn.

This is the best thread ever!

But I'm afraid that with Taylor already going down it'll only be a week or so before we run out of fresh supplies - and I'm not sure how long our former employee back-up stocks can tide us over. Can we bring in some work experience kids to blame as a stop-gap solution, or is that like some labour rights breach?

It’s clear Goodwin has no idea what to do. The game plan from last year has been picked apart by the opposition and the players can’t implement what he wants.

This manic hand pass game has to stop. Hawthorn won 3 premierships in a row by chipping the ball around by foot at the G. Why couldn’t we mimic their game style?

We need to action what Collingwood and richmond did with their assistant coaches. Clear the decks and get new ideas into the club.

Im still in shock that the season is over in April

So we need to implement a Hawthorn chip-pass style game-plan and also do away with following Richmond's manic premiership winning style, except for their manic example of getting rid of all their coaching assistants?

There is a place for a manic style play but not 100% of the time. Richmond are able to control the pace

When PJ came in one of the things he said was that we needed some experience at the club.

The FD at the time was very young in football terms.

Roos came in with George Stone for starters...

Unfortunately the balance has gone back, we lack real experience.

I think if Goodwin is to stay on then it's time for Mahoney to move on.

We need a Balme/Walsh figure at the club to overview and make sure we're making the right calls.

I don't think either of those 2 are going anywhere, so who is around?

Gubby? hate the suggestion but he is a good operator.

We need to get nasty and he might just be the man for the job...

Have been saying this for over a year and posted similar several times this week.

Mahoney, Goodwin and most of our assistant coaches have only one stint in their current jobs.  Those stints have been for just a few years while there has been constant improvement.  Collectively they have little experience managing in turbulent times.  Roos and PJ covered that in recent years.

No organisation can carry that much inexperience in one department.

Unfortunatley, I can't see us getting a Balme type person ie GM Football as that is the position Mahoney was promoted to some years ago with Daniel Mc Pherson as the Football Manager.

They just have to learn on the job and we hope that they get it sorted quickly ?

Something stinks.  I dont know how sacking people will fix the problem, but from the outside, it looks like something has gone really off the rails.  We can sack the lot of them, but unless we find and address what is really going wrong, we are simply swapping deck chairs.  How do we go from chocolates to boiled lollies so fast?

We can't afford that any longer...

Agree.

But doubt Pert will get rid of Mahoney bring someone in over the top of him for a Balme type even tho that is what we need.

Staff changes, if they happen will be below Mahoney and Goodwin.  But that will be next year, if they  happen.  So we are dependent on Mahoney and Goodwin et al to get us out of this mess this year.

Whether we can afford it or not that is all we have.

I like your suggestion of Gubby.  But he has been at he Saints for only six months.  Can he be enticed away?  Were he and Pert mates at the Pies?

As an aside, Lethlean (as GM Football ie Mahoney's equivalent) has done a great job at the Saints.  Overhauled list management, changed assistant coaches brought in specialist coaches:  Slater, Brereton.  Can't really see Mahoney doing similar as most coaching/football staff have been appointed during his watch.

This is where Pert will earn his money, there's a review coming.

Maybe Gubby connection from the Fitzroy days...

I think Mahoney will move on to develop his skills in business management after this season anyway.

Rumors there was a club who’ve got up to 15 players claiming mental health issues so they don’t get drug tested. The issue is that the remaining players are now getting tested all the time and has caused a rift in the group.

Strangley, we have fallen completely off the map this year.

Do I put 2 and 2 together???

Starting to think this might be us.  How else do you go from a Prelim to the worst team in the comp and a total rabble?

Agreed - there is definitely something NQR about the place at the moment.  I have never seen so many very good, good and capable players so desperately out of form and confidence at the same time.

There will definitely be an end of season review and, in my opinion anyway, I hope it's led by someone from outside of the club.

When these reviews take place, there's rarely mass sackings as the outcome, but it usually comes down to communication and role definitions within the club as a whole.

Last year was not a one-off or a fluke as some have been spruiking; it was the gradual progression that has been building since 2014.  We have gone from:

2014: 4 wins

2015: 7 wins

2016: 10 wins

2017: 12 wins

2018: 14 wins (+ 2 finals)

To then go 1 and 5 says that something significant has occurred behind the scenes that we haven't got wind of yet.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
