Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Haven't read the first 7 pages so forgive me if repeating..

Did I just read someone call Petracca fat boy? Really? The kid is in unbelievable nick! Does he cover the ground well? No, but fat implies something else entirely which I just don't agree with. We all wish he got the ball more, clearly, but when he was around the ball he was consistently dangerous. Staggered people are calling for him to be dropped. There were a thousand worse players than him...

No idea what they see in Hore. ANB is ANB and I struggle with him. Jones was just bloody awful and if keeps that up then his days are numbered. Frost and Omac were very ordinary, can't wait for May and Lever to come in. Viney clearly underdone, shouldn't have been out there.

Overall I think it's pretty obvious by the results over the weekend that the shorter pre-season has a real impact, and it is wholly unsurprising we were caught out. Let's not overreact too soon..

.... did you see the bombers playing GWS? They are no guarantee of beating the saints this week!

Sydney were terrible for 80% of the game against the doggies on Sat night as well. Lets wait until we are 1-1 or 0-2 after this weekend before looking too far ahead!

Outs

Spargo, Oscar, Both dreadful !  Viney ( is not fit ) Hunt is a turnover king, ANB Frontrunner, Hore is Depth, Frost was average

In

May, Kolo, Pruess, and maybe Stretch

I would think 3-4 Changes but if we play as insipidly as last week I can see the Axe swinging wildly!

I personally don't see us making many changes this week, and this is in keeping with Goodwin's MO.

If there were players who were 'underdone' for Round 1, then hopefully we can see them primed and ready for Round 2... this means VINEY, JONES, McDONALD, OLIVER and HARMES will hopefully start to resemble themselves.

- MAY comes in for FROST.

- KK needs another run in the seconds to get up some match fitness.

 - I'm not yet convinced on HORE, but he didn't disgrace himself on Saturday and has shown some promise.  PETTY is a good young prospect, but he was played far too early last year and I don't want to see us make the same mistake twice (especially with the pressure vs Geelong, in Geelong on a Saturday night)

- STRETCH is vanilla, but he does have the ability to lower his eyes when kicking, so he may improve our delivery forward of center.  If he comes in, SPARROW may make room following a solid, but not spectacular debut.  SPARROW stays IMHO.

- I'm a SPARGO fan.  Though out of form, he is a pure footballer with an excellent brain, intuition and poise in traffic.  He plays.

- MAX got beaten up and beaten on the field on Saturday.  Goodwin insisted that the physical pressure is nothing new... well, if that's true, then he stays solo for Round 2.  We were killed for pace on the weekend and the inclusion of PREUSS does little to improve that.

- WAGNER but he has some pace and find the right spots; big improvement on his brother's output.  Has some potential and was far from our worst.

- HUNT is not a small forward.  Never has been, never will be.  Either needs to play at half-back or wing, or at Casey.

- LEWIS is well and truly past his best as a player and is borderline best 22.  If fit however, his leadership and experience would have been valuable on the field now that the runners are so restricted.  We missed him on Saturday and we'll miss him in Geelong.  In addition, we really missed AVB and HANNAN.  HANNAN's pace and AVB physicality were vital in the closing rounds and finals of 2018.

CP 136 metres gained - Salem 741 metres gained.......

Love Trac but unbelievable nick......Common! (He averaged 340 metres gained last season.)'

Hopefully your right about the shorter pre-season & we will be flying in a few weeks.......

Frost( 192cm) is listed as only marginally shorter than Weidemann ( 193cm) and has a body and agility far better suited to pinch hitting in the ruck.

May comes in for anyone, and plays in defense, whilst Frost relieves Max in the ruck and allows Weidemann to stay up forward and avoid heavy body collisions in the ruck.

Club website has Frost at 194 and Weid 195.

Didn't we try Frost in the ruck a couple of years ago with poor results? Also tried him forward, which was worse.

Our defenders weren't good on Saturday, but they weren't the major problem. The lack of forward and midfield pressure was where we came undone.

It's remarkable how so may posters don't seem to get this fact. But there you go.

May will come in for Frost. Absolute certainty. If there are no injuries Frost will struggle to get another game this season i'm afraid.Frankly i'm pizzed off at May for his stupidity. We needed him round one.

People know my views on Omac so no need to rehash them. Except to repeat that Goodwin knows a great deal more about footy than posters on DL and he will pick Omac ahead of Frost (and won't drop him this season). So it is safe to assume he rates OMac more highly than Frost, which will do me.

Those that get discombobulated by Omac being in the team side best work out a way to deal with it for the sake of their own well being. He is a lock for the rest of the season (and his career). Even after Lever comes back.

The other defender who will come under scrutiny is Hunt. Its all well and good to focus on Omac and Frost (who was poor i will concede) but he does not butcher the ball like Hunt. His first four kicks were turnovers.  A woeful kick. I doubt he'll be dropped but he is lucky we have so many out at the moment.

Talk about Weed getting dropped for Keilty is just plain crazy. Won't happen.

KK might be chance to come in, but really i think the likely scenario is just the one change - May for frost.

Big call, mate,  When Lever was fit last year we only played two tall backs, which was Lever and O Mac.  In the game against the Dogs, for example, we had Jetta, Hibberd and Lewis down back with Gus as well (which obviously changed as the year went on.)

Whose to say that, when Lever is fit again, they won't go with May and Lever, with Hibberd, Jetta, Lewis and, say, Salem, as the other guys down back?  It's a huge call to suggest Oscar is a lock for the rest of his career based on the, admittedly small, sample size we've seen from last year.

Agree that he is ahead of Frost, though.

I have been right about Omac's position in the team thus far. Time will surely tell if that remains the case.

Of course.  I'm not saying it won't happen, but we only ever seem to go with two tall backs.  Even last year, when Frost was available, we didn't play him with Lever or Oscar (not from memory anyway.)  Even the previous week (against the Crows in 2018) it was the same - Oscar and Lever, with Hibberd, Jetta, Lewis and Vince.

My money is on that being the same, with May and Lever, by mid year.  But as you say, time will tell.

This...

There is no chance there will be 4+ changes to the team.

Fair points.

But Lever won't play big. So to speak.

Most sides will play a second ruck against the dees this year and therefore will often have two bigs up forward. Omac and May will take the bigs - and Lever will go back to his floating intercept role.

Picket Fence says

I'm not  a Spargo fan. He is a slow plodder, with low skills particularly kicking skills and just too small. He goes back to Casey. Question, how many other teams would be get a game at??

2 Clayton's, 0 Brayshaw's.

After hearing the Casey reviews and reflecting on the game some more I'm actually more likely to stick with Hore and hope he can pick up the tempo. Change both the key defenders. And make at least one change to the half forwards.

The other thought I keep coming back to is what to do with Viney. If he isn't 100% cherry ripe I'd rather he miss a couple of weeks. There's just too great a difference between his best football and when he's not healthy.

Phew! Thanks for that! I completely missed the two Olivers in your side. Maybe I need new glasses. Although wouldn't it be nice if we did have two Olivers in the side. How far along are we with human cloning?

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
