Casey v Box Hill - Practice Game on Sunday

Casey came away with a well fought win today. It was hot and windy and by the start of the 4th quarter everyone was cooked but we held on against the wind to finish well. Our inside 50's and shots on goal were pretty terrible and we got hurt on the rebound a lot which will need work throughout the year. We were in control most of the day and should've won by a lot more.

Final Score Casey 10 - 17 - 77 to Box Hill 10 - 6 - 66

Melbourne Listed Players (Be warned I wasn't in my normal viewing place so didn't have the best view of the ground and I was focusing on Dec most of the game):

Stretch: Good attack on the ball and did well on the inside
Kolodjashnij: Took a little while to get into the game, but reads the ball well off half back and has great skills. Could see him coming into the Seniors pretty soon.
Lockhart: An average game by Jay's standards but did his usual good work
Maynard: Didn't notice him a lot but he was inside all day and its hard to tell with loads of players around the ball who is doing well or not
Bradtke: The surprise for mine. Was very quiet the first half but took some good grabs and kicked a goal in the second
Bedford: Again didn't really notice him but did a couple of nice things out of the back pocket
Preuss: Was a monster in the ruck around stoppages, but did nothing of note around the ground. Talking to him after the game he was running around sore
J. Wagner: Solid game but made mistakes with the ball, his attack and aggression was great though
Petty: Great game as the main key defensive peg with some good overhead grabs and spoils until he rolled his ankle in the last quarter
Baker: I think he is going to be a good winger, runs hard and fast and hits the ball well. Some sloppy disposals though.
Keilty: Best forward on the ground by a mile. Jumped well at the ball, took a few strong marks and if not he always bought it too ground. Did some good work at ground level too. Didn't do much Ruck work as Pruess probably did 80-90%. Was stuffed in the last quarter as he didn't come off the ground for the whole 2nd and 3rd quarters but I really liked his game. I am being biased but he played well.

Did I miss anyone?

Also Jade Rawlings is a great coach. I listened to the 3/4 time huddle and his instructions to the boys were well given and you could see the affect it had in the last quarter to enable us to hang on for the win.

Oh I forgot Jordan and Chandler.

Chandler was good, I kept having to look at the name sheet because I kept forgetting who he was but he had some good moments.
Jordan was quiet but did okay as well.

Thanks Drunken, great report......

so in your opinion Dec & Preuss up for selection round 2?

Although, I suspect there wont be any changes after Goodwin suggested for all the supporters 'not to overreact'

Pruess, no. Like I said he was good in the ruck but did nothing else. Keilty maybe, here’s hoping.

Not sure with Baker. Could be close to a debut but I’ve got no idea haha

Rolled ankle usually heals within hours or a day or two?

Bring him straight in for Weid.

Or why not have both? 3 marking targets + small forward & flanks. Geelongs defence is their biggest asset, we'll need players who can take marks or bring it to ground inside 50. I know we have to stem the flow of outside run from defence, but that really should be covered by having rabidly defensive small forwards and a midfielder or two.

Pretty sure Weid can take ball at highest point which means overhead, so sick of the negativity many of you portray week in week in - it’s R1 ppl, get over it! Weid has few opportunities and is still learning the craft - was LEAST of our prob yesterday!

ANB slotts goal in first we prob run away with it - instead Port played out of their skin and we got caught running on the spot, it happens!

This is what I have been told by people within the club with much better football analysis skills than me. Apparently Weid can take a mark at the highest point and is a tall player with a leap. This, therefore, theoretically, makes him a unique forward who can break modern zones.

I don't see it.

Missed Weid's big contested clunk? Sam was bad in the ruck, mostly at boundary stoppages, which is somewhat a surprise because he's usually ok in the ruck. Follows up at ground level and around the ground does ok.

If you remember the Richmond JLT game Keilty was good in centre bounces but also beaten by a ruck who grabbed it from a throw in and kicked a goal.

According to the website Keilty is 194/94kg, Weid is 195/97kg. Who knows how accurate those numbers are but I'm not convinced there's much difference.

Keilty might be a bit more effective in the ruck but I'm not expecting miracles up forward from him, he didn't do a heap up forward against the Lions.

Realistically swapping Weid for Keilty would be getting a similar player without the upside. I've got no interest in that. Preuss for a big contested body would at least mix things up. Or adding Keilty alongside Weid, playing Tracc in the midfield and T mc on the wing for part of the game and changing the forward mix. Or waiting until Tim Smith is back soon and getting that 3rd tall versatile and defensive forward in the mix.

DeeSpencer a very measured and thoughtful response. I would expect nothing less from you.

Keilty has demonstrated to me time and time again he is a better contested mark than Weid. At VFL level only but until we have to give a game how do we know otherwise?

Keilty is better in the ruck from what I have seen also.

I am not blind or biased Wied is a much better player when the ball hits the ground but that is not what he is there to do. We have players to rove the football, this is not Weid's role, despite being good at it.

I once rolled an ankle and spent two weeks on crutches. Had to have my boot cut off as I had swelling that was the size of a tennis ball on my ankle.

Hope your diagnosis is right though!

Not to fuel the fire but I actually think Weid is a better mark then Dec is. At this stage they wont be dropping Sammy for Dec. Could we play 3 tall forwards with Max and Dec rotating through the Ruck?

I agree. If other teams like Richmond go small in the forward line, opposition backlines respond. If we play teams who go other way we expose them. You can't defend the best forward line with small backman and then when the trend changes you need have big gorillas to go with them..

Thanks Drunk'n

I think at present Keilty offers more than Preuss even if it as an off the bench role giving Max and the two key forwards a rest.

The problem with that approach is what does playing the extra tall do to your midfield rotations.

I definitely think Keilty should have played against Port with their dual big man approach. Not sure it's needed against Geelong but perhaps time to try a new strategy for the medium term.

For Preuss to be considered he needs to start impacting around the ground and up forward.

As I've mentioned a few times the forecast for next week's game is 16 degrees and windy so might not be  a night for the talls.

Thanks @Drunkn167 great report.

I remember watching a training run at the Gabba years ago and being so impressed with Rawlings work with the backline players.

Really hands on and very detailed with the players. I hope the club can hang on to him and feel like our senior backline squad are missing his coaching.

When I've seen Keilty play forward at VFL level he's only been hit and miss.

He got drafted on the back of good defensive play including taking some nice marks but it's always easier to take marks as a defender than a forward. Especially with some of the delivery at Casey - both our players going forward and the opposition bad clubs attacking.

I wouldn't be against Weid going out of the side, he's still yet to look consistently involved in games and his ruck work at throw ins was inexcusable, I'm just not sold on it working if it's a straight swap for Dec.

Austin being competitive at VFL level is a great sign. If he can compete and get involved in games he has the skills and athleticism to develop. 2nd quarter was in to the wind right? I always played my best footy at CHF in to the wind, the ball holding up let me lead up and grab it easier!

Kyle Chandler??

Doubt that anyone would seriously suggest Keilty in place of Weid at present. Keilty was used on several occasions as a swing player and has kicked a few clutch goals. If he can do a serviceable job in the ruck he is probably a better choice at present than Preuss if you want to play another tall.

Weid is the future no doubt ... he deserves a run of at least 6 games before any calls are made. His replacement if necessary would be one of the Smiths.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
