Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

If Casey have another practice match next week do any of Jones, Melksham, Viney (depending on how he’s pulled up) get given a run again? I’m not suggesting they should, only curious to see if they need more minutes.

I remember Hannan getting a Round 1 game in 2017 on the back of only one Casey scratch match the week prior to the opener that year.

On the Casey website they have yesterday's match listed as the only practice game.

Hard to believe given the VFL season does not start until April 7. Perhaps the other games are not listed

I might have been thinking this could be a possibility coming into the season but definitely not thinking the above now on his two outings so far against Pies and Lions. He was very good in both.

Cheers DJ,  just had a look at the VFL website. We have matches on the 24th and 30th according to the site.

People you can be sure of one thing about the round 1 team. Both ANB and OMAC will play. Personally I would prefer Frost to OMAC because of Ryder but that won't be the case. If May gets done then both may play.

Also why Jones on the wing. With Garlett and Hannan out couldn't he play forward pocket ? Hunt on the wing.

Any side with Stretch is surely taking the Mickey.

He is so fundamentally flawed at AFL level. He butchers it like we haven't seen since J Grimes. Absolute howlers.

We are meant to be a serious football side now.

It's a shame really, as I find he has no trouble finding the footy and getting to the right spots at AFL level.  He is actually a handy wingman, as his 19 touches, 10 marks on the weekend suggest.  But, as you say, he does turn it over a bit and that takes away his value to the side.  I'd like to think he can clean up that aspect of his game as he could become a good role player for the side.

I'm a fan of the 2 tall defenders and a mid sized who can play a bit taller, like Hore can. I also prefer Frost for his pace over Oscar. I'd be  willing to live with his deficiencies more than Oscars, but I also concede that they will likely stick with Oscar.

same for the forward line. 2 talls in Weid and TMac, plus the mid sized Smith who adds a bit of a mismatch with his pace and leap.

didn't mind the look of Hunt up forward yesterday. leads straight and fast, which draws the eye for the ball carrier, and that should only help our inside 50 delivery. also his pace would make defenders nervous and we need him as another defensive forward option as teams have been strolling out of our F50 far too easily. i'd play Spargo up the ground a bit further where he can use his smarts and skills more, and Hunt closer to goal, where he doesn't have to.

Stretch is no good. turns it over, can only run in straight lines and is slow to take the game on. not what you need from your winger. he is depth only.

I don't think Viney will be there for R1. sounds like an injury setback for him when he was cutting it tight as it was. hopefully i'm wrong, but I also don't want them to take any unnecessary risks with him either. he's too important.

Agree with what you are saying, but it's a combination of both decision making and execution. Both are poor and he really shouldn't be in our AFL side if we are serious this year.

I think that the discussion between Oscar and Frosty will end in a similar way to the Max vs Spencil debate.

Around 2013/2014, there was some debate who would be the heir to Russian's ruck position. I always felt that Spencil, despite his determination, didn't have the basics to be a genuine starting 22 player. He was a trier and cracked in, but lacked the physical gifts. I saw a much higher ceiling on Max and ultimately turned out to be correct.

Sadly, unless Oscar hits the gym (and the refrigerator) and suddenly gains better reflexes, he will always be exposed. Frosty has athleticism to burn but his issue is his disposal and decision making. The latter problems for mine are easier to fix.

See, I sit in the opposite camp - O Mac can read the ball in flight and dispose of it cleanly which makes up for his lack of sheer size

Frost is hopeless when the ball comes in high and his disposal makes Brayshaw look clean with his possession

There's big doubts on Viney, May and Harmes but the hope is they all get over the line. Frost is the May replacement. Vanders and Jones move inside and/or Salem mid and Hunt/Stretch come in for Viney and Harmes if needed you'd think.

I have concerns with Oscar, ANB, Hore and J Smith as well but when it comes to the final side I think they'll go closest to what worked for us last year. You could go with Frost, C Wagner and Stretch instead but is that any better? Roll the dice on kids?

From the Eagles game last year it's out Tyson (Fritsch), Hannan (J Smith forward), Smith as a defender (Hore) and Frost (May).

Agree with this.  Unfortunately despite his good attributes - high effort, endurance, great clubman - he has major deficiencies.   He doesn't crack in, he takes circular approaches to the football and to his opponent so he very rarely ever bodylines the ball or the man to put himself in danger.  He is actually one of the softest players in the side.  He is poor overhead and not a one touch footballer or a good user by foot.  What he does OK is create an outnumber to be able to lock the ball in  He is clearly instructed to take on a under 12s approach whereby he just chases the ball to add number to the contest and he does that very well to lock the ball in.  This is where his tackle stats come from.  Unfortunately, the Eagles cruelly exposed this tactic in the first quarter of the preliminary final.

Excellent post, some of his defensive gut running is brilliant, but some of it is him running passed a team mate who should be manning their own man and creating 2 on 1 that leaves a free guy. The beauty of Richmond's defensive work is every forward chases and pressures and creates turnover chances by covering all the opponents. ANB  also doesn't nail enough tackles, he has to stick them to be at his best defensively.

I think his work rate to get the ball is a little underappreciated but yeah he's not strong at the contest and doesn't use it well. Maybe a silver lining is that back with a more familiar team around him his decision making becomes easier. The way he spins round in circles to evade isn't a good thing but it is predictable for team mates. His more experienced team mates probably read what he'll do faster than some of the guys he played with this preseason

Some good commentary here and then there's Picket Fence!

Anyway, Stretch has a few fundamental flaws. When he is running with the ball it sways it from side to side in his hands like a metronome. Must impact his ball drop. As previously pointed out he only runs in straight lines as well.

His good mate ANB also struggles with his disposal and taking the ball cleanly. Poor overhead and his tackles don't stick..

These are two important outside runners. We need KK to come good or re-train Hunt.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
