Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Best case scenario with injuries and suspensions.

FB: Jetta May Hibberd

HB: Lewis Frost Salem

Centre: Brayshaw Oliver Jones

HF: Petracca Weideman Fritsch

FF: Melksham T. McDonald vandenBerg

Foll: Gawn Viney Harmes

Int: Hunt J. Smith Stretch Spargo

Overall a pretty strong side on paper, but can’t afford any more injuries.

The coaches will probably go with O. McDonald over Frost, I’d go with Frost because we are a slow team and need all the pace we can get.

ANB will also probably play even though he shouldn’t.

No crumbing forwards is a huge issue, Spargo on a bench even though yesterday he was awful we have no other options with Garlett injured.

Agree, given the circumstances at present. Frosty is a good choice as OMac is virtually useless, missing too many spoils, missing in action and missing his opponent who is mostly always metres ahead and pumping. Big responsibility for Spargo and I am sure that he will be up to it - however, Vanders has many values to add and can screen well for crumbing. It is the forward entry and its anticipation and open spaces that must be utilised - and not just by the Melk. Maybe TMac can hit his straps, as well.

I think we are going to we might lose a few we might expect to win early in the season.

I'm tempering my expectations and will be very happy winning 50% to the half way mark with no injuries.

New personnel, the structural changes due to the 666 rule and having key players underdone might see us stall out of the blocks a bit.

I also see the form of a few in the lower tier as a bit of a worry.

I would love to be wrong.

I agree ANB shouldn't play but probably will.  Too often ANB's turnovers kill momentum but he seems to be a coaches favourite so will play until someone consistently does his defensive role better and who has better disposal.

Tbh I don't think Stretch warrants a game.  Doesn't do enough defensive work and is usually slow in disposing of the ball.  I put this down to not thinking fast enough and maybe lack of confidence in his decision making and his disposal skills.

So I would say ANB lines up instead of Stretch.

Anyone know how Tom Sparrow went yesterday?  Any room for him in round 1?

Tom sparrow will need time at Casey. Probably wont see him until 2nd half of the year.

Very good side.

Agree coaches will go OMac ahead of Frost, ANB instead of Stretch. Spargo has to crumb in the pocket, using Van DB off bench.

Hard to know what to make of JLT form, seemed haphazard and defence pretty loose. Be great to see Viney back in, and Melksham is a key part of forward line functioning properly.

Can’t wait for the 23rd!

Melksham holds our forward line together. He's our best forward.

ANB will be in, hes defence frist which we need. Our game plan is run and gun attack, we need players who want to defence, cause we have players that dont.

anb is a tackler and cracks in hard. I like him in the team. he is a good combination of speed and endurance. I dont care if he doesnt get 20 touches a game. like vandenberg, he is there to harass. plus anb hits the scoreboard too so I don't get the anb hate.

ever since watts, I just wanted guys that would crack in and anb does that. if we want to talk about skill execution let's look at omac and jordan lewis

Don't mind that side in the OP and I too would have Frost over OMac. Only change I would make is I would go ANB over Stretch. Spargo's place in the side also a question mark, but I'm happy for him to have first crack at it.

ANB is an ordinary footballer to put it nicely. He [censored] himself when the heat goes up and just jams the ball onto his foot without any awareness around him. I have also never seen a footballer loses his feet and goes to ground way too often like he does.

He is slow in the mind in terms of football intellectual.

I am also not sure what speed you are talking about? Jayden Hunt has speed, ANB doesn't.

Unfortunately coaches will pick him because he does pressure acts and tackles... the quicker we find an upgraded and better version the sooner he is out of the side.

One thing we need to develop is a settled side.

Early last year and in 2017 we had a revolving two or three players that would go up or down from Casey depending on form.

Unfortunately there seems to be a high chance of that repeating itself over the next few weeks.

Stretch and Hunt haven't really done enough to press for senior selection but many have them in the side. If Viney doesn't play we could even see Maynard again.

Say what you like about the JLT games but none of the fringe really demanded a spot.

Of those first three games I would happily take two wins out of three.

Make no mistake this is our window and we have to make it count.

Agree with this.  Unfortunately despite his good attributes - high effort, endurance, great clubman - he has major deficiencies.   He doesn't crack in, he takes circular approaches to the football and to his opponent so he very rarely ever bodylines the ball or the man to put himself in danger.  He is actually one of the softest players in the side.  He is poor overhead and not a one touch footballer or a good user by foot.  What he does OK is create an outnumber to be able to lock the ball in  He is clearly instructed to take on a under 12s approach whereby he just chases the ball to add number to the contest and he does that very well to lock the ball in.  This is where his tackle stats come from.  Unfortunately, the Eagles cruelly exposed this tactic in the first quarter of the preliminary final.

This is well put and pretty much sums it up perfectly.

Let's be honest - the side that runs out in a fortnight will be very, very similar to the one that got rolled in Perth.  May will be the major inclusion, but I can't see any of the kids getting a run, while KK is still a few weeks away from being in the frame for selection.

That side made a Prelim, so I've got every faith that we can start off the year in good form.

Ins and outs from the high point of our season vs Geelong in the Elim final:

in - J Smith, Hunt

out - Tyson, Hannan

So pretty much the same side as that night and we kind of performed well that night wouldn’t you think?

Let’s not kid ourselves, May ain’t playing. The AFL are stamping bumps out of the game and we’d all be screaming for his suspension if he were still playing for GC and we were coming up against them.

i don't think he's really done anything special, but i get the feeling that hore will definitely be a part of the side

at this stage, may will play as he has not been suspended...same as with goodwin saying that harmes will play, you have to presume he'll play

i'll go with the following changes from the 2018 prelim:

IN: may, hore, fritsch
OUT: frost, hannan, tyson

B: Jetta - May - Hore
HB: Lewis - O Mac - Hibberd
? Salem - Brayshaw - Fritsch
HF: Petracca - T Mac - vandenBerg
F: Melksham - Weideman - Spargo
Foll: Gawn - Oliver - Harmes
I/c: Jones - Viney - Neal-Bullen - J Smith
Emerg: Stretch - Frost - Hunt - Kielty

obviously if may is suspended then frost comes in

i worry about how underdone we look, both from a fitness as well as a cohesiveness point of view

I love ANB & Stretch but two completely different players & I understand, two of the hardest defensively working players on the list. You don't run 15 km's plus every game & 'not work hard enough'....rediculous comment LH. Stretch has come off an 8 month foot injury, so prepared to throw him some confidence rope, while others throw him under the bus. Also would have thought that 10 marks yesterday & the highest on the ground, is testament to his work rate.

Here are the efficiency stats from yesterday for some of the lads pushing for round 1:

ANB 56%, Hunt 62%, Spargo 73%, Stretch 79% & just for some comparisons Brayshaw 62%, Petracca 70% & Fritsch 64%.

ANB & Spargo play for me but not because of efficiency, cos they kick goals & defensive pressure is great, especially ANB. Spargo looked a little out of his depth & may find a round 1 game line ball. Stretch misses but more so because of game time fitness from a long lay off. Hunt probably gets a gig because of one thing....his pace & unfortunately no room for him in the forward line.....more value in defensive if he can hit his targets. Sparrow not yet but at some stage during first half of year.

Love to see JKH come back too, as it looked like he was in for a good year. (77% eff last week)

If Casey have another practice match next week do any of Jones, Melksham, Viney (depending on how he’s pulled up) get given a run again? I’m not suggesting they should, only curious to see if they need more minutes.

I remember Hannan getting a Round 1 game in 2017 on the back of only one Casey scratch match the week prior to the opener that year.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
