Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Collingwood is a brand unto themselves. Well done filth. I envy them. But they HAVE tasted real success in modern football.

Richmond have a very parochial following born out of their actual suburb and identifying withe the Punt Road ideal.

We suffer as we have no real home, no real roots,no real anything anymore. Whenever we've put something out there...I E an item ( emphasis on AN) Of clever marketing or promotional verve...it's left orphaned. Ridiculous. Amateurish really.

If Pert wants 70k ( plus )  two things are required.... Real success, and creating an identity that has meaning.

We are the bastard child of the  'Mcc'.

Unwanted,  unattended, and left outside, wanting, needing,  the 'listless' child.

OK, you are neither negative nor pessimistic. But IMO your POST is both. (especially the notion of filth envy...come on BB you're better than that!) I do agree however that if 70k+ membership is to be achieved, real success is required - MFC needs to win a premiership(s). Identity is subjective. Melbourne's is fine with me and better than it has been for ages. I'm proud to be a loyal, faithful, patient and passionate supporter of the oldest and greatest professional football club in the world. One who is once again verging on ultimate success.

Well said Demonia

We are still evolving from the worst decade of our modern era (Say 60's onward) and many roots have been planted for future long termed and sustained success.

Yes lack of a permanent home is a hang up but it's been strongly identified and plenty of work in planning etc. is underway under Perry's leadership to solve this much desired facility.

Again  to mention membership but over 50,000 this year is going to be about 7,000 more than 2018. Trending UP. About 15% not too shabby and on field  and brand success is crucial in this category.

Lastly and not least it's winning Footy matches and that's the big result the W vs the L.  No givens here but save for the 2018 Prelim Final disaster many of our best wins and indeed our interstate record would be the best in the AFL. And that's not playing Freo Lions or Suns nearly as often as Crows Port or Eagles at their fortresses! Oh and I think if you can remember when we last scored 16 wins in a season it would be a generation it two in our past.

So the BB wipeoff  of virtual irrelevancy is not quite nor near the mark as all OUR indicators are trending a growth and development pattern on an upwards spiral.

BB you are entitled to your opinion but please don't denigrate or rubbish the half glass full devotees who are enjoying the ride from the Neeld days to now where we are on the brink of modern success and development in the toughest National comp in this country and possibly the world.

The aim for ALL clubs is to get enough members so that all games are fully ticketed. With our ground that means we will need approximately 55k members excluding the 15k or so who are also MCC/AFL Members.

Once clubs have enough members most tickets will be reserved seats (like at Subiaco/Adelaide Oval/Kardinia Park) meaning extra revenue for clubs.

The 55k includes all the low revenue memberships including 3 game, interstate and children.

Your idea is good but it probably needs closer to 75k to have an impact.

As an example when as an AFL member I go to Essendon or Collingwood games at the MCG against a low draw club the AFL reserve is reduced dramatically to accommodate the season reserved seats of the home team. Against a high draw club it's fully ticketed so I don't often go to those.

The cost of an Adelaide membership (no GF guarantee) with a reserved seat for 11 home games is $715. How does that compare with the MFC offering?

I’ve lost 2 young kids who just can’t take the beltings and negative media. Hard being a kid at school in red and blue footy colours. Tried hard to convince them we are improving, but don’t believe it myself and am now warming to watching games of teams the kids support. Tough times

That is the reality of life SPC. Lost my daughter to the bombers back in the early 90's and No.1 Grand daughter follows the Cats. Wise move by both, one has enjoyed premierships and the other will at minimum see lots of wins and finals action. The only fool in the family is me.

Yeah I’m not forcing them anymore, just hope to see them enjoy footy again. Pretty lost myself to be honest.

I'll ask again, what is the point of aspiring to 70K members when 2/3 of those will be 3 game members? Far better to have 30K-40K 11 or 22 game members from a $$ and attendance perspective, and to work on keeping those people happy.

Richmond were spruiking 95K members on Wednesday, we have 48K. That is 143K people who had tickets for Wednesday's match, not counting AFL and MCC members and walk ups, and only 72K showed up. It's still a decent crowd, but you can't pretend that the majority of the members of either team are rusted on supporters who are going to take the club forward.

I think we are both hopelessly conflicted SPC. Sadly after 55 years of being in the doldrums we will never find our way up, losing is now part of our DNA. The best we can hope for is the occasional flirt with a final or two when the gods smile on us for a season or two every decade.

Essendon hasn't won a final since 2004.

Why not both?

Within Richmond's 98,000 members there will be their solid core of, say, 50,000 that they would get if they won the spoon.

Adding onto the top helps cashflow, no matter what membership level they're buying, and outwardly sells a message of positivity to fans and sponsors.

But I agree with you that we need to ensure we have a core who show up to games. Hawthorn has 70,000 members but regularly draws terrible crowds. The regular attendances are equally important to whatever revenue we can get from pushing our total membership count upwards.

Essendon has won two premierships since my daughter changed to the bombers and while I have not checked the details they have won one hell of a lot more games than the MFC in that time.

As for my GD you can guarantee she will enjoy watching the cats way more that the Dees over the next decade or two.

Oh a question how many flags have we won in the last 54 years?

I think we will win around the 6-7 games. Hoping for 13th.

Bulldogs and Tigers won the flag the next year from that position.

Would be good to win say the last 4 out of 6 or 7 and go into the off season with some decent memories and confidence in the new gameplan .

Yeah...I'm dreaming !!

I doubt we'll get much traction while so many top liners are out of form or out....but, this bunch has found the belief / form previously.

Looking on the bright side...

If we can get a fit Hannan, AVB & Lever back.  Pruess in for a solid block without re-injury.  Jeffy decides to fire up and work off / with Pruess.  T-mac can start clunking some marks inside 50.  Alot of ifs!

But before that we'll need to get some real gritty guts it out wins behind us...starting this week against the Dawks.

All things considered,  that is a more than decent number.  Forget the 70k talk,  that is for the future and we'll need to play finals consistently to achieve that number.

I like the ambition anyway ... 50k has a nice ring to it with 1 finals appearance since 2006.  Remarkable in fact.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
