I get that SWYL, and its nice to be reminded. I guess my standards and expectations have risen since those dark old days when Trengrove, Grimes, Mitch Clark etc were mostly on the injured list

Also true however that he has been there for a long time and things don't appear to have improved. Injury / player management was one of the main reasons we missed the 2017 finals series. The recent spate of foot injuries meant fresh ideas were needed

No we missed the 2017 Final series because of issues above the shoulders. 

We weren’t mentally prepared. The boys already had it planned before the final games. Remember those comments in the St.kilda game?

but yes you don’t hear it referred to nearly as much as 4-5 years ago

Those comments were just hype. Comments are made between opponents all the time. They only gain prominence when it suits a narrative

Those comments made the players look arrogant and not ready for September atually, and they failed to pull through

As we have seen, you need to have a committed and professional club from top to bottom.  

And IF you don't have... change has to start, at all dept's...  from the top down.

For its's leadership, or lack of... that allows weak cultures to grow.  

 

Diagnosing them... and then doing something about them. takes tough decisions and a stern deetermination.

Agreed. 

I think over the last couple of years our injury list (quantity wise) has been quite good.  

We've just had rotten luck with the quality of players that have been injured.  (Gawn, Jones 2017 + Viney, McDonald, Lever 2018) 

 

And I too believe that Viney's 'bullet-proof' attitude to his injury in 2017 may have contributed to him returning too early.  Viney was desperate to get back into the team in 2017, and we were praising him for his 'tough' 'hard-nosed' attitude.  Sometimes you can play through the pain, other times you need to listen to what the body is telling you.

Regarding Misson; I think he's done a good job.  We're a young, strong and fit team that is playing and running out games with great intensity.  He built the players for finals, and they stood up.  Has been at the club for a long time and it's maybe time for some fresh ideas to come in and for him to find a new challenge.

It is obvious most people do not realize the amount of time it takes to get one person to the elite level of their sport let alone an entire team, at the moment the mfc are light years ahead of where they were prior to Misson joining the club. Injuries will always occur.

Plenty has changed since though and you only have to look at the GC boys comments about Melbourne’s preseason to see standards have risen. 

So a credit to Misso and the club for getting things going in the right direction.

Now we have an opportunity to improve things yet again. I’d be looking at Hawthorn, Coll and Richmond where players are very well defined and explosive athletes. Tigers have had a great run with injury and the Hawks are the masters of rejuvenating players. 

I understand there was a bit of a power struggle when the fitness guys opinions held sway over the medical staff. The medical staff resigned over it.  Might have been egos but nonetheless it was an inauspicious start. It seems to have gone pretty well since then although there are some notable injury SNAFUs with Viney, Trengove, McDonald and Vandenburg.

Yes, a brilliant strategy to get his wife to apply for a prestigious position overseas.

Why is it that when anyone leaves the Club they get canned?  Watts, Hogan and now Mission and that's just off the top of my head.

Misso came to MFC when we were a basket case and we are now an elite organization.  He's part of that. Thanks Misso. Good luck and thanks.

It is not 'attacking', but some of the comments are shall we say a trifle 'unrealistic'

I often wondered why Misso wandered around with a cosh, now i know it was to attack feet of unsuspecting players

McDonald was/is a toe, which is manageable

AVB was a heel, contracted in a game, which was one nobody had seen before, more like a motorcyclists injury

Trengove's was a foot that didn't respond at first to the 'normal' treatment for that injury

So all Misso's fault then?

Not sure that's entirely true but I don't have any inside mail. Wasn't Todd Viney moved in to a role that included overseeing the medical department at the start of last year when he moved away from list management?

The AFL hired Misso's 2IC in Rob Jackson to oversee the umpires when they had an umpire fitness crises, the AFL are usually pretty clever at who they pick from club land. 

The foot injuries have been a struggle but not massively out of line from where the rest of the comp has been, hopefully we're improving that regard. If our players are healthy, strong, fit, running out games and not suffering from the more preventable injuries like soft tissues then I don't think you'd move a guy on for a slightly higher than average foot injury list. And if you did why not do it last year? Carlton poached Andrew Russell from the Hawks, if you wanted to make a change that would've been the one to make.

We are on our way to being respected, feared, and other good things along those lines.

We may have a certain measure of that already.

What a long way we have come.

Misson is part of that journey and can take a healthy slice of credit for dragging us up from the cellar with his knowledge and expertise.

It doesn't just happen. People have to put in. Hard to bag on that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the head coach lay out the broad picture of what he wants fitness wise? Then the fitness guy delivers the specific program that realizes the coach's vision?

I got the feeling Neeld more wanted to 'punish' the playing group than get them fit. The lack of power off the mark might not have been all on Misson.

Conflicts everywhere. To keep playing Trengove, when all could see he was far from ok was just shocking, and i don’t blame Misson for that at all. That didective was coming from elsewhere imo

I know they are flying at the moment but Collingwood have had atrocious injuries over the last 3 years. They are the last club we want to follow.

Yeah a heap of injuries but if you look at their players they are (to use a non technical term) jacked!

Experinced players like Sidebottom suddenly look like this, which is also how Hawks and Tigers look recently.
