Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

AFL app says ‘Reports: Nil’

It was mentioned a few times on the telecast she’d been reported for the late hit in the second quarter. Hopefully the AFL app is correct.

So 'Lucifer', I haven't been keeping a close eye on this at all.

How does the conference system work?

For some reason I thought that conference A teams just play other teams in conference A then the top teams in each conference play off???

...but it seems you just play anyone????

7 round season.

A team in Con A will play the other 4 teams in Con A and 3 of the 5 teams in Conference B

A team in Con B will play the other 4 teams in Con B and 3 of the 5 teams in Con A

Then winner of Con A plays runner up Con B in the semi finals, and vice versa with winner Con B and runner up Con A.

The joke of the conference system is shown in the ladder.

If this was the final round Carlton and Brisbane from Conference B would be playing in the finals (as the top two teams in Conf B).  Yet they are below all of the teams in Conference A.  Its embarrassing.

It was rather dumb of the AFL to put the last two premiers in the same conference and Melbourne as a recognised strong team in that same conference.

The conference system wasn't a terrible way of deciding who plays who. They needed a way to do 7 rounds in to 10 teams.

What they should do now is simply realise the error of their ways and just announce the top 4 will make the finals regardless of conference.

Every team will have played 7 games, the who plays who stuff is always overvalued, you either win games and make finals or you don't.

I've forgotten all the details but broadly, because we have 5 teams in each conference but a 7 round season each team plays others in their conference once (ie 4 games) and some teams in the other conference (ie 3 games).

(Daisy was pushing for a 9 round season so that teams played each other once...fell on deaf ears).

After round 7 the top 2 teams in each conference play off for finals.  I think that means a Conf A team vs a Conf B team and the winners of each game play in the Grand Final.  Right now it seems pretty clear the teams that finish top 2 in Conf A will play in the GF.

Given these limitations it would have made more sense to combine the conference results into one ladder (ala the table in my post above) and the top 4 teams play in finals regardless of which conference they were in.

The worst problem is the severe distortion of potential finalists that sit in the bottom half of the ladder.

Edit:  I just saw DeeSpencer's posts with similar info to this post.

Anyway, fantastic performance by the girls today.

Loved the way they played the wind again with smart defensive footy against it and then attacking footy with it.

Pearce led the mids really well and they were great  around the contest against a strong Brisbane side. Used the ball by hand and foot in the right balance.

Forwards did the job. Newman a weapon in space and crumbing. Hanks an absolute beauty, sets up so much with her clean hands, a natural. Hore was quite. Zanker stuffed up 1 goal terribly and another where she should've snapped but went a drop punt but he she keeps competing.

Backs were dominant. Guest has made a difference after missing round 1. Downie is probably still building in to her game. So is Lampard. Edmonson a few iffy decisions but a lot of good. Cordner was probably best on ground. She monstered big Sabrina. Never let her get in to the game at all. Fantastic performance. BOG for mine.

Why didn't they just do a draw with 7 games then 'Dee'?

Great win by the Women today - next week against the Roos could decide if we make the finals or not given this unbalanced conference rubbish - should be the four best teams in my opinion.

Love that Harriet wears her granddads number

Harriet has improved so much. Last year Sabrina killedus off her own boot. Harriet subdued her completely.

Incidentally, her GREAT  grandfather, Ted senior, was a Demon. I guess they’re right  calling her a “third generation “Demon, since her Dad, Chris, “only” played amateur footy(VIC amateurs, a dominant ruckman for Uni Blacks, and a Rhodes scholar).

If Don Cordner was her granddad, Ted Cordner junior must be her great uncle, and David her uncle(?). Apparently  Ted jnr. would  have probably won a Brownlow, too, if they’d awarded it during the war years, while he was studying Medicine.

Does anyone know if Lily is any relation to Laurie and Kevin.? Whether or not she is, she should wear no. 11.

Just read the conference will kill us what a joke that the bottom teams play off in the finals what a disgrace. Great win by the Dees again, Pearce could be winning the female equivalent of the brownlow. Cordner was superb on Sebrina and Newman is an excitement machine.

The conference seems a convoluted way of going about things.

But then again it is the AFL...

Conspiracy theory: Because they want to trial conferences in AFLW before bringing in to AFL to guarantee more rivalry games.

Likely theory: Because there's no perfect way to have 10 teams play 7 rounds (just as there's no perfect way for 18 to play 22 in mens) they came up with some creative in the pursuit of fairness.

Which is crazy because it's sport. Players will get suspended and miss a game against your side. The wind will swing. The umpires will botch things. Injuries. Illness. Etc. Fair isn't really ever going to happen so just get the best 4 teams in the finals would be my advice.

The crazy thing is they split the conferences on ladder position from the previous year as 1, 3, 5 and 7 v 2, 4, 6 and 8. Why on earth would you do odds and evens! Don't have to be a genius to work out something like 1, 4, 5, 8 and 2, 3, 5 and 7 is at least smarter. Then they chucked North - who signed a heap of gun players - in to the group with 1, 3, 5 and 7 and the Cats in to the lesser group. That's bush league.

Another conspiracy theory would be the desire on the part of the AFL to ensure the participation of the traditionally powerful clubs in Carlton and Collingwood in the finals series. The Blues are on top and the Pies have been well beaten but could still make it if they start winning some games in their weak comp.

Surely, the organisers could have foreseen that the stronger sides were in one group?

It seems Cunningham was not reported.  Good news as she will be an important player vs North next week.  A critical game to win and maintain finals hopes.

It being at Casey gives us a bit of an advantage especially if we play the wind there to our advantage.

I was there yesterday and was mighty impressed with the Dees. Some great linkup work at times resulting in 5-6 chains of possessions and some classy finishing in front of goals. Stood up out of my chair whenever Newman went near it and Cordner completely blanketed Sabrina. North a big game this weekend but reckon our girls can do it after today.

Great atmosphere at my local footy club (Wilston Grange) too. Lions AFLW traditionally play miles away on the outskirts of Brisbane so it was great to not only have a game in inner Brisbane but one against the Dees made it even more special. Copped it from my mates at the club walking around in a Dees jersey but the comments seem to stop in the second quarter. Wilston Grange is Oskar Baker's former club as well so another link to the Dees.

Blind Freddy could have foreseen the problem with the 'conference' ladders that is now glaringly on display.  A conference system isn't needed to put 10 teams in 7 rounds.  It could be done with a random draw and let the results (and finalists) fall out on a ten team ladder.  Either way there are two teams that each club does not play.

There is no way the AFL will 'realise the error of their ways' and change the finals this year.

The commentary team who could easily have been mistaken for a 5AA commentary team mentioned the report every time Teagan was on screen. They even tried to stitch her up again when she gave away an innocuous and in my eyes dubious free kick later in the game. The same commentary team called a Sabrina hip and shoulder that wasn't given a free kick as accidental contact.

Too true.  Biased commentary especially from Alistair Lynch.

I haven’t watched other games but the standard of footy in ours has certainly improved over the past couple of seasons. Lots of times I found myself saying ‘good kick’, ‘nice mark’ or ‘great hands’. That lace out pass by Hanks to hit a moving Cat Phillips that set up Newman for her running goal was a fantastic piece of play. No way they pull that off in the opening season

Think we have covered the loss of Daisy fairly well. Our mids have been generally on top during the 3 games so far. Thank god neither of the expansion teams got Paxman, she is so bloody good. I thought losing the ruckman Hoare to Geelong would hurt but Pearce has really improved hasn’t she. Probably in the top 3 or 4 B & F voting at the moment. And I must admit I have never really rated Mel Hickey who also went to Geelong. She obviously works hard on her game but has the coordination and footy IQ of a robot. I’d have Jakobsson and Downie over her any day.

Next week V North could be the match of the year. I had thought it a certain loss but we are playing some fantastic footy and we will test them. Also we have played 3 games on the trot in windy conditions  and seem to be playing it quite well. Good chance to be the same at Casey next week

Go Melbourne!

Firstly congrats to Daisy on the birth of her twins.

I noticed on the instagram post that Daisy put up today being the 18th that the twins were born on the 15th and then I remembered some commentary in the last quarter by Bec Goddard congratulating Daisy but then weirdly sorta of backing it up and mentioning the upcoming birth.

Had it been announced at the time of the game and I missed it? Or was Bec not supposed to have revealed it and quickly backtracked?

Am I looking for a conspiracy where none exists?

Anyway congrats to Daisy and her partner Ben.

Great win on the road for the girls.  L Pearce should earn coaches votes 3 weeks in a row.  Loved Hanks and Newman's work.  As others have commented, Paxman and Cordner (who clearly stopped Sabrina) were dominant.  One mention of Katherine Smith who I thought played her best game on Sunday including a nice snap.  She has been slowly building and is another promising youngster to complement Mithen, Kemp, Hanks, Zanker, Lampard, Brancatisano and others.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
