Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Old dee, have you noticed that Weid is significantly younger than Tmac and May? Hard to perform at a high level for years when you are young and only played 20 something games.

As I said, let's see towards the end of the year

He has played 17 games in his first three years, IMO irrespective of his age that is not a good tally for a number 9 KPF draft pick.

What is clear to me is that unless we change our bomb it high into the forward line game plan he will never be successful. He is just not that sort of player.

He appears to be a more lead up player and then mark a well direct kick.

If we are not going to deliver the ball that way to him we might as well clear him now as he will definitely  not succeed at the MFC if we continue the bomb it in method.

You will not believe me but I actually feel sorry for him, whatever his talent level the MFC is crucifying him at present.

he's a key forward who wont be reaching his peak for about another 4 or 5 years. to say he is no good is short sighted and silly. for his manager to say he is worth 700k is just as farcical.

If it takes another four or five years 30% of MFC members will be in the ground me included.

No loss you say and you maybe right however I would prefer him performing well soon as I would like to enjoy my last few watching years.

Swap Jones with Goodwin. Win-win IMO. Jones can't coach, which means the players will play naturally. Goodwin's probably still faster than Nathan, so we gain an extra runner (and on-field coach, aka a "captain").

It could catch on….

And I’d look at playing Oscar McDonald as a small forward this week.

I was thinking on ball. We are Really lacking that X factor and burst out of congestion.

I'm absolutely all for the Weid getting a run at CHB.

He has a nice field kick, excellent handballer, has proven to be a good tackler when his legs get him to the contest and it would build his toughness. The forward would take him to the contest where he has the leap to spoil and marking is always easier as a defender than a forward.

If we're 8 goals down to the Swans at 3/4 time (and assuming he's in the side) I'd chuck him on Buddy for a quarter. What's to lose? Play a 7th defender back if we are worried about the game blowing out.

How many games did we watch Nev Jetta battle as a half forward or Tommy McDonald butcher the ball at half back until they were flipped to the other end? Hands up who thought Melksham would make an excellent marking forward? Sometimes you have to move guys around.

600k plus performances clauses that unlock the extra 100k each year. You can't lock in a key forward with future prospects for any less these days surely? If he wants to go somewhere else with that on the table, then you'd have to question his buy-in

  • 2 weeks later...

it's the going rate for forward with talent - and it's an opening gambit - personally I'd pay it, as there is a lot of upside to him, he isnt fully developed, and can clearly perform when it counts as evidenced by last year.

That’d be 3 months worth of Cameron by the way he is playing right now

and about half of his current salary which is over $1.2m a year

key forwards are the big earners in the competition

weid has the hallmarks of being a ripper player - he competes in the air and at ground level, tackles, and is a fantastic kick

in the grand scheme of salary cap management, $650k a year is not huge money these days tbh

There is no shortage of clubs looking for a KPH:

  • Hawks need to replace Roughead.  Reported over the weekend they are looking at Patton, despite his injury as they have proven to have great medical staff (O'Meara, Scully, Burgoyne).
  • Geelong need to replace Hawkins.  A poster here late last year reported their very keen interest in Sam which he was considering.
  • Pies have only Cox as a tall forward.  They would love the Weideman name back on their list.
  • Essendon have only Daniher, sometimes.

So let's not get to cocky - we must sign him and his management know it.  All parties know the interest in Sam from other clubs.

If we don't contract him sooner than later and our poor form continues he may ask for a trade!  Then where will be be?

These clubs' needs are a reality. I ask myself, when considering re-contracting the Weed, after the current period of 3-4 years how much has he improved, how great is his contribution, can I wait (can the Club wait) another 3-4 years for the mushroom to swell, grow and open up; what does he offer that another young gun sourced elsewhere might not offer in the same timeframes? He has served an apprenticeship at the MFC, is stuck in Year 3 of that development and his loss from the Team for any reason - in reality - is nothing profound as his contribution is quite low for a week-by-week contributor.

He'd turn a profit on transfer from the MFC ... and along comes another but slightly different Hogan that we cannot obtain...

If the clubs I mentioned want a replacement for a tall fwd there are a limited number available, so I don't agree they need a reality check.

Regarding Sam's performance/potential, I'm not sure who you might be comparing him to.  I compare him to other tall players in his draft year:

image.png.e116dc9efff619ac215b6db2d942fe6d.png

  • Hipwood leads the field for consistently good performance but he wasn't available and may end up being the pick of the crop.
  • Curnow is getting a lot of kudos but he has stalled this year.
  • All have had fluctuating performances as has Sam.
  • None of the draftees have stood up in a big game like Sam did in the finals.

imv he is as good if not better than most of his peers.  I have little doubt when Hawks, Cats, Pies, Ess, Sydney go hunting for a fwd they will look at that pool.   What other choices do they have?

I don't wish to buy into what Sam's  $ worth as Mahoney has great control over our salary cap and keeping players.  But we supporters shouldn't underestimate that he would be in demand.

    TRAINING: Friday 19th April 2024

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
