Matthew Kreuzer sits comfortably with Watts on level of output achieved in careers thus far (and that's sfa). Kreuzer has an excuse though, he's been injured for a majority of them, but he is not a great warhorse, more like a broken down horse (if he is a great warhorse, then that makes me Phar Lap).

But to say that Watt's is so far behind the likes of Kreuzer, Swallow, Patton and even Boyd (he played his best footy on the biggest stage, but he did sfa before or since) is a little far-fetched. And let's not forget Paddy McCartin, who has probably done less at the same stage of his career, nor has Weitering been any decent yet either.

Malcolm is just continuing to be Malcolm.............clueless.

p.s. i have never been a huge Watts' fan and think Goody was right in trading him out, but the cr@p that Blight has dribbled represents the knowledge of an imbecile

Wow blighty didn't hold back. But he does make a few good points when talking about players that have gone 31 before him or after him. 

What confuses me about this though before he snorts the stuff he appears to be looking at the camera and says are you ready. Or is he just saying it to those around him. Surely he could notice someone has there phone recording it. Then today he says he didn't know he was being filmed. 

I reckon he's making money out of the attention... in some fashion.

IF watts knew he was to be filmed... and then to screen the video,  to maybe make some money by views... then a Deregistration is in order, for bringing the game into disrepute.

 the key words are commitment, determination to the cause, and an honesty in his onfield actions few show.

I largely agree with this.

Boyd is rubbish, Patton has done nothing, and McCartin has done less than 'tip toes'.

I disagree re Kreuzer.  While he is a battler, he's at least had a top 3 B&F finish and made the AA squad of 40.  He's demonstrably been better than Watts.  More importantly, he has courage in the air.

Actually, Blight was only talking about the five no 1 picks either side of Watts, not the very recent ones. Patton is not comparable due to knee injuries. Boyd was arguably BOG in a premiership... I'd take that over Watts' output any day!

However, the gist of what Blight is saying is that Watts has had an underwhelming career and is a waste of a no 1 pick. And he's right. Calling a guy of his pedigree clueless and an imbecile says more about you than him.

While I have made some comments on this, thinking about it last night made me angry. In particular, about one a series of events before Jack was traded.

My recollections of the time were of Jack fronting the media (at press events no other player would have organized for them outside the auspices of the club) shooting us his sad puppy dog look and insisting that he didn't want to leave when 'success was around the corner'. There was the whinging about how the club 'didn't want good kicks in the team' and his  Dad complaining 'how he was being crucified' (Jack surely could have knocked that comment on the head if he wanted to). Finally, there was him coming out to say that he chose Port over us as he thought they were the better team (as if the decision was solely in his hands). 

Instead of playing the media game with Paul Connors (don't tell me that camera crew at Tullamarine was there by chance and just randomly ran into Jack), he could have shown the AFL industry that he had taken on board the feedback given. He could have stated while he was disappointed with the decision, it was a kick in the bum and that he was hellbent on proving us wrong. That he was handing the reins of Skwosh over to his 2IC for a few years and he was going to get the most out of what he had left of his career. That he was going to hit the track early and try his best to win over his new teammates.

Sadly, it seems that nothing has sunk in. In fact, it seems that his party boy lifestyle has now been laid bare (we heard rumblings but it was never confirmed like this). The week before he was traded showed me that he seems to have a sense of entitlement that has shaped his career. I wonder how blokes like Daniel Cross, James Magner and Chris Dawes would have felt seeing this? Were they given the chance to plead their case on national TV to keep their spot on the list? They mostly were disappointed but accepted it and then moved on. They mostly got that no one is entitled to a spot, this is something that has yet to dawn on Jack yet it seems.

I felt sorry for Jack in how he was handled in his debut season. However, the 'it's everyone else's fault but mine' line has had no currency since 2015. He has to frigging grow up.

Tricky word, "sanction". I know what you mean, but "sanction" can be used both negatively and positively. I hope everyone who read this realises that you were using "sanction" to mean "disapproves of" rather than "approves".

Port in 2013 to 2014 were in a similar situation to us now.  A brilliant season in 2014 getting to the prelim with a very young list and a 5 year premiership window.  Then Hinkley decided to be a big softy and let that %$^* Kane Cornes play games at the start of 2015 just to get to 300 and Port has been [censored] ever since, including 2015.  So Watts is just a sign of the ongoing cultural problems at Port. Just shows never take stuff for granted, including where we are now.  It can unravel easily through bad player management.  We seem to have the right people in place not to let that happen though.

But you are spot on about the fish rotting at the head ... we have had any number of poor managers or people in positions of authority failing at their jobs.

Frustration from Ron towards the players and the club, a lot of players p...off with Ron, committee members wondering why the messiah couldn't perform miracles. Northey I guess built a winning take no prisoners culture although Committee members got p....off with him. Admin and footy club were poles apart.. Also during this time the Hollywood Boulevard players ruled the roost and this continued to some extent under Daniher. There were Daniher favourites and those that did not get a look in.

If we could go back and add 4 or 5 top players to those Northey & Daniher teams we almost certainly would have won a flag or 2.  And top management goes with all that.  And a good culture.

And you win flags then everything is viewed differently.  We've never had the talent levels in my opinion.  Hopefully that changes.

And just on being a top player ... as a forward the front position is a prerequisite and so is the ability to take a contested mark.  Basic skills 101.  Without those basics a tall forward can never be a top player.

Losing all the time impacts all footy people... even opposition supporters see and expect it of us,   after years of us being "also-rans".

When these kids grow... and some get recruited to the Dees, they still harbour these images and sub conscious thoughts.

 

They enter into a club full of subtle hidden defeatist attitude...  which turns itself into an internalised  social mindset, and social party atmosphere...  This to help get through the seasons of hell.

 

Enter Barassi, or even a Neeld...  and this attitude and defensiveness has to be smashed open...  removed and repaired.  It takes years to do this. 

And a lot of mental pain for all,  and a much playing for oneself, survival instinct... and a lot of work.

Under theses mental attitudes and defensive mindsets, learning rarely occurs within anxious minds. (see the think tank)

 

Johnny Northey inherited a club that was already turned around into the correct direction... sailing, tacking, with the wind in its sails... but just not the scores on the board to that point.

 

Add in a few good (fortunate) recruiting decisions... and we were almost away..

Add another emotional ingredient... and the side grew in belief enormously,  based on the feet, legs and shoulders of  'Slug' Jordans kids.

 

Remember 'mumbles' Bailey,  a young Chris Connolly, Battiston, Wight, Lyon, Yeates, Grinter, Williams, the Lovett's, O'Dwyer, Eishold, Newport, Fidge boys, young Healy, Campbell, Febey boys, Lovell. etc

These boys were the platform that the late 80's and early 90's success stories, were built upon...  Add the senior recruits to the mix and a fresh faced Coach, and away it rolled.

 

Sadly, this WIN attitudes waned in the 90's some time...  and a Hollywood theme grew.

I know we have a 24 hour news cycle and way too many wannabe journalists trying to eke out a living, but this obsession that society has with being offended by every little thing that is said and done by consenting adults in private simply astounds me.

Jack is a silly boy for letting himself be filmed but beyond that, who cares? He is enjoying himself, in the off season, out of the country and no laws have been broken. Port are entitled to be disgruntled about the impact on their image, but Koch is the last person who can complain about having private acts splashed across the media - he has made a career out of doing it to others.

Yes, Jack is a supremely talented footballer who may look back on his career as a waste, but that is his cross to bear.  He has been paid extremely well to do something he enjoys for over a decade, has lived a life that most of us can only dream of, and has plenty of options post-football. Good luck to him.
