Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Goodwin signs on until end of 2022

Goodwin is under some pressure right now, but not for his job.

The pressure on him, is to get it right.

I believe other coaches have pulled apart his gameplan and worked out how to beat it, all over the ground.

So it is up to Simon to counterpunch this week. Lose to Essendrug, and 2019 is almost cooked.

I don’t understand how a forward line can become so inept, of even the games basic skills, but it’s what i saw on Saturday Night.

So Simon i hope you have some answers....

Goodwin has a very smart manager, getting him a three year contract before we have played a game this year, and coming directly off our worst loss from 2018.  Very clever.  We couldn't have waited until round 10 to see if he was worth continuing with?

Goodwin would have been given a new contract even if we didn't make finals last year, I won't go into all the reasons why as this was covered in the previous Goodwin thread.

Good move by the club.  Lock him in.  He doesn't lose his cool and communicates well from what I can see.

He hasn't been perfect (Jordan Lewis made a slow list slower; we sold the farm for Lever and removed ourselves from the super-draft), and these ramifications with stay with us for years.  However....

The simpletons just look at a couple of games and judge.  These are the same simpletons that would be spitting chips if Adelaide poached him and offered him a 5-6 year deal, if we hesitated.

I am a big believer in not extending a contract to an un-poachable.  But Adelaide would have circled.  (Pike might be a carcass in the breeze, and might be one bad stint away from the axe).  We had no other choice.

Coaches grow and learn on the job.  Look at Bucks, Hardwick, Clarko.

I am not close enough to the club to know but wonder if the players have respect for our rag tag array of assistant coaches? None of them were stars modern players would respect other than for their titles. When I looked at Rattern quietly talking to a close circle of Saints at half time I shuddered.

Totally agree. Another inept board decision. There was no reason to extend. Yet again a complete lack of understanding of reality from those who run our club. We couldn't beat anyone in the top 8 until round 21 Last year.

Aside from Lever and May, who wouldn’t help the strategic plan that the FD appear to be gunning for - you can’t help but think that’s 5 weeks in a row where our dominance of inside 50’s and resultant lack of conversion into shots must have eroded all the good will from the players playing the system from the joy of last years finals.

“We are easy to play against”!

Shrewd and subtle observations like this must be why he is on such coin.  Surely nobody else could see this ?

Goodwin should stay but all the other coaching jobs should be up for grabs. Fresh blood is needed. I’m not sure about recruitment either - nothing outstanding about this years youngsters on first impressions

Totally agree. Goodwin needs new ideas. His game plan has been exposed. Essentially all the experience he has had is at a rabble at Essendon and under roos who was more about culture than game style.

This year is a write off. All we can hope for is a richmond style clean out

Interesting comments by many on Goody and I'm sure he will now be rethinking his game philosophy as will Longmire, Brad Scott, Bevo and others.

What few have made a point of is that so far this season we have had a predominantly warm and dry start to the season, so our emphasis on stoppage work has been less integral to the outcome of most games.

What we have all seen is how our high press has been exposed on the counter and we haven't had enough pace to stop this flow on effect. This is not a new problem, go back to when we were 2-3 last year after our loss to the Tigers and you will find the comments about being exposed over the back the same.

All sides now are getting better at playing soccer-style triangles in defence which means it's harder to get intercepts and you have to wonder if our press is working - maybe that's one of the big adjustments required, although wet weather and night games sees the ball spill and the high press become more beneficial.

Certainly we are not getting any benefit out of superior forward entries - partly because of a lack of quality talls (Mac and Weids failure) and lack of quality smalls (Spargo and ANB and Sparrow before him), which forced Hunt to be sent into that role and will most likely mean Jeffy gets another shot at it on Wednesday.

The other point I'd make is that we need more out of Oliver. He still wins clearances but he has to take the game on and risk getting caught. He is our most damaging mid and he's playing safe with dinky gives that help his stats but do nothing for the team. We need him to take ownership of going forward and it's not happening and my worry is that he won't have time to make the adjustment to his game for this season.

But please, even if we fail again dismally throughout this season, don't call for Goody's exit. As with other coaches, he needs time to re-strategise and come up with a more long-lasting style, just as Hardwick did in 2017, Simmo and Bucks did in 2018 and Chris Scott, Hinkley and Richo have done this year.

Like it or leave it we are stuck with him for three years unless he turns it around in 2020 it will be the  familiar MFC of the last five decades.

He won’t last 3 more years without turning it around.

Time to actually perform, and not just hope it improves

If that's the case...or...no change in fortunes, then we have learnt absolutely nothing and the legacy of Jackson and Roos will have been totally flushed down the toilet.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

    GAMEDAY: Rd 07 vs Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
