Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

My MIssus and daughter turned that Bachelorette thing on last night. So I exited stage left and went upstairs to read and realised this had just started which I'd never heard live. Then when you asked people to ring in, I thought I could do that. No one will know. So I phoned in. Unbeknown to me a friend was listening and mentioned it to his wife, who rang mine and said do you know what your husband's doing at the moment. So I get sprung for doing something secretly upstairs while she's downstairs by someone somewhere else. Can't win.

I don't expect him to name the player but I'd expect him to say if we are interested or not.

Lots of Jones haters on here pretending to be Dees supporters.

Like Fifty stated and I categorically agree, how does he finish 4th in the BnF?

As players get older, slower and gradually worse (except Cameron Smith@ Melb Storm),  supporters, commentators all tend to highlight poor games. I know against the Swans, Jones didn’t seem to be running, maybe he was injured, but did make me consider, how long has he got to go!

From a loyalty perspective, it would be a hard hearted Demon who wouldn’t want to see him part of a flag!

As this years GF showed, margin between winning and losing is fine and you can’t carry any passengers.

Lets hope Jones has an injury free pre season and has a great year, but in the end the club/team is greater than any one player!

You're the snowflake that sent me the whiny PM.

Some supporters can dispassionately discuss players.  It's called maturity.  It doesn't mean you "hate" anyone.

Jones played a consistent year, but it lacked brilliance.  Then again, his whole career has lacked brilliance, which is why he has never made the AA squad of 40.

He played plenty of games at a consistent level, which will reward a player like Jones in a B&F, especially when he plays nearly every game.

Mids who are more important than Jones by year's end ?  Harmes, Brayshaw, Oliver, Viney, and vandenBerg on a wing.  Petracca is more effective when he has stints on ball.

Jones will remain in the conversation for a rotation through the midfield, but he's not a great outside mid, so it's fair to question his role in the side moving forward.

I'm struggling to squeeze him into a fully fit 22.  There are others you'd prefer on a wing, which is an area of the ground where we struggle, and there are inside mids ahead of him.

For now he has a spot on the pine.

Must be clouding the FDs judgement too.  Still waiting to hear your explanation of his 4th finish in the BnF?

I'm not particularly interested in BnF finishes. They might betray FD thinking but they also belie what steadily grew worse as the season went on. His form and to many that watched with me, some of his play dropped to embarrassing levels for someone who holds the captaincy of our club.

If I had enough time, I'd compile a string of moments where he shat himself under pressure. I suspect I wouldn't even need to go past the last three games in order to put together a reel.

Some supporters love sentimentality. I admire his loyalty and professionalism, but he's only ever been an honest tryer. I never saw Robbie play, but I suspect the comparisons to a player of his standard are completely unfair and are almost entirely due to sentimentality.

Robbie was graceful, skillful, took speckies was courageous & fair. He was a match winner & could execute a blind turn at full pace. Can't compare them.

Everyone else's opinion is wrong. Yours is right. Well played.

Pretending to be a supporter. I go to 17-19 games a year and I'm a paid up member. Have been for 30 years. Get your hand off it.

Why does his position in the bnF have any bearing on the conversation over his role in the team moving forward? Clarko didn't roll out the red carpet of a long contract for Lewis or Mitchell after they finished in the top 2 or 3 of their bNf. He saw the writing on the wall that a 3 years contract was not going to benefit the team, and traded them somewhere that would benefit them individually. I'm not suggesting anything like that, i'm only suggesting that having the conversation about Jones, his strengths and weaknesses and his role or position in the team next year and the years after, does not make you a hater.

Spot on. @Fifty-5 love your work mate, but let's put aside the sentimentality and then I think we'll be closer to agreeing.

Jones, like Brayshaw, is a starting midfielder. If he's not in there, he's lost. I don't think he has a position in 2019. Will he play? Of course he'll play, but he shouldn't be captain IMO, because we might require a more balanced lineup as the season progresses.

I don't think we can play Jones and Lewis together. We will for a time I'm sure (due mainly to their experience), but if we can remain relatively injury-free, Jones will be tried on a wing and potentially at half back or half forward, with stints through the midfield as you say.

Lewis will play half back and that's it. He's probably first of the two to get pushed out and that could be as early as the first half of the season.

I think with Fritsch, VDB and KK spending more time on the wings, they will soon push Jones out too.

I think Jones will probably go around again in 2020, but it'd be without the captaincy and he'll find himself playing at Casey unless there are significant injuries or he reinvents himself.

the interesting and probably disappointing comment from josh was that Jesse was happy to stay if we couldn't broker a satisfactory trade .Doesn't seem that we were forced to take 6 and 23 because Jesse was insisting on a trade ,more just a statement of preference.A tragedy if this becomes the difference in winning or not winning this years flag .

For all the nice words that Josh spoke about Hogan staying on, being happy to etc.

The subtext was obvious. Jessie wanted to go home and he was gone, we could have held him another year but it wasn't really in his interest or ours.

We wanted May and he was ours this year if we could arrange a deal.

Next year he's a free agent but then we are back in the pack with a host of others in a bidding war.

Far from guaranteed and adds salary cap pressure.

We get a quality defender now when we need him, it makes sense.

I know you think we played this wrong 'kall' but only time will tell.

To me the logic of the trade stacks up.

I was a huge Jesse fan, and argued we should keep him over May, but in hindsight I can see the logic of the trade and now think we are a much better chance to win a flag in 2019, so JM gets a big tick from me.  IF we win a flag this year, imo it will be because of improving 3 things:

1. A forward line that can kick goals when the ball is bombed in.

2. Forwards and mids who consistently pressure.

3. A defence that holds up.

Jesse out, Weid+May+Preuss in helps all 3 of the above immediately.  For Jesse to be the difference we would need a midfield with elite inside 50 footskills to make the most of his speed.  That is something we could develop, but we just don’t have it yet.

excellent show fellas. Terrific interview with Josh with some really good questions and thoughtful respones and i enjoyed It's Time's contribution.

He's an impressive fella, JM - we're lucky to have him. I liked the neat way he sidestepped the question from Grapeviney asking if he had his hat in the ring for the CEO gig.

One question came to mind during the interview. i would be interested in knowing what the sense the club (and by the club i don't mean players) has of Demonland (and Bigfooty - to a lesser extent), in so far as they have ready access to the sort of feedback and opinion of hardcore fans that most business would kill for - and often pay for in terms of expensive focus groups and consultation processes.

Honestly,  this shouldn't be interesting.

It was only the crazies who were carrying on about how Josh was losing trades etc. Most people understood what the situation was and were happy with the trade.

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
