Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

All quiet.  Media must be disappointed in the delisted free agent action so far.  Clubs seem to be banking on getting 5-6 picks in this super draft.

Don't worry, the AFL and the media will come up with something to keep footy news on the back page and on Channel 7 (Tim Watson's) sport news.

I think we can anticipate that whatever happens it will be promoted as a major shock:

  • "In a major shock, none of the delisted free agents was picked up by closing time in the delisted free agents period"
  • "In a major shock, player X, was the only delisted free agent picked up by closing time in delisted free agents period"
  • "In a major shock, player X and player Y were the only delisted free agents picked up by closing time in delisted free agents period"
  • etc

Would we rookie DJ?

Wouldn’t think we’d bother personally. He was poor as a forward and average at best as a defender. Better to move him on and get fresh talent coming through. Not everyone is Neville Jetta. He was the exception, not the standard.

Some clubs have selected DFAs.  It's a legitimate pathway to get delisted players to clubs ahead of the draft and doesn't impede or cost anything.  I think if you pick up a DFA they go onto your Senior List, if DFAs aren't picked up in this period their prospects in the ND are grim but they may be selected in the RD.

I think if you look at a combination of @DeeSpencer, @FireInTheBelly and my posts above you'll get at the truth.  Hawthorn save salary cap probably in 2018 so they don't go over, Langford gets some consideration somewhere to make up for foregoing the last year's contract payment and other clubs won't pick him because he will retire if they do.  It's bending the rules.

i agree there is risk for Langford.  Why is he doing it?  Generational love for the Hawks despite being delisted.  They are going to pay him even more some other way? There's a few plausible explanations.

Now the Swans and Tippett doing similar:

Clearly the FD have a plan for the draft, that didn’t include the FA’s that were available this year and were gettable by us.

It will be interesting to see the type of players we pick up, especially given the departure of JH.

I'd like to see us pick up Townsend and Sheridan as depth players for the midfield.

Then take picks 23, 28, 54 & 62 in the draft.

Could look something like:

23 - Bailey Williams

28 - Ely Smith

54 - Toby Bedford

62 - no idea

Bailey  Williams impresses me as a strong prospect, given that he is also young enough to train into a role that exploits his given talents as these currently stand. We would be lucky to get him, I'd think, due to our picking/pecking schedule.

It's so long ago, I've forgotten how it played out, but did we "move him on" or did he choose to leave? Choosing to leave during our basket-case years would hardly be a surprise.

Cheney struggled with the Dees at that time, as he was not strong with the ball above his shoulder height, or in a challenge for the ball with a taller player (most). His time at the Hawks and certainly, the Crows seems to have given him alternatives to winning the contest in one grab; he is now a terrific spoiler, a clear punch-away with direction, a bring the ball down to the ground and run on asset with good disposal, solid intent and carry, and mongrel. I think he does have some current hamstring problems but watching him closely against the Crows in ADL, he was impressive across the whole game.

Id think it might be a wait and see whos left at our picks. If we dont like anyone at those late picks well look to sign a DFA after the draft otherwise well use our draft picks if there somebody we fancy.

I can't believe it's allowed. Perhaps we should move Jones and Lewis to the rookie list. As long as they come out in the press and say they'll retire rather than get picked and play for another club.

Jacob Allison is a young talent. Lions have delisted but will promise to add to rookie list.

Not sure if it is frowned upon, but surely he is now available as a delisted free agent. He is the type of wingman and link player that MFC needs. Tall 6”3 midfielder with pace and is a good kick.   Just a thought.

No offence mate, but if it was up to you we'd be recruiting every delisted free that gets cut from their club.

Done nothing at AFL level to suggest he could make it elsewhere.

Newton, Kennedy, Sellars, Gillies, Michie, Riley, Burns, Rodan, Balic, Tyson  - and I mean no disrespect to any of them - but rarely has a reject gone and shone for us. Tyson had his moments, as did Kennedy, Newton and Michie, but I'd rather trust Taylor and Co. to unearth the untried bargains they've been able to conjure.

Tyson wasnt a reject. That is being quite unkind to a bloke who agreed to come to us when we were a laughing stock, and played some very good football for us.

Agreed he would not to fit into our best side now and his shortcomings are obvious to most, but to include him in your list is extremely unfair to him.

He is well above every other name in that list.

Fair enough. I also agree he's well above anyone else on that list and I hesitated in naming him. He couldn't crack it for a regular game with GWS, however. Injuries hampered him, I know but...The bottom line is Melbourne were keen to offload him. Like I say, I mean him no disrespect but I know every time he passed the ball to an opposition player - pin point accurate - I felt another stab in my already Demon-fractured heart.

Agreed. He might not be starring now, but Tyson played some quality football for us and has played over 100 games.
In 2014 he finished second in the BnF to Jones in his first year with us at age 20-21. He was a bees [censored] away from winning it off Jones, and would have been a worthy winner after a stellar season. Knee injury 2015. Finished fourth in our BnF in 2016 against some quality players in a team playing well for patches and just missing the 8. 2017 he was limited by a knee injury. 2018 he struggled.

The way he's been spoken about and criticised on here this year has been unwarranted IMO. I wish him well at North, as he's a good bloke who played some good footy for us and chose to come when we were  basket case. Here's a bit of a discussion point; Tyson was better than Petracca at the same age!

Regarding DFAs, doesn't seem like we'll pick anyone up. I'm a bit surprised we moved so many players, as our list appears like it will come short? Perhaps we will re-rookie some like Bugg?

Tyson has almost zero peripheral vision and spacial/situational awareness, and it will always be his limiting factor as a player, in addition to hit and miss kicking. That said, his inside game is quite good. I was hoping he would go to Gold Coast, as he would have added value to their list.

Looks like we wont sign a dfa. Meh.

With the swapping of picks for an upgrade, looks like Taylor has his sights on a particular player. With his current strike rate, I am very excited about that.

Why do you care? They are using a list spot on a retired player to pay out the contract owed to them. We have no shortage of list spots. The rookie list really has no difference to the main list these days, moving a senior player on to the rookie list does nothing to help or harm us.

We have 8 list spots. No team should ever be adding 8 x 18 year old players to their list, yet alone a team that is hopefully close to contention like we are. A fifth of the list as babies in one season wouldn't be smart.

Bargain basement retread players usually fail but so do the late round picks that take their spot. This year we've got enough list spots to add a couple of late round or rookie picks as well as a couple of mature players - be they delisted or state league types.

Apart from mature depth that might contribute to the best side and play a number of games we have to add some older guys to strengthen the training standards, strengthen Casey and be low maintenance.

I very much doubt we'll only add kids so my guess is the club is just waiting until draft night to weigh up the pros and cons of delisted players v state league players.

    DEPTH CHARGE by Whispering Jack

The jubilation on the coach’s face as he danced a celebratory jig by the playing bench after the final siren sounded to record his team’s four-point victory over the Demons when the teams last met, said it all.    On that rainy Friday night at the Adelaide Oval, Ken Hinkley’s young midfield secured much more than four points on offer. The victory over one of the big dogs of the competition after a succession of wins over some of its lesser lights gave his team respect and validation fo

They opened up the rooms to let Casey out to play on Sunday but the team was still hibernating and they missed the bulk of the opening quarter. A FORK IN THE HAWK by George on the Outer

For too long in the past, Demon fans became habitually sick and tired of watching the Hawks hand out thrashings to their side. But Melbourne’s empahtic 55-point win at the MCG on Saturday has truly put a fork in the Hawk and turned that history well and truly on its head. The Demons have now won nine of their last ten encounters with the other result, a draw.     And like a fork, it was the multi-pronged options that Melbourne had all across the ground.  It certainly helped that Hawthorn
