Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Official New Rule Changes for 2019

THE CHANGES

Traditional playing positions at centre bounces

  • Clubs must have six players inside both 50m arcs, with one player inside the goalsquare.
  • Four midfield players must start inside the centre square with the two wingmen stationed along the wing.

Kick-ins

  • At kick-ins, a player will no longer need to kick to himself to play on from the goalsquare.
  • Following a behind, the man on the mark will be brought out to 10m from the top of the goalsquare, rather than the existing five metres.

Marks and free kicks in defence

  • When defenders mark or receive a free kick within nine metres of their own goal, the man on the mark will be brought in line with the top of the goalsquare.

Runners and water carriers

  • Team runners may only enter the playing surface after a goal has been kicked and must exit before play restarts.
  • Water carriers are not permitted to enter the playing surface during live play.

Umpire contact

  • Players will be prohibited from setting up behind the umpire at centre bounces.

50m penalties

  • The player with the ball:
    • Must be allowed to advance the mark by 50m without the infringing player delaying the game.
    • Will be able to play on while the 50m penalty is being measured out.

Kicking for goal after the siren

  • A player who has been awarded a mark or free kick once play has ended:
    • Will now be able to kick across their body using a snap or check-side kick
    • BUT must kick the ball directly in line with the man on the mark and the goal.

Marking contests

  • The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
    • Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
    • PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.

Ruck contests: prior opportunity

  • A ruckman who takes direct possession of the ball from a bounce, throw-up or boundary throw-in will no longer be regarded as having had prior opportunity.
  • Where there is uncertainty over who is the designated ruckman, the ruckman for each team will still be required to nominate to the field umpire.

All the rules explained here:

50m penalties

  • The player with the ball:
    • Must be allowed to advance the mark by 50m without the infringing player delaying the game.
    • Will be able to play on while the 50m penalty is being measured out.

that is a [censored] rule, will cause all kinds of problems  and will slow the game down as you will have to closely watch the player with the penalty as he is running his 50.

so, they are keeping the [censored] sliding rule as well. (remember that crap where brayshaw got penalized for getting kicked in the head -

and not fixing the 3rd man up rubbish (so simple, 2 go up, if a third goes up, penalize...

Umpire contact

  • Players will be prohibited from setting up behind the umpire at centre bounces.

How do you suppose they police that one?????

Marks and free kicks in defence

  • When defenders mark or receive a free kick within nine metres of their own goal, the man on the mark will be brought in line with the top of the goalsquare.

confusing and pointless.

Marking contests

  • The 'hands in the back’ rule interpretation has been repealed so a player can now:
    • Place his hands on the back of his opponent to protect his position in a marking contest
    • PROVIDED he does not push his opponent in the back.

yet another one that will be difficult for the umpires to police, what constitutes a push ( as soon as I felt hands on my back I would lurch forward as I had been pushed.)

And if your ruckman is off the ground???????>

They've just made the game harder to umpire and not done anything to change the crowding around the ball.

666 is only at centre bounces when the game is at it's most open with the centre square anyway.

How ridiculous...

So much for this serious work that Gerrard kept going on about.

One rule change can cause confusion, but this many in one hit ?

More confusion, more free kicks, frustrated players and supporters.

More impact on the game, the contest and the result.

More spotlight on the umpires. Even more officious.

Razor Ray and the others will love this.

I think this means if no one nominates you don't have a ruckman for that contest.

Edit: I like the new ruck rule regarding taking the ball from the ruck is not prior opportunity. More snapped goals from Max at boundary throw ins a la Schwarta.

The 6-6-6 starting rule will really benefit teams who are strong at centre clearances, which is great for us.

A quick centre clearance will give you a very good chance of scoring.

I think this is why we will want to use Preuss and Gawn in tandem. It will give us a good chance to win the majority of centre clearances.

Thsee rule changes together are an absolute cluster.  Not only are the allowed to play on, but you are not allowed to impede them as they are going back.

I can see this as having a number of consequences:

1.  Upmires paying 2 x 50m penalties;

2. 50m penalties will turn into 60m penalties as players will inevitably work out that you can crimp an extra 10m for free by playing on.

Might as well just make it a "have a free shot at goal" penalty  (perhaps the equivilent of corner short in soccer;  No not really, I hate turing Aussie Rules into another sport).

50m penalties are already a big enough  blight on the game for the inconsistency with which they are paid, particularly with the protected zone stuff which was bought in.  The huge impacts they can have on the outcome of games is undesirable in most instances.  This will make the situation even worse.

I don't get this one , a point gets scored and defensive team can just run it in handball kick whatever from any position behind the goal line. Meanwhile attacking team (now defensive) will have the umpire calling them back to be 10m away from the goal square.

PLayer kicking in should always have to go through the square and what if the kicking in team decides to kick in before player has a chance to run back to 10m will that be a free kick?

Also if I see a 100m penalty against viney like the one they showed in the example I will loose my S$%t .

deadset ridiculous. The in the back is going to be horrible as well. I though the dangerfield example was a clear pushing motion and the Cripps wasn't . But hey extra allowance for Danger is standard

You can bet we'll be on the wrong end of one of these frees early in the season.

I like your thinking, but I am concerned that the way the rule has been implemented with all 6 players inside 50m will just create a more conjested forward 50m zone to start with.  The way it is being phrased is not correct in my view either it's not traditional to have all 6 players inside forward 50.  I think I could quite easily handle one player in the square, 3 inside 50 and the other 3 being along the front edge of the square as being traditional, but not all 6 inside 50.

I caveat all that with this disclaimer that I haven't seen any trial of all 6 starting inside 50.  If others and the AFL have actually seen this and can conclude that it works, then I'd be ok with the rule.  But on the basis of the recient relative AFL incompetence in making rule changes, I have significant doubts.

Personally I would prefer the AFL to keep progressively winding back the permissible number of rotations, I think that would be the most effective way of decreasing congestion.

How are supposed to watch your opponent while the 50 is being measured out.... we are going to see the defending player running backwards like a bloody umpire.

You would hope that it's applied with some comon sense, but I can also see huge potential for sperilous free kicks if it is umpired in an overzealous manner.

You would hope that runners exiting before play restarts would be applied so as a runner that is 40m+ away and running towards the boundary when play is restarting is not penalized.

Generally though this rule is somewhat overdue though.

I might be wrong here as well but doesn't the ump blow time off when he pays 50.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
