Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

In fact, a sign that Melbourne might be edging closer to such a deal could be the upgrading of a current rookie to the primary list.

We can still sign more rookies if we wish I'm pretty sure, so we don't need to upgrade a rookie to add another one.

That’s correct and it would mean going with a primary list of 39 plus 5 rookies. Much the same effect and depends to some extent on where we stand in terms of the salary cap.

I thought we had asked him to come and train with us as from the 3rd December. That way he gets paid [by us] and no other club can sign him. We would have first dibs. Same situation as Stack for Richmond. Have things changed?

Some more from the article

Bennell would add outside pace to the group if he could regain fitness, with the Demons having added Fremantle's Ed Langdon and the Giants' Adam Tomlinson during the trade period and losing Sam Frost to Hawthorn.

Melbourne were also keen to catch up with stranded former Sun Jack Martin ahead of the pre-season draft but were unlikely to pick him unless he showed he was open to joining them. All indications so far are that he has his heart set on joining the Blues.

and at a rumoured $1.5m over two seasons, he'd be crazy not to!

Yep, could potentially even be 38 + 6. We currently have 35 senior players and 4 rookies, so given our draft situation it could very well be a senior list of 38.

Not necessarily.

With the way the list numbers work now (long story short) we can add anywhere from 3-5 senior players to our list as it currently stands.

Senior list min 38 to max 40. A Rookies min 4 with list of 40 to max 6 with list of 38. Up to 3 Cat B Rookies separate to this.

We currently have 35 on list and have to draft 3 which at this stage includes 97 which is unlikely to be used other than on a rookie upgrade. If that was all that happened we'd have a list at the min 38 and 3 rookies left so would have to take 3 more. Put one place aside for Bennell and we'd take 2 in the rookie draft. Alternatively if we took a DFA like Murray and we kept a rookie place for Bennell we'd only pick 1 in the rookie draft.

When you take that into account it makes it even less of a downside if Bennell doesn't work as he'd take the place of a 2nd or 3rd pick in the rookie draft. Don't know what the stat's on players taken there being successful would be but I'd be surprised if it was very many.

Yep, it gets a bit confusing hey? Posted this the other day as a full run down.

ps - Does anyone know how the 3 pick rule has changed since we don't have to use a pick to upgrade rookies?

LIST REQUIREMENT
38 - 40 senior listed players
4 - 6 rookies
Up to 3 cat B rookies
Maximum total list size of 47 players

OUT
Sam Frost (trd)
Jeff Garlett (del)
Declan Keilty (del)
Jay Kennedy Harris (del)
Jordan Lewis (ret)
Corey Maynard (ret)
Tim Smith (ret)
Billy Stretch (del)
Guy Walker (ret)
TOTAL = 9

IN
Adam Tomlinson (fa)
Ed Langdon (trd)
TOTAL = 2

DRAFT(S)
Pick 3
Pick 8
Pick 97
PSD Pick 2
Relative rookie draft picks.
Delisted free agents also a possibility

SUMMARY - CURRENTLY
35 Senior Listed Players
4 Rookies
1 Cat B Rookie
TOTAL = 40

Meaning we will be adding between 3-5 senior players, with rookie numbers depending on that final number.

My understanding is you nominate a player (provided he has agreed of course) to join your club as a rookie list replacement (assuming you have rookie list space/s left or if you don't have one you make one available) under the SSP.  Bennell is eligible as he was delisted by the Dockers.

But this can't be done until all drafts are over and the SSP commences ie; from the 1st Dec, which might (partially or fully) explain why there is talk he wont commence training with us till Tuesday 3rd Dec.

Once he is on our list he can't be picked up by another club.  He is on our list and both parties are then committed to whatever contract he signed.  He will be paid like anybody else based on the terms of his contract.  The terms/nature of that contract would of course need to be tailored to suit the club's & player's unusual circumstances and, as others have already speculated, likely to be perfomance biased in some way.

He could come to some weird non-committal/non-contractual (unpaid) arrangement to train with more than one club and nominate for the draft but i can't see the incentive or logic for any club/s to go down that route and it also leaves Bennell (and partner!?) in a less than ideal situation, possibly ending up at a place/club he (she) just doesn't wish to be at.

Bottom line, if you hear any official word he is training with us on 3rd Dec then he is officially a Demon in 2020 (and possibly beyond).

Nothing like that but there is an Instagram photo of him in a Dees jumper floating around that has his hashtag showing he liked it. No such comment on the Geelong tweet about him.

Jay Clark provides an update on Harley Bennell

Seems they all feel we’re the front runners without saying he’s over the line. Between us and Geelong, always wary of Geelong in these situations, they’ve got a good record of getting players they want.

I am hoping that something gets announced soon. We are in the driver’s seat, but Geelong are very good at drafting players they want and could pull the rug from under us if we sit on this too long.

As I’ve stated before, I understand he has committed to us verbally and will begin training next month. I will be more comfortable when we come out and announce we want him and tht we are adding him to our our permission to train list.

Time will tell, but the Geelong angle worries me. They are a sneaky bunch

Not the first time either 36.

If my memory serves me correctly, i believe we left a contract (or whatever the papers were called back then that saw you secured to play with a particular club) with Doug Wade's mum & dad at one point in the early 60s and asked him (or it might have been the mum and dad directly...ie i can't recall if we even met up with Doug personally) to mul over whether he would come to us.

Meanwhile Geelong got wind of this and the late Bobby Davis paid his mum & dad a visit shortly after (from memory with a nice full paper bag or some sort of special gift in hand/promised...maybe a car/a year's worth of college fees or the like) and got him (with his mum & dad's approval) to commit and sign on the spot.

The rest is history of course including a premiership in 63 with the Cats as well as their leading goalkicker every year from 1961 to 72 (averaging 4 goals a match), bar an injury plagued 65 season

Kicking a massive 127 goals in 1969 and named at full forward in their team of the century

Bennell would be a minor payback but something is better than nothing (if he gets on the park that is).  Fingers crossed.

Given the year we’ve had and our history I imagine our offer would have to be far superior to Geelong’s. Given Bennell’s history it’s hard to imagine any team paying much.

Maybe he just doesn't want to live in Geelong. I know that I'd want an extra 50% on my wage to even think about it.

I had nerve issues in my left calf the last two years that the club physio up here said was a soleus tear. I was sceptical; I didn't feel it 'go'. Took ages 'to heal' in 2018 because it was a misdiagnosis...

This year - happened again - trusted my gut and did some nerve therapy and was back after a week.

I don't know anything about Bennell but it sounds like a 'good' calf issue...

This is what I don’t understand and in true demonland spirit I normally think I know everything.

Can someone explain why in previous calf injuries mri scans were showing a tear if it was just his calf pushing on nerves?

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
