Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Does make you wounder if Max rubs too many of the umpires up the wrong way.  Coincidentally it was against St Kilda last year that the umps awarded free after free against Max for trivial ruck infringements that were only explained post game.

I thought the same thing.  There seems to be as much unconscious bias by umpires in Brownlow voting as there is with supporter 'affirmation' based free kicks.

I wondered whether Oliver is in the same boat.  The umpires could not have missed all the undeserved talk of 'diving' and 'throwing' and he is a cheeky sort of a guy.

Rapt for all our players and the team.  For us to come second in team polling is another strong indicator of how far we have come over the last 4-5 years.

@Ethan Tremblayloved the instagram by Gus sending up the AFL.  Reckon he will get an invite next year!

He might start Hi-5's with all the umpires next year, not just Razor.  Huge achievement for him and a great way for his family to end the year.

The top three teams to win Brownlow medals are Sydney with 14 medals, Western Bulldogs (10) and St Kilda (10). They've won 5, 2 and 1 premierships respectively.

Except the Brownlow came from the premiership team just last year.

The Brownlow has always been an umpires votes and was fine when there was only 1 umpire.

Then we went to 2 umps and one year they both voted and the vote tally was huge so they decided that the umpires would concur and give one set of votes. The flaw in the system is now 3 umpires have to compromise and pick a consensus 3,2,1 and given they cannot often agree on a correct umpiring decision it is no surprise they get some wrong.

Now it is a midfielder award

Did I read correctly? Rance got 0 votes. Ha so why did he get an invite? The superstar got donuts

Umpires clearly don't like 'stagers'.  They started paying frees against him.  Teach the sod a lesson.

Let us celebrate Gus and Gawny's results.

Maybe the umpires are closer to the action and realise the "quality"of a players involvement a little better than from a TV Screen or from 200 metres away.

Let us recognise it is an Umpire Voted award. The Coaches have their award and Channell 7 have theirs etc.

The one that would rate the least credible is Ch 7 , because the organisation of last nights count  resembled a school concert, because they could not work out what the main event was. ( It was really Richo/Cooney  skit which was great.) Let us revert to making it a radio event and have reported driving around Melbourne to find the winner. ( and telecast that !!!)

Congratulations to Gus, Big Max, Clayton and the rest of the Team, the boy's played some great tough and exciting footy in 2018, let's hope that we can pick up a bit of quality support for Max and that Jesse and Jake can come back to their utter best in 2019 so that we don't drop those games that we should win and we can finish top 4 to have a really good crack in 2019 and beyond.

I love what this team brings to the game most weeks, however we need to find another 5% internally and bring in a few fresh faces again to maintain and refresh our enthusiasm and will to win.And Yes hemingway Nev Jetta is a Super star of the competition on and off the field and wasn't it great to see Jimma's daughter doing such a grand job on the night, he would have been proud indeed.

The umpires do a great job, particularly when you consider they have to leave their Labradors off the ground!

Apologies for the political incorrectness of my post, I’m a keen supporter of Guide dogs association and have a lab and a mungrel lab, should have called him Nicholls!!

Plenty of great players don't get Brownlow votes. For example, Neville Jetta has never received a Brownlow vote.

and ANB got 3 votes in one game.  what a world

A few observations:

  • Brayshaw polling more than Oliver suggests two things. He kicks the ball more than Oliver, so perhaps umpires value that form of disposal more than handpassing. As it generally equates to more metres gained, that's understandable, even though it's often the first handpass that sets that train in motion. Secondly, Oliver has a habit of arguing with umpires when he gives away a free kick or doesn't receive what he believes he's earned. I suspect umpires don't respond well to that implied criticism

Exactly what I was thinking. He continually argues and comes across as a gobby little whiney shiite. If I was an umpire I would be less than well disposed towards him and be more likely to give votes to someone else.

Congrats to Angus Brayshaw. Plays a style that looks good. Doesn't argue. Could be one of those players that polls well year after year, the way Adam Goodes did.

I think Gawn did about as well as a ruckman can do these days. Again, congrats. He had a good year and was a deserved AA and ruckman of the year.

Doubt it. Grundy imo was set to poll more because he won more of the ball. Ruckman just don't poll well. Gawn did superbly to get as much as he did.

Not totally sure if you are serious pal but trusting in the likes of Nicholls and Razor is a fools game, there is a reason why some of the greatest players ever think Lethal, Carey and Ablett Senior have zero brownlows between them. The whole Brownlow thing suits guys that run around on their own collecting cheap kicks even if the cant actually kick a footy think Harvey, Round and Martin.

Accountable players like Oliver, Viney and Harmes don't run around collecting the easy kicks so aren't likely to win one, Brayshaw might he ticks a few of the boxes, forget about Maxy, super season again but not collecting anywhere near enough cheap possession to win a Brownlow. Jesse Hogan was up there with the very best forward in the first half and don't see his name anywhere.

All in all do what I do, don't bother watching the Brownlow, when you put any focus on the opinions of Razor and his mates you have lost the plot.

To me, he (Oliver) looks like he sticks up for himself, well above Brownlow or no Brownlow, personal reward or more money, money, money.

You could tell the Bubba boys were there, Danger, Gazza and Mitch himself, and they all would sacrifice for a Flag........sure.

Oliver is the consummate Team player, just ask his handballs......

Umpires are close to the action and have the best view of who is working hard and succeeding. They have shown a clear preference in recent years for players who are highly visible and who run hard, collect the ball and deliver to advantage by kicking. Describes Angus perfectly.

Clarrie's inside work is too fast and too subtle for easy comprehension. For example, everyone has lauded Jake M for the goal against dorks but Clarrie's role in contesting the loose ball in the centre, winning the ball against 2 opponents and then delivering to a free Angus has been overlooked.

Without Clarrie, the opportunity might not have been there. Angus's run and kick and Jake's goal will win votes but not Clarrie's work to win the ball. With respect, others such as Salem and Hannan, could have successfully substituted for Angus and Jake 's. But who could substitute for Clarrie?

No one. He's unique and special. And too good to ever poll well in the Brownlow.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
