Yes, disappointing.

But there are bigger prizes than an artificial promo for the AFL's precious franchise clubs.

I am sure Charlie would prefer a premiership medallion than the rising star

It doesn't show it above, but Spargo had 7 tackles to go with those 14 touches and 2 goals.

He does his job with minimal fuss, but losing out to Taylor seems strange.  I could understand it if it was Giro or Guelfi, but not Taylor.

I remember when Demon supporters used to salivate over our players getting a Rising Star nomination. (Gysberts x 2, anyone?)   It was all we had to hang our hat on.  Thank god those days are gone.

Now we are just talking Brownlows and AAs. We’ve come a long way.

PS- still can’t believe Oliver didn’t win the rising star ??

The Rising Star is a BS award. You highlighted Clarry, but also look at the 2014 winner in Lewis Taylor (Patrick Cripps also came from that draft).

The Rising Star award gives zero credence as to which players' will develop into stars during their careers, but hey let's give them star status usually after only their first year of footy.

There is no need to ask who you would choose out of those 2 now.

They gave it to Hogan, the AFL can't have too many at one club.

People only remember the winner. And even then it’s not guaranteed. It’s a bit of a nonsense award. Rhys Palmer won it ffs. Over Cyril Rioli.

In fairness, Taylor played a very good game. The stats don’t do him much justice.

How long is it since we have had a blonde haired cheeky rover? Too long.

Spargo plays like an old style rover in that he is quick, runs hard, makes good decisions and knows how to kick a goal.

With natural improvement and the protection of the midfield that will allow him to prosper out of the heat in the middle he has great potential so long as we find a role for him.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
