Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Viney MUST be sole captain 2019

Jonesy has been a warrior but sadly he is not getting it done when it matters.  He was running up and down the ground with no impact.  He rarely kicks with skill and gets caught too often holding the pill.  Slow as treacle, sad but reality! I’m also convinced now he is not the right leader we need in big games.

Firstly, I just love what Jonesey has given to the club, through thick and thin, mainly thin.

But he is nearing the end, unless he puls off a remarkable turnaround in the next 2, (or hopefully 3,4,5,6) games

but

Jack Viney needs to concentrate completely on getting on the park, getting the ball and delivering it with elan to either a teammate, or preferably the goal umpire, so I don't really think he can be sole captain 2019.

A huge dilemma, of the club's own creation.

Max would be my choice as captain, but "dropping" Jack would be an about face that I doubt the club would be prepared to make.

On Jones:
A) He had some really poor moments today but he also never stopped running in the last quarter and kept getting the ball. He nailed a goal and had some other good possessions in with the bad. The worst players in a close game like today and the ones who didn't even want the ball or want the contest when it got close.

B) He's yet to start the next stage of his career as a flanker. Forward or back I think that's next. He's a good runner and whilst his decision making can go astray he is a good kick. Playing forward gets you more accustomed to making the kicks inside 50. Playing back gets you used to the exit kicks. He can do all of that. Don't write him off until he's had the chance to re invent himself.

On Viney:
A) Seriously questions have been asked about his role in the management of his foot/toe

B) He's now missed a fair chunk of footy this year and last.

All up I'd go with Jones and Viney for one more year. Jones will still be best 22 - I'm guessing on a forward flank. Viney will then have less pressured to get back for good this time and can take over in 2020 if things go to plan.

On Jones: I disagreed he is, or has ever been, a good kick. This got papered over when he was our only midfielder for 3 years, because everything he did was great in comparison plus he was at the top of his game. But now that he is losing a touch of pace it's getting exposed again as he has less time tti get rid of it.

I also think although he is hard at it and goes all day,  he is to slow to be a successful flanker in our current game plan.

If anything, I'd rather see him forward and rotate through the mid, because he isn't the worst set shot for goal and he isn't a good enough kick to replace Salem or Hbberd in the backline.

On Viney, I'm not convinced he is ready to lead by himself and I thunk he needs to get himself right before worrying about leadership. Hopefully someone else can step in and help.

Jones either takes Lewis' spot at half back or ANB's spot as the high half forward. Think he could do either next year. Or both even depending on form/injuries to others.

Jones nailed a crunch goal today and had a nice popped pass for a shot on goal. Feel free to disagree but I'd still back Jones over nearly any other player on the list to hit a target when the decision making is easy or done for him. He certainly lacks vision, most likely not helped by years of being the man in a bad side, but when the target is there he kicks with lovely penetration. I'd back him to make the easy kicks from half back or to adjust to half forward.

I don't see elevating Tom McDonald or Gawn as a successful idea, nor do I think Lever, Oliver or Gus are ready.

Jones should step down at the end of the season but I don’t think Viney should be stand alone captain. He doesn’t get on the park enough.

Who else should be co captain?

I'd consider throwing Brayshaw in there as well.

I would leave it as is for 2019. Then I would replace Jones with Brayshaw and have Viney and Brayshaw as co-captains from 2020 onwards.

My personal opinion looking at on/off field demeanour is to favour Lever in a leadership role. That's observation from afar though.

Personally I feel TMac is the outstanding leader. No nonsense ,can lift, speaks well. Let Viney get right without pressure. (Plus he may have to learn a new playing role to prolong/maintain his career.)

Nothing against Max, but : You do not make a fast bowler captain and Max is too busy coming a media star.

Oh definitely not captain, co captain, or vice. But I’d have him in the leadership group next year.

Agree with all of the above deanox. Jones would be scary slow in the modern game for any flank and especially for applying defensive pressure.

Lever/Viney is my 2019 choice for leadership team as co-captains. Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw, etc will always play that ' follow me'  approach anyway.

I have to agree with this trio as the new leaders. I see another post that thinks the same

Jones will be like Swallow at the Kangas who lost the captaincy and was gone within a year. The game catches up with some players really quickly. Viney must have serious doubt on his ability to even play let alone captain. Look back since he started and note he has always had foot problems, this is not something that is a new development. Goodwin made a captains call on appointing Viney without consulting Jones anyway but for the above reasons must consider the future

After listening to Tom and Max interviewed today on various media I have come to the conclusion that they are the new leaders. Either as co captains or Tom captain and Max his deputy. They are in the right age bracket, play in positions that allow leaders to direct and influence play and can impact a game.

Lever deserves consideration but my concern is given the recent spate of ACL recurrences I worry about his continuity. There is no doubting his leadership however. In a recent discussion with a field umpire friend I was told that he noticed that Lever was the on field general who directs the whole backline and was very vocal. He is being missed for his ability as well as organising and directing the backline.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
