For our current  and potential  supporters of the middle suburbs,  and outer suburbs all the way to Cranbourne or Mornington...  and for the Bairnsdale Dees...  to Bendigo, Ballarat,  and even down Geelong way.

 

The governments are trying to dissuade people from driving so much through inner suburban shopping centre's. 

Trains are the Now and the Future...

Especially Fast trains,  from the regions of our state.

 

 

We at Melbourne have to stop thinking  just  about the inner city members...  and look after the masses out there,  who would join the Demons, from all around our State.

 

WE must,   "stop the leafy  cul-de-sac  thinking"..........   and think more broadly,  and more Inclusively.

this is what keeps the players feet on the ground, "earthed".

When the team/players win,  they spread the  joy at the club and receive it back from the supporters. promoting energy for all.  When the players are on a losing trot,  the emotions they receive from fawning kiddies helps to lift them from wallowing in self pity.

 

All in all its a natural healthy interaction between players with plenty,  and supporters with little...  It helps to address any imbalances in players focus.  Maintaining a Communal feel.

Gives them something tangible to fight for (others less fortunate),   rather then a self-driven exercise.   If your getting beaten up on, sometimes its easier to backaway,  than to keep on fighting...  but when your fighting for someone else's welfare,  it becomes a whole different scene.  especially for kiddies and for the more vulnerable.

 

This is what the club has missed since the 60's.

... that communal feel of fighting for a higher reason.    $$$$ just don't cut it... without that emotional charge to get through the highs and the Lows... and to keep on going when others give up.

Club facilities for supporters are grossly overrated in the 21 century. 

What we need are the best conditions for our players/ FD and to attract potential players.

The rest is nice to have but far from a necessarity.

When I quit the MCC membership after 22 years waiting since nomination, I couldn't find a Demons supporter - they were all Richmond, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton folk. Neil Mitchel (radio announcer) was the only one that I could recognise. An interstate posting for several years encouraged me to let that Membership lapse and nothing that the Dees have done since has made me regret saving on that Membership fee ever since. Still, the Southern Stand is just as good in the right spot, but I miss the Bay 13 Grog Guzzle of yesteryear and the Ponsford, in the sun.

I think you need both. We are now into winter, it can be a cold and wet time,  I believe players benefit from knowing and seeing supporters and interested onlookers around the Club facilities such as Hawthorn have at Waverly Park.

I think your missing an important point,  'od'.

 

It's not just the players we need to develop...   and no doubt one of the main reasons we are always in catch-up mode,  within the AFL...  Is we don't have the resources financially...  and that is because we are stifled without a home-base/social-club facility. 

This is what will bring membership numbers for a prolonged period to the club,  maintaining those memberships during high & low times Via connectivity,  "touch"

 

And respectfully,  I don't expect our more homelier members who like to sup on their 50Yr old Whiskies,  to understand these other types of people...  but it's these other types of people, who like the social connections with clubs,  and with the team and players.   That closeness and club-man-ship, camaraderie.

 

These are the people we want to add onto our supporter base...  And this then brings back the hereditary family ties and traditions,  which we've lost those past 50Yrs.

Didn't PJ spend a considerable amount of money and time doing this? I thought his findings were Docklands, Casey or the sports precinct where we are? Have his findings been made public?

I know there is a large, open area of land opposite the Costco in docklands which would certainly fit a MCG size oval. This would've been something PJ looked into.

It's easy to talk in broad cliches and point the finger. It's harder to make constructive, nuanced suggestions.

Yes to all that Mr. Shadow. I was at the 2017 AGM and PJ said as you say. From memory he said that they ( MFC ) commissioned a $100k + study that showed nothing large enough was available close to the G. Docklands was mention as there being plenty of land big enough but at that time there was no plan under consideration by the government or the city council.

From longer distances, I would only go to socialize, with the station in very easy walk distance. Yes.  

I would not expect to have to catch 2... or 3 other forms of transport,  to get to the station, so I could get home after celebrating... that is correct   'dc'.

Not everyone is financially well off enough to feel comfortable, spending on Taxi's.  that seems such a waste of money.

 

Now for people with kids in tow, etc...  even more important that we take an opportunity if we can,  to have a building abutting a railway station...  especially on a Railway line that connects directly to Frankston,  the Cranbourne Demons locations, and the Bairnsdale region and surrounds...  let alone the Northern & Sth-Western areas around Melbourne Via Fast-Rail.

 

So Yes  'dc'... I think its very important when a club puts down long-term roots,  to have those services right next door... very important.

With Fishermans Bend opening up, perhaps the time is right to make a pitch to the govt about a community hub sports facility, with a big oval at the centrepiece, changing rooms for local sports clubs (many of whom are crying out for facilities let alone grounds to play on), etc etc etc .... oh, and it might just be a good base for the MFC too. Anyone know if it's in a marginal seat?

Whatever options are available, stop gap type ones cannot be considered.

If you want to see what a 50 year plan for facilities looks like, then have a look at Essendons at Tullamarine.  2 ovals one the size of the MCG, the other the size of Docklands.  An indoor facility the size of 4 basketball courts and an administration headquarters. 

This is the future of what is needed, and it is why Hawthorn is moving.  Waverly is not big enough for the future. 

SO to be serious about the future, a facility needs 10 + acres of space....as has been pointed out by others, that is not available within 10km of the city.

I hope that we can secure some sort of government assistance, but a serious amount as well.  To get to AAMI, I think we got $2M while RIchmond got $12M, the Dogs gifted land and facilities of $16M.  Now Carlton, Richmond, Geelong, St.Kilda are all getting huge handouts.  Why not us?

I am not pointing any fingers. All i am saying is that we must keep looking for suitable land. We must not stop until we do. I have no doubt PJ worked his ring off in this area, but it doesn’t stop with his stepping down. Pert has to do the same until we get a result and if it takes 10 years or more so be it. 

I just get irritated when i read posters here saying “oh we tried that, and it was too hard”

the club must persevere until we find a suitable home within eyesight of the MCG

i think the limited space is already allocated to high density building developers. they want to squeeze as much money as possible out of it

If we are to do that sort of facility,  'g_oto'...  then surely the Casey region is the answer.   Together with an inner-Melbourne ground at Gosch's Paddock...

Casey or Dandenong...  preferably around the  'Lunar Drive-in Theatre',  plot of land...   that will be serviced by an adjacent Cranbourne rail-line Station,  and also a RailWay Station on the opposite side of the ground, On the Gippsland Railway line...   Stations  either side of that plot of land.

 

IMO,  one day the AFL will build a Boutique Stadium there...  its serviced by arterial roads running right beside this land..  and the Rail lines connect people directly from the regions.

We certainly are, miles behind all other clubs.Quite literally the only Club without a home base.
