Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Disappointing day, not as bad as the Hawks game but let’s not use that as a benchmark.

Last week the Dogs beat us up for a quarter over the ball but weren’t good enough to sustain it for four quarters, Collingwood didn’t really either over the 120 minutes but did more than enough to show the areas where we are falling short, we have a group of players who stand outside the pack waiting around for somebody else to win the ball and get it out to them even if there’s no other red and blue in sight and it’s their turn to go, these useless leaches are letting the rest do the work for them while they stand around looking for easy kicks.

To the guys that put their bodies on the line today well done and thank you for trying to win in spite of the cockwatching leaches that spend their time hanging around for free and easy kicks.

I mentioned in a previous post after the Bulldogs game that even though we won...we looked tired.  I thought it was our toughest win because we had to grind it out & didn’t  look anywhere as “fluid”as previous weeks.  We started the game flat today as well & never really recovered.  Six wins in a row is an impressive effort especially given one was in Alice Springs & then the next at Etihad after a short break.  A few players kept us in the game today but an enormous amount  didn’t  have any impact at all.  I’m not calling  for wholesale changes but Pedersen who has been a great servant is done and Tyson def also deserves another go.  Also happy to try some of our young talls.  I am under no illusion that we are a work in progress with so much to learn & look forward to seeing what they bring against Port.

So what do you think about the fact we had an 8-9 day break for the Pies, shouldn’t we have freshened up?

We're not a premiership contender. We're not a top 4 contender. And if we play like this against any side who turns the pressure up, we're barely a top 8 contender.

Until we beat someone ranked higher than Adelaide on the ladder, the big question mark will deservedly remain. The pressure we faced today was off the charts compared to the pressure placed on us in the six wins and we looked more like the team in the first 5 rounds than the one in the next 6.

Gawn and Grundy was a great battle all day I thought, and there was no obvious winner. Thought the umpires gave Grundy too much leeway but Gawn fought back.

However, because Gawn didn't dominate, our mids didn't get the armchair ride they've been getting. Couple that with a stronger opposition midfield, and the smashing in the clearances becomes easier to understand. We need to work out how to adjust when sides get right on top in the middle because once we lose the quick movement out of the stoppages, we fall apart around the ground.

Joel Smith was OK today, but will need more time to settle in. We need to give him not just the Port game but the three after (St Kilda, Fremantle, WB) to see if he can settle.

I'll back us in to respond against Port without making too many changes. However, Pedersen can't play the role he was asked to play and should be dropped for Weideman. Don't bother trying that again.

We also have to make a call on Petracca soon. He's bottom 6 at the moment and IMO getting games based on potential/reputation, not on form.

Always  been intrigued  by Howe.

Couldn't get a kick at half back for us.

Just happens to  run into Bucks in  Bali of all places.

Gets to where he  wants to go &  now he's a champ. Of half back. Find it interesting to say the least.

That's rubbish he was good at half back due to Roos moving him there.

He left he was a free agent wasn't he nothing we could do.

I actually agree with 20% of your exclamation points here Picket. However it might appear on the surface, that's a significant statistical improvement in terms of your punctuation performance.

My my main concern is when teams consistently apply pressure for 4 quarters we can’t handle it.

We have lost to teams that have done this to us and we will go nowhere in the finals if we make it because of it.

Its something that urgently needs to be addressed otherwise we are in for another wasted season.

The bye has come at a really good time imo.

Agree, we crumble when the heat is applied, it’s our biggest issue. Good teams absorb it and turn it back on the opponent. The biggest issue around this is leadership, there is none. Jones never stands up when chips are down, walks around with hands on hips.

Disappointing day but not the end of the world (or the season). Collingwood were red hot and we were flat as shizen carters hats....I thought we played some ok footy in parts but just beaten by a better side on the day. I can't believe Dunn beat Hogan so comprehensively though he looked well past it in his last season with us...

In theory..yes.... I still felt they looked flat & Viney alluded to that in his presser. Similar traits to what they displayed in the Bullies game.

Woke up this morning and nothing has changed.  We're 8-4, in the eight and well placed to achieve what we all wanted from this year - finals.  I can't ask too much more than that at this stage.

We can now have a short break, recharge the batteries and come out firing next Friday night.  I'm backing them in to respond in the best possible way.

What I find hard to get my head around is getting smashed in the clearances for two weeks in a row, especially when we have the likes of Gawn , Oliver and Viney in there?

Even when Hogan went in there he did nothing .

I know Tyson isn’t very fashionable but he is a good clearance player.

We played bad.  Lacked effort and spread, fumbled, had the maggots against us, got bullied in contests and that Isuk Cox idiot kicked 5!  Even with all of the above, we kicked 91 points.  We lost the game in the middle, and leaking from our forward half way to easily.  We failed to switch, we kicked up the line to 2:1s (the Pies ran to make them 2:1s), and let them out too easily.  A dark day.  8/4 at the turn, which should set us up to get us into the 8.  We will have to do something pretty special to get top 4 based upon what we delivered yesterday.

Filed under Go and Get Gaff.

You have to, not even grudgingly, hand it to the CFC coaching/FD team. They pulled us apart. They can win a flag playing like that.

I turned the game off at half time. Was going to have a stroke.

All posters have done a t'riffic job of pointing out what went wrong.

Jones - total pus

How was CFC able to have a floating player in the backline nearly every single entry attempt?

Petracca straight back to Casey to see how much he wants to be a footballer as opposed to a young fella on lots of money and in the media, worried about basketball etc.

Weideman - play rest of year, Pedersen did some ok things early and I only watched half the game but WTF was going on with setup.

Liked J. Smith.

Lewis vomit. Hands on hips. tackle pressure.

Tim Smith might've been handy this week? I don't think he should have been dropped after one bad game (in which he was poleaxed)? But then I'm not a coach or analyst of a team.

More concerning:

  • repeat of R23 - how can this have happened? This really needs pulling apart from a preparation and psychology point of view. It's really, really worrying. All this BS in the media about "we've learnt our lesson" is bollocks, clearly.
  • we seem unable to match a good team (can't lose by a close margin (R1 excepted))
  • did Goodwin have a plan B? Or A? Why doesn't he make drastic changes sooner? I thought changes were warranted after 20 mins, especially in the centre.
  • all players should be banned from all media. No podcasts, no inside Melbourne, nothing. I want laser focus.
  • serious doubts over top 8 now

Having said all that - needed to lose eventually, just a shame it had to be against this team. But, since we had to lose, this should serve as a wake up call.

So, what to do. Since we should still make the finals, some fine tuning needed ASAP.

Disappointing clearly, but not the end of the world. I'm sure everyone would have taken an 8-4 record going into the bye round with a percentage of 130. Just frustrating that we couldn't capitalise on a good opportunity on a big stage to take second spot and set up some breathing space between us and the bottom half of the 8. Let's hope that the players burn for the next 2 weeks and come out firing against Port. I really believe we can knock them off.

The game itself - clearly smashed in the middle. I thought our mids would have competed a lot better with Gawn winning the ruck dual, but their run and spread completely dismantled us. Umpiring was shocking at times, some of the worst I've seen for a while, and I thought it killed our momentum during some crucial periods of the game, however it wasn't a factor in the end. Clearly second best all game.

Tommy Mac can hold his head up high - a great game from him and shows how important he is for us up forward, so we really need to get the Lever replacement down back spot on. Thought Smith competed well and did OK for his first attempt - did some good things, maybe a bit nervous at times, but he should get another crack against Port.

We know what we are capable of and we've played an amazing month or so of footy so I see no reason why we can't back up the second half of the season just as strongly.

Good point about the lack of switch, I noticed many times yesterday day we had 2 players on for the switch and didn’t take and just kicked up the line. This was also evident in the Richmond game, so I’d say it’s a confidence issue from Collingwood (and Richmond’s) pressure. We are a much better side when we switch and take the game on. However coaches should’ve picked up on it early

I don't think we should have played 3 tall forwards with Pedersen, 2 talls 4 small forwards worked well for us the past 6 weeks.

As a utility, could Pedersen be reinvented as a defender? He can take a strong mark and has the size to outwork opposition defenders, so why not make the opposite switch of TMac?

Melksham didn't look his best - injury from last week niggling him?

Lewis had no run and didn't lay a single tackle.

Oscars game today reminded me of the Oscar of previous years.

As we all know we got smashed in the middle. Whenever Gawn tapped the ball down, we'd pick it up only to be tackled, or to handball it out to a waiting Collingwood player. We needed to spread more and Gawn needed to thump the ball out of the middle more as I've seen him do before - the straight down the throat tap worked to Collingwoods advantage almost every time.

Thing that killed us most was speed. We'd get the ball, shank a kick, and it would be inside 50 before you could blink.

I think OMac, Lewis, Melksham dropped, with Peders for Oscar, Hunt for Lewis and Garlett for Melksham. Room should be made for Tyson to come back into the side, maybe Petracca?

If a Pedersen move to defence won't work maybe blooding Petty instead.

Assuming a fit Hulk / T-Mac combo i also agree re 2 talls & 4 smalls.  We are too easy to run the ball away from our 50 with 3 lumbering talls.  The Pies exposed us big time here and went coast to coast far too often under little or no pressure.

One of Garlett/Bugg has to come in for Hannan and possibly for Spargo also. Thought Spargo's first half was ok which might save him and break might freshen him up.

Tyson for Tracc who is offering us very little on the inside / outside or defensively right now.  Tyson can hit up a few targets occasionaly and gets involved in the link up scoring chains a bit more even if a tad slow to react/dispose and run.  At this stage the lessor of two evils and can kick the odd goal.

Pederson's only option IF he gets another game is CHB IMHO.  We lack a tall marking general down back without Lever now and i would give him one more chance to try and show something in this specific role.  Otherwise i just dont see how he fits or works in this line up.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
